OMG my mother would've wrung my neck for doing something like what those kids did, not only does it distress the animals but it's just downright WRONG behaviour in someone else's home.

They weren't behaving well with Dr. Chris in the opening either. I can't imagine I'd ever have been allowed to tap and pester at an adult who was busy (outside of an emergency) without my parents stopping me immediately by pulling me away or by whispering to stop it and wait. The mom just ignores that her daughter's pestering while they're trying to film a scene.

Why did they put a ring in her nose? So nasty. She looks like a Pu'aa, a Polynesian feral pig. Surprised there aren't Kunekunes available, they have such sweet personalities and are fairly determinate in size. Again, not a micro pig or a teacup pig, but about the weight of a big dog and more compact. They perhaps should have waited until the kids are older before introducing such a high-maintensnce critter into their lives.

Also sometimes having a child just experience that their unwanted behavior is ignored and not beings them the wanted attention can the exact right thing to teach the child.

That was completely my thought as well. Once they see one full sized and how it will cause a lot of issue with space within their home - because I am sure it will want to come inside - they would, hopefully, woken up from this mini pig fantasy.

If it was me, having been in a situation myself where I found myself caring for two rescue Vietnamese pot bellied pigs, I would take the trouble to get to know a local pig farmer. These guys have usually farmed pigs for several generations, and will be able to provide so much information. This was by far the best I could have done for my pigs. I didn’t know they could get sunburn, that pigs get mumps just like humans do. Pigs are highly prone to lead and chemical poisoning from specialist outdoor paints and wood preservatives. There are many foods, fruits and vegetables that are harmful to their digestion. The list goes on. People think putting a ring through their nose is cruel, but if you don’t want your pet pig digging and rooting vast trenches across your garden you need to have a ring put through their snout. They don’t feel any pain from it and it’s perfectly safe. You can have an adult pig indoors, you just have to be mindful that pigs get destructive if they’re bored and left unattended. Mine used to love nothing more than trying to raid the dog biscuits, and roll up in the hearth rug in front of the coal fire. A real life size pig in blanket if you think about it!! Pigs are really easy to toilet train, but fair warning finding yourself stuck in a room when a pig farts is something else. You could bring down an entire army with the whiff of just one fart.🤷‍♀️

@@Jjudes9665 I also found myself having to care for a rescued Vietnamese potbelly piglet. Full grown at 90 pounds! I have to disagree with something you said though. Punching a nose ring into a pig's snout is quite painful and causes intense pain each time the pig begins to root. That is it's purpose entirely. Instead of doing this to my "Hamlette", I selected areas where she was allowed her natural rooting behavior. In the house the carpet and walls wouldn't stand a chance so her room had indoor/outdoor carpeting on the floor and up the walls as far as she could reach. Another among many adaptations required for such an animal living in an unnatural environment. I never found it hard to potty train her and she never relieved herself in the house. As a baby she adapted quickly to a litter box and later I always took her out along with the dog.

Closest you get to a "Mini Pig" is a Vietnamese Potbelly, and even THEY will go 300 pounds or more!

You can def get mini pigs, its just alot of people dont realiese how big a pig actually is so a mini pig will be the size of a St Bernard dog! Plus they need lots of outdoors space to forage and explore....not something the average suburban house has.

There's no such thing as a micro/pockrt/nano pig, but there ARE mini pigs - defined as "any swine under 300 lbs." And you are correct - those folks touting "our pigs full grown weigh less than xx lbs" most likely advocate for a starvation diet which stunts growth, but also greatly shortens the life of the pig and causes many other issues. I like to remind people - if Paris Hilton can't get a micro pig, what makes you think YOU can?? PS - we have 2 mini pigs, Mushu & Kalua. They'll be 6 years old in September, about 3 feet long, 22" tall, and weigh about 200 lbs eqch.

Stunt their growth is cruel and unhealthy! Kids will probably feed him any old thing they feel like anyway, and mom's not a disciplinarian, poor piggy!

Having had rescue pigs of my own around my young family I know things don’t always go to plan, but on the whole bringing a young piglet into the home environment gives ample time for both parties to ‘settle’ into each other so to speak. Pigs are exceptionally intelligent and playful, so they do tend to enjoy the company of children. I know my pigs did. Pigs are highly social creatures and thrive on being the centre of attention. My pigs, even once they were fully grown (huge😳) they were still very gentle around anyone especially children. My neighbours kids loved nothing more than constructing mini pig assault courses and race tracks for my piggies. Pigs don’t tend to resort to endangering/harmful behaviour unless they are consistently abused and neglected. They are mostly docile, very friendly, are constantly inquisitive, and naturally maternal. But they will eat you out of house and home if you’re not careful.

@@Jjudes9665 you know first hand and by experience, I love pigs and you are right they are extremely smart and sweet nature, and they make wonderful companions. But as for any pet, bird reptile, dogs and cats of certain breeds.... they each have their specific characteristics and needs. I have rescued a couple of Persian cats and exotic shorthair. Many people are attracted to the beauty and the cute smoosh face, but then they don't realize the needs they require, the grooming and cleaning, the food. As you know many have gotten a pig because it became a trend, which is terrible. I really hope this lady doesn't get tired of the poor animal when he gets bigger and her girls don't see him as the cute little spotted piglet that he was, when they first got him. @@coolcat817 Thank you for your kind words. I’ve lost count of the animals that I’ve been lucky enough to have been part of my family over the years. I haven’t had my smallholding for well over 20 years now, as the lease ran out and my landlord needed me to move. I did manage to successfully and happily re-home any of the animals I couldn’t take with me. I currently now only have two cats, one of which is a rescue. We acquired him at only 4 weeks of age. Alfie came to us from a young couple who were having great difficulty caring for him. On purchasing him they had been told that he was the last kitten remaining from the litter and he was only small because of a congenital birth defect in his lower jaw and being the runt of the litter. It turned out he was not 8 weeks old as stated but only 3 weeks old when they bought him. I took him on a week later with severe projectile diarrhoea caused by being weaned way too early at around two half weeks. My vet of 30 years was angry and dumbfounded by the whole situation. Alfie bless him took a lot of patience and perseverance to get him properly weaned and toilet trained among many things. Taking any animal from their mother before they are ready has a devastating effect on both mother and it’s young. Alfie went on to have severe bladder and urinary issues which were most certainly caused by being weaned 5 weeks too early. He’s now on medication and a special diet for the rest of his life. I had a similar issue with one of my pigs because the litter was removed from their mother too early. This and a persons complete lack of knowledge about proper animal welfare when they purchase a pet REALLY infuriates me. There’s nothing I don’t know about cats, they’ve been in my life for over 50 years. But I have to admit I knew zilch about pigs when I first found myself looking after one. My first port of call was a local animal feed supplier. Not only to get proper pig food in pellet form, but to pick his brain on who he knew that kept pigs locally that I could learn from. That was by far my best move. A local (4th generation family) pig farmer was a godsend with a whole plethora of information about pig keeping. He also put me onto books I could get through the the library, another minefield of very useful info about pigs. I actually think this lady that wanted the pig for her family will be fine. She’s obviously already successfully keeping healthy and happy chickens. Chickens like most poultry are not easy to keep, as there’s so much that can go wrong very quickly. They are prone to so many infections and diseases. I think she’s done her basic research about pigs, I just kinda hope she doesn’t think that’s all she needs to know. Keeping any pet is a continual learning curve from the day they’re born right on up to the day they die. I don’t think anyone should just go out and purchase any kind of animal without first finding out what exactly caring for this little creature entails. Honestly, I've seen pet pigs before and they never struck me as problematic from the outside, but I do get Dr Chris' perspective. It is one thing to be a childless couple with no other pets but a big pig you walk every day, as I've seen. Quite another to be a single mom with two rowdy, not particularly well-behaved kids and already a menagerie at home. Any pet is a commitment, that woman is the only adult in the household, and she has enough commitments already.

@TimTim the BunBun! It's best for the animal... uh, okay. Not all children are disrespectful towards animals like your niece and nephews are. I never mistreated my cats, and the one time I did and got scratched, I learned not to do that anymore. But I never lost interest. I had a childhood friend who's family adopted a dog, then promptly lost interest in it. The dog sat in a cage in the backyard for the rest of its life, completely neglected. And guess what? The kids will lose interest in that pig, and the pig will continue to grow. The mother seems to think this pig is like a dog, but it's going to get much bigger, louder, and more destructive than a dog. And the pig will either end up neglected, or sold to a slaughterhouse. These people are irresponsible as all hell. There's no such thing as a mini-pig, ridiculous.

It is normal for kids to treat everything like a doll, or rather they treat their dolls and stuffed animals like they would treat smaller kids and animals. That doesn't mean they are not interested and will not develope a relationship, it means that they have yet to train their skills in tending to smaller beings and reckognize their needs. Children are literally unable to even consider the needs of others long term befor they reach age two or three, their brains develope as they grow. Why they need supervision and training. These girls acted like very excited lively young girls of their age. They were not respectless, they just did not know how to treat a pig.

True my pig loves taking a shower she goes there and lay down while water falls on her back hahaha she also ha a pool and if she doesn't she will try to lay over the water pot. 😄

I was a pig farmer for a few years. Pigs love mud a they eat their own feces and will eat their own young sometimes.

@@mugiirakimathi6299 They exhibit those behaviors in the wild too. They love the mud because it acts as natural fly and sun protection. They eat their feces possibly to cover their own scent from predators and to replenish their gut biome.

Pigs are food my family raises them yearly and they go to the butchers just before Christmas. If it's any consolation they were given the best scraps and a warm barn when it was cold.

Obviously the duty to do research is still on them, but if a breeder tells you it's only going to get 10 pounds, why would you think to ask if they're lying? Only getting to 10 pounds, not being destructive, being as simple as a dog, etc are all wild lies I've heard people were told when they sadly had to rehome their pet pig due to size or care issues.

..yes, I thought that too! Surely showing them the mum would have given them an idea, which is probably why the farm didn't show her. The mum would have been a bit twitchy if she had been in there too, but they could have gone to see how large, and strong a full grown pig gets! The house will not be big enough, and I can imagine that the girls will be boisterous and end up being bitten in defence.

A mini pig Is literally a pig that should usually stay small, it was called that because calling it a “pigmy pig” doesn’t quite “fit”.

The way he described it though how mini pigs don't stay mini when fed... Of course they won't grow to their full potential if you starve them?! But that doesn't make it a mini pig? Just a underfed normal pig O.o

Also the ''mini rabbits''. When my sister was a very young girl (she is now adult), one aunt gave her a ''miniature rabbit'' and everything was cute until he turned into a big, big rabbit unable to fit in his enclosure at all. A seller sold them the standard, big farm rabbit 🤣 Dunno what happened to the creature after the parents sold him to a guy that keeps rabbits on a pasture.

I don't think that's true at all. As a kid I lived on a farm with meat pigs and they never once showed aggression aside from when they would huff when messing with their babies. The pigs that generally attack people are usually neglected and /or starving. My dad worked at a chicken ranch and constantly hurt himself yet still took care of the pigs daily without ever getting bitten. This pet pig isn't even going to get fed meat so it'll have no taste for it. Our meat pigs though generally had no problem killing a chicken that got a little too close to them though my dad regularly fed them chickens from his work. He never fed them live chickens and would break the chickens neck before throwing it into the pen but they got the taste for chicken and loved it. Me and my siblings ranged from the ages of newborn up to 13 when we first lived on the farm and we all interacted with the pigs daily and never once got bit.

Definitely not true. Maybe if they're regularly fed raw meat, because then they'd associate the smell of blood with their food time, but even then pigs are very smart and not likely to intentionally munch on a still living person. I would be concerned about the girls getting their fingers into Petal's mouth when she's bigger though. Pigs will not shy from biting if annoyed, or if they think you're holding food and oops, that's your hand. And a pig bite can easily snap digits and tiny hands off before the pig realizes it wasn't food (and now it is food, because it will swallow and you won't be able to reattach...). They don't have soft mouth breeding like modern dogs do (the thing that makes dogs release before they bite when they realize that's your hand and not food or a toy they thought they were going for).

My late Dad was an illustrator. I often kicked myself for not doing this with him before he lost his eyesight to Macular Degeneration. I had a smallholding, and a menagerie of cats, a dog, rabbits, hamsters, rats, geese, ducks, a fish pond, two pot-bellied pigs, and a large aviary of finches, cockatiels and budgies. Many of which came to us via rescue. But alas there’s always a whole host of ‘what if’s’ after you lose a parent. I just hope Dr. Chris realises how great he is with kids and that he really shouldn’t put that side of his life on the back burner for too long.

Pigs naturally want to root in the dirt. This is very destructive so people put those rings in their nose to stop them. When they go to root in the dirt, the ring causes pain so they stop. I personally think it's very cruel to deter their natural behavior just because you want to keep them where they don't belong and to do so by causing them pain. It'd be like someone binding your child's feet because you're tired of them running around all the time and want to force them to walk slower or be in pain.

Exactly. I hate it when they do that. Especially on a pet pig. If they don't want a pig to dig in their lawn they shouldn't get one in the first place. It's what they do!
