NEVER open a sewer cover. You have no idea if it goes to a stormwater system or a sanitary system. This happened in our village, someone thought they were being helpful and did this, but tons of rainwater went into the sanitary system and flooded people's basements.

It's like a small dam whereas if you open the flood gate completely, there is a higher net gain than net loss of water. Just think if everyone did this when their roads that have this same design (water collection via sloping and pooling ditches in the road.) I saw what was mainly coming up out of those drains was yard clippings and debris
@M22OHIO4 роки тому
@@douglasmorrison9098 Yes I agree it's on the people to sweep the road in front of there house, in fact I was doing my street today I agree with you 100%. On the other hand though, I don't think once a month which is all I was getting at okay maybe once every other month, is to much to ask to get some of the finer dirt's and road debris beyond what regular people could do, hell your normal shopping mall probably gets it's parking lot cleaned every day every other day. My city owns a street sweeper it's sitting down at the city garage it's an Elgin Pelican and it's not some old model from 1982 either it's fairly new, they own it they bought it and paid for it, it's a city asset, obviously it's in the budget to use it, hell I pay $6,000 a year in property taxes and also sales tax and income tax, so I don't think twice a quarter to have the streets swept with the machine is to much to ask especially since the city already owns the machine and there going to raise my taxes anyhow that's just inevitable weather we like it or not any money they "saved" isn't going to come back to me anyhow it'll just be squandered somewhere else. But I'm sorry isn't having a normal street sweeping program just part of running a city isn't that what the city service department is for? Especially where I live the city negotiated a lousy garbage hauling contract for what we pay and for what we get the city should just go back to doing it them selves like they used to do for the prior 50-60 years, but that's another topic anyhow they stop brown bag collection way to early and we have a lot of leaves and the city encourages people to just throw piles of leaves on the tree lawn and eventually the city vac truck will get to it. Personally I think that's stupid, I always throw my leaves out I don't pile anything up, but other neighbors do, and all it does is clog storm sewers and make a mess so I think if the city is going to collect the leaves with the vac truck and take forever getting to it, because of the rain or what ever the reason is, then at the very least if nothing more, come by once in the fall and once in the spring I don't think twice a year or maybe once after a major weather event is going to break the budget. But I do agree with you over all you are correct I saw the same thing you did.

Just some good people fixing where they live. I love it.

Post 10 could do all of this by himself and in 6 minutes

You should probably get an inspector to check that street, if it’s seeping through the concrete, then you are at risk for sink holes.

That was the first thing I thought

That is a sewer. Storm drains are usually on the side by the curbs?
@wastedintelligence90404 роки тому
Not always the case and they all drain to the sewer. Sometimes there are runoff points that direct rainwater to a larger body of water. Or if you live in an older area they install manhole covers with drain ports.
@eleanorrose55774 роки тому
Depends what country you live in as well
@williamuskoski13854 роки тому
@@wastedintelligence9040 sewers are closed. You cant acess em. Storm drains are the ones with holes in the top

This place appears to have a combined sanitary/storm sewer system based on the manhole lid at 7:18 -- when it's a combined system, who cares about the lifting hole in the side allowing a bunch of storm water into the sewer. You won't see that where there are separate sanitary and storm sewers--with those, every effort is made to keep storm water out of the sanitary sewer because it increases the operating costs for the sewage treatment plant, and, in a big storm, could overload it. Combined systems were obsolete by the 1940s, but they remain in areas developed prior to then.
@brianleeper57374 роки тому
West Chester Illinois in Cook County---DEFINITELY a combined sewer system. I used to live in Elmhurst, Illinois, also a combined system, and I recall seeing a manhole lid exactly like that one except it had water coming OUT of it--this was after a major storm which flooded much of the city. I sure wouldn't be walking barefoot in any flooded street in any city with a combined sewer system!!!
@pamelapenick6871Рік тому
Where I live we have huge open canals to help with the overflow and sounds like a raging river when it is in full force. It drains into the Rio Grande river. In the desert things flood really easy as the ground can't absorb the rain like it does where this appears to be. I can only dream of the green grass you guys have.

I remember in my neighborhood we opened all the drains and we cleared 10ft of water in like 10 mins
@nickbeam54324 роки тому
Those look more like man hole covers your drain will be on the curb of the street with a steel grate and a 3" by 4 foot long opening at the curb of the street around the lowest part of the street on both sides of the street.

Convenient how everyone waited until the flooding was complete before clearing the stormwater drains.

To think they probably pay taxes to have the city do that, and those tax dollars get swallowed up into god knows what. So here they are having to do it themselves. Ah the efficiency of government...
@donaldboyer81822 місяці тому
Since they are talking about a massive flood which occurred years ago they should have gotten out there much sooner. You learn from history.

Post 10 is the man for this. Where the drains flow out into a main drain pipe that may be overwhelmed where it drains into.
