Dr. Phil talks with guests who have different opinions about tipping or giving gratuity for various services, such as a haircut, a manicure, or dinner at a restaurant. Walter admits he never tips and is completely against the entire tipping system. Jackson and Theresa, who have been working as servers, both say they believe in tipping others for a job well done. In fact, Jackson says he can even spot a bad tipper! Dr. Phil puts him to the test just to see how accurate his skills are. Then, meet Naam and Bryce who both say that modern tipping in this country has become way too aggressive. And, Etiquette Expert and Founder and CEO of Beverly Hills Manners Lisa Gashé gives Dr. Phil and his guests her views on tipping. (21057)

What thing did he leave out? Was it demographics? If so, I will go out on a limb to say I am part of a demographic that has a reputation for not tipping well. That said, I usually tip generously. I tipped one girl 50%. She snatched money out of my hand and was extremely ungrateful and entitled. I went back to that same restaurant and she was my waitress. When I got the bill, I put “zero dollars”on the Tip line and wrote why.

I absolutely disagree with that unfortunate stereotype your suggesting. Where I work at, the group of people you're referring to are great tippers. In fact, 2 of my best customers are of that demographic and you know what, I wouldn't even care if they gave me a bad tip (which they never have but for arguments sake), because they're two of the nicest and polite guys I've ever had the pleasure of serving.

Using the excuse that America is the richest country in the world doesn't mean that they treat the people that live within it fairly. In fact I'm almost 100% certain at this point that our government which is white, racist, incredibly wealthy, doesn't give a damn about the poor, and mostly christian, pretty much wants us dead. We can't afford to pay for medications that keep the elderly alive, and don't even get me started on the conditions that we have left our elderly in and the disgusting hospice and nurse care that they have. We can't afford to give a homeless person any sort of work and yet we want to berate them because they have to live on the street and use that same street as a public bathroom, teachers here don't get paid fairly and if anything happens to Little Johnny and he fails the class it's automatically the teachers fault. You should do a little more research before you decide to think that you know about a country that absolutely is one of the worst to live in aside from the religious freedoms, which they aren't even freedoms anymore because if you aren't one of the main ones that they decide you have to be, be prepared to be taken down for it. Oh and if you're gay? Good luck even living, also a female, because if you get raped you're having that child. You don't understand what it is like to live in this God forsaken country anymore.

I completely disagree with the system. Changed since cell Phones, because I’ve had a phone since the mid 90s and I remember people saying to me, “I’ll serve you,” or “I’ll help you, when you stop talking on your phone,” back when phones were the size of a small suitcases. I’m old enough to know the first cell phone salesman who sold the first pocket sized cell phone - meaning it fits in a shirt pocket - in the San Francisco Bay area, and who his customer was. Long before cell phones, there were pagers, answering services, answering machines and all that. Nowadays, people don’t necessarily get dressed up to go eat, and our phones are with us almost all the time, and we conduct all manner of personal and professional business using our cell phones, in other words we are carrying our pager, our answering service, our answering machine, our office, and many of the tools that used to be in the office. Personally, I’m not at a restaurant to make friends. I find greeters who come up and try to engage me - in the exact way he’s talking about being engaged - as very irritating and I’m not into it. I don’t want some guy to come up and smile and say “hey guys, how’s it going,” and expect I’m going to be there for any other reason than ordering food, or getting in there and getting out with whatever it is that I need. What he is doing, is 100% the exact same as a police officer who pulls up, and asks the same sort of scripted questions, and I’m not into that either. When the car pulls me over, I keep my hands on the steering wheel because I don’t wanna get shot, and I know at some point he’s going to tell me why he pulled me over, and he’s either going to lecture me, or give me a ticket, or both, and I’m simply interested in getting on my way as fast as possible because I probably was doing something wrong and that’s why I probably got pulled over. In other words, it’s a business transaction, with pretty much scripted formulas, and I know that that server doesn’t really Care about me or my day or how things are going for me. It’s just some script that he’s got in his mind and he’s in his formula. More power to him. Whatever works man. I mean I’m not joking when I say I remember having a cell phone that weighed 3.2 pounds, before anybody had cell phones, and paying $.90 a minute for the incoming side of the call and $.90 a minute for the outgoing part of the call, but it was a tool that made me money, and plenty of it. My point is, sometimes I was paying $1.80 a minute, and this is back in the mid 90s, and the last thing I wanted to do was have some server come up and interrupt me, and ask me how my day was going, when I knew that I was losing literally something like three cents per second for every second I spoke to someone else besides the customer or client or distributor or whoever it was that I was communicating with on the cell phone. Be honest, I’m not interested in dropping three cents per second for somebody who I don’t know, may never see again, on a “how is your day going” script. I tried to be efficient with people and tell them exactly what I wanted, exactly how I wanted it, and if I had questions I would ask them. I wasn’t interested in the daily special. I wasn’t interested in talking about the weather. If you thought you were going to get a better tip by getting a smile out of me, or engaging me in Smalltalk, it was actually the exact opposite. And, as a San Francisco Bay Area resident I’ve eaten in a wide variety of restaurants- I’m there for the food not the mood. This guy has a system that will work for some people, but we’re in a different society than we were 10, 20, and certainly 30 years ago. That system might work if you’re going into the restaurant and expecting the server to be polite, and kind, and smile, and say things like, “hey guys how’s it going today?” As if he actually cares. He doesn’t care. Or she doesn’t care. Or they doesn’t care whatever your personal pronoun is. For example, many cultures are very efficient, and will act as though they are in a rush when they come to your table, and it doesn’t really matter to me, because I’m not there for the mood I’m there for the food. And I don’t think I’m alone. Well, I am alone right now, talking on my phone, if you don’t include my dog sitting next to me. What I don’t want, when I had children at the table, was some horrible attitude server who thought that we weren’t going to tip because we’re parents of young children, so they spent all the time over at the other table with the people who had the alcohol and basically ignored us. What I don’t want, is some server who thinks they have a system. That guy. Hate to say it, but he’d get a terrible tip from me because he’s treating me like I am a commodity, and that is a fact. He’s got everybody pegged. Plus, I’m sure many of those servers can’t wait to get away from the table so they can check their phones, and their social media, just like many of the customers are doing at the tables. That said, I have never been a server. And I don’t want to be a server. So, it’s just my opinion from the receiving end. I’m going to add this last part, because I used to do anger management and domestic violence groups for men. Many of these men were violent. Many of them were entitled. Many of them had very poor social skills. And 99.9% of them were mandated to attend the groups by the courts, probation, parole, or their attorney who was trying to keep them out of jail or prison. Some of them were sent there by their works, and the groups used to be 12 weeks, then after the OJ Simpson Trial, they all went to 16 weeks, and then 32 weeks, and then 52 weeks. I used to have an assignment that I would give to these guys. We talked about tipping and good / bad service. So I have heard thousands of stories about how people tip or don’t tip. I used to assign these guys as homework that no matter how bad the service was that they got, they had to leave at least one dollar. Most guys refused. Whatever. I’ve heard all the stories about the upside down water glass, the penny as a tip, and acts of incredible rage that you now see on UKposts from some of these guys. In any case, I would assign them to leave a dollar, because it’s called an “opposite action.” When you feel as though you’ve gotten really bad service, and your tempted to not leave a tip, leave at least one dollar, or two dollars, because it’s the opposite of what you want to do. A similar strategy is, when somebody cuts you off in traffic instead of tailgating them or flipping them off, slow down and pray for them and take some deep breath‘s as you’re driving. The opposite of what you normally do. These are 1970s tape interventions in a field that deals with assertiveness training, versus aggressive or passive. Many times, just like this server, they are expecting a bad tip, and I’m surprised Dr. Phil doesn’t say as much, but he is projecting onto the customers his own attitude, and he is even saying that if he gives excellent service to people who he believes are going to tip him well, for some magical reason they tip him well. Conversely, if he believes they’re not going to tip him well, he may not be saying it, but he’s clearly giving them less than excellent service and surprise surprise, magically they’re not tipping him well. In other words he’s creating his own reality. Another word for it, is magical thinking, a stage of development associated with infancy, where the infant lying in the crib believes that they are crying causes some thing to happen in the real world, because when they cry people come, and do something for them, so the child learns to cry, as a means of controlling their universe. This is long before the development of language, and maybe the six months to 12 months stage of life. That servers engaging in magical thinking. So I would recommend to undo scripted action- get bad service / give no tip or retaliate - by giving a two dollar tip to somebody who gave me bad service because they’re not expecting a tip. I’m not giving the tip for them, I’m giving the tip for me. And I taught guys to do this and we would talk about how they felt giving a tip to somebody that they didn’t want to give a tip to or they thought they had been disrespected by or given bad service by. Some of these guys were very violent as I said, many of them possibly not so bright, and a few of them had murdered and definitely attempted to murder people. I really enjoyed these groups because you really got to see what people thought, or at least what they thought they could get away with saying to me because I was usually an agent of parole or probation or the courts and had to do progress reports and all that stuff. That’s called the practice effect. You get better at it the more you practice it. In other words treating people a little bit better than you would normally treat them. I have given large tips to some of the worst servers imaginable. They literally got everything wrong at my table, everything wrong at every table nearby, and clearly were not capable of doing the job well. Who knows? Maybe they had some really horrible life circumstance. I would give a five dollar bill to some homeless person if I felt it might really be a good thing for me to do for whatever reason I chose to do it. But 99.9% of homeless people I don’t even bother to look at much less give money to. And the same is true for you. I’m going to die. I’m not taking it with

@Heyyyitsjadee
@Heyyyitsjadee Рік тому
But the servers is responsible for making sure the one cooking your food does it to your needs/wants.. You know that cheese you want to add, and tomatoes you want to remove. The chef doesn't just know how you want it and if it wasn't for those servers, your order would never get put in meaning you don't eat.. hmm.. They bring your food, and let's face it, if the CHEF doesn't make the food right you're not walking back to the kitchen, you're yelling at the one in front of you. The server makes a majority of your experience and is literally the only reason the food you're eating is in front of you. Regardless, that "prepared dish" you're tipping on 99% of the time came out of a freezer and popped into the oven/microwave. So if the tip should just go to the chef, you're tipping someone for pressing a button and walking away? Like I always say, if you don't tip or can't afford to, you have no business dining out. Servers are providing a service. If you didn't want the service, you should've stayed home and made your own food. Plus tips don't go directly to one person. They're split between servers, bussers, hostess, chef, bar tenders etc. All of which make that one experience of eating out happen. Not just the chef.

I don't have a job where I get tips, but there are still performance expectations. If I fail to meet those, I'm at risk of losing my job. I added one side of ranch to an appetizer(just one condiment added) and when it came out from a food runner, the waitress admitted stupidly "I DIDN'T PUT IT ON THE TICKET, because THE FOOD RUNNERS DON'T READ THE TICKETS." I couldn't believe she was TOO LAZY to put into the computer ONE condiment. They don't want the money. I mean seriously, they don't want to even do the BARE MINIMUM at times. I'm glad not every server is like that. My husband and I have had some others that try to do that like I have had several servers say "Oh it's crispy" when ordering my bacon crispy simply because it's too much work for them to put into the computer the word "CRISPY." I think we need to know the history behind tipped professions. Why do we tip hotel staff, wait staff, and anyone who provides a service? I am not clear on how paying a server $3.25 an hour is legal bc they work in an industry that receives tips. Why not pay them a regular wage and tips are a perk of the job! Just like free coffee is a perk when you work @ Starbucks. For those that don't tip I question their moral compass. My aunt always told me, "Do not sit down in a restaurant if you cannot tip." Even if the service is bad she told me to leave a tip. Not a big one, but I should also alert the manager about my experience. A restaurant manager told me to write a note on the receipt if the service was bad bc the managers see every single receipt. I tip 20% ALWAYS! Even if my meal is free, a refire, gift card, birthday, or special. I made the mistake a long time ago of tipping room service 20% until I looked @ a receipt and saw they already get gratuity included. International travelers in the U.S. do not tip, but they understand how our system works, so there really is no excuse for not leaving a tip. When in Rome!

I am a long time server, this video wasn't very informative at all. I think that I am much more able to tell if a table will be high or low maintenance. And yes, if you are high maintenance there is much more variance in the tip because the needier you are the more likely you will think that I am giving good or bad service. Needy customers are creating more opportunities for the server to "fail" or "impress" you. A) Women are much higher maintenance than men, it is not even close. No, it is not sexist to say this. If you disagree, you are ignorant at best and sexist at worst. If you happen to have an uncle who is super demanding, whatever, women are on average significantly more demanding than men. B) The way random people were paraded out here is not a good indicator of their tippiness. This could have been done much better, such as Dr. Phil films a restaurant and the guy makes his determination about their tippiness. Or even just film a bunch of people in a restaurant waiting room and then he judges them. The problem with that is that the show would have to blur their faces, and then the whole exercise is meaningless for the audience. C) If tips are automatically included on the bill, that actually might improve service. With voluntary tips, if you don't like the service, the diner can either complain or tip less, or tip normally and leave a bad review or do nothing. If tips are included, the diner now has fewer ways of expressing his or her displeasure and is more likely to complain which is worse for the server than low tips.

In USA, servers are TAXED on tips, whether they receive them or not! If you don’t tip your server, they literally lose money to the government, bc tips are “figured into” their reduced wage. I was an excellent server who made $200 per day in tips, but got paid $3.25 an hour, full time job, no benefits.

This is Jackson, the server from the video here. I see serving as a sales job. We’re selling you a great experience and building the check as large as possible in exchange for a commission (a tip). I think making serving a commission based job would be interesting. 15 percent of our sales go to us with no hourly. Reward based systems like commission or tipping gives the best out of workers. Think of the last time you went to the dmv or Burger King. How was your service? Is that the energy you want when you go out to eat to celebrate a birthday? Much love to you all, whether you believe in tipping or not! ❤

We are excellent tippers even with takeout but I’m getting discouraged by poor service. I’m a naturally friendly person who likes to connect but I’d say we get good service 20% of the time, great service 5% and mediocre to poor 75%. Tipping should be based on great service…if you’re just getting my food to the table that is your job. If you serve the food with a great attitude and make it more enjoyable I enjoy tipping. We tipped a waitperson $100 for a $25 breakfast (I just had tea) she was the worst server but had a great attitude…we left the tip and restaurant so didn’t see her reaction but hope she somehow got that it was about her effort.

if the service is good you should tip and tip what is required and yes that is 20% that may seem unfair to some people but it’s rhe social norm of todays society and it is 20% so that servers can live comfortably because many of them like myself at one point depended on that money for things like rent and bills etc. honestly though if you don’t have the money too tip that high you shouldn’t be going out to eat period

In my 7 years at my current job here’s what I noticed Best tippers: middle aged women 40-55, especially when I ask them for ID, they feel flattered and leave my a nice tip. senior citizens Worst tippers: college aged kids because they are “too poor” to do so. church goers, they expect amazing service but will leave a church pamphlet instead.

Senior citizens are not good tippers. A large percentage of them tip the same thing as was tipped thirty five years ago.
