Boat Friends! I’m excited to share with you the arrival of the majestic and huge ship 'COE Luisa' in Duluth, which sailed in from the chilling waters of Lake Superior. This remarkable ship docked at Port Terminal on April 21, 2024, carrying a significant load of project cargo from Europe. You will also see a tugboat lending some assistance to help this big monster vessel into the dock.
The COE Luisa, a general cargo ship launched in 2007, is not just any vessel. It’s a powerhouse equipped with two massive deck cranes, each capable of a combined lift of up to 360 metric tons, making it a standout in the Great Lakes for handling heavy cargo. It’s also built to navigate through icy waters, being classified under the Finnish/Swedish 1A Ice Class by the American Bureau of Shipping. With a gross tonnage of 9,627 and a deadweight of approximately 12,696 metric tons, its size is as impressive as its capability.
Adding to its grandeur, the COE Luisa boasts a powerful horn that surprised me with a reading of 110 dB on my meter, ensuring its presence is felt and heard even before it’s seen!
Join me in experiencing the power and beauty of the Great Lakes shipping scene with the COE Luisa’s latest journey. Take a minute to leave a comment about what you think about this ship!

Hi Mike and boat friends ! Just catching up As Chuck said pretty inpresseve ship ! The cranes can reach across for heavy lifting from the opposite side Using the hull for stability Back in 1983 we built a replica of Joshua Slokems Spray for the president of vise grip in Europe We launched it in port stanley he sailed it to Cleveland and they loaded it on a similar ship for the trip to Europe Coordinating meeting the window of when the ship was in Cleveland was planned 6 months in advance The horm blast never gets old you can feel it right to the bone ! Another Excellent Video! Have a great day ! Mike and Boat Friends !

Mike - I believe I heard you say that the motive power of the Coe Louisa was a 1,000 HP Caterpillar diesel engine. That seems awfully small for a 450-foot saltie - about 1 1/2 Mack trucks! I would think that a power plant of 4000-5000 HP would be the necessary minimum - the same size as the locomotive on the front of a CN iron ore train. And how calm is Lake Superior!

Mike, man those cranes blew me away! However and believe it or not, they still pale in comparison to the Big Lift yellow ships like Happy River and Happy Ranger. These cranes are rated 180 mt SWL. Big Lift ships are rated at 400 mt SWL. SWL is the Safe Working Load. Still the Coe Luisa has huge cranes!! And boy did the captain unleash the sound! A well done Master Salute. Great sounding horn.!! I'll be updating our sound chart. I'm sure this salty will score well. Those large pleasure craft were being delivered to Cleveland, Ohio.....from Europe. That picture was taken in the Welland Canal on this trip. Thanks so much for doing this video. I'm in my Happy Hour at the moment and this video was the star of the show. It seems like this year a lot more salties are coming to Duluth. Such a long voyage for loading up just 12,000 tons. The Coe Luisa is a beauty. Her lifeboats, do they just slide down the angled ramps into the sea? Wouldn’t that be kind of a rough landing on the water from that height? Or do they get lowered down the old fashioned way somehow? I love your videos, Mike!
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 8 днів тому
Regarding the lifeboat, yes, they just dropped straight down into the sea. There’s a few videos that show this happening. It looks somewhat violent when they hit the water, but it’s better to be in something floating the night. Also, did you see the video yesterday of the Gott? You have to check that one out. Great one, Mike. What determines when a Captain can give a Master's Salute?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 11 днів тому
Fantastic question. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

@chuckg6039 2 дні тому
Hi there Marie. I've mentioned this most important line several times in the past. In this video, the symbol shows up quite well starting at 6:53. Per the National Ocean Service the "Plimsoll line is a reference mark located on a ship’s hull that indicates the maximum depth to which the vessel may be safely immersed when loaded with cargo". To learn more about this load line, folks can check out this web site: oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/plimsoll-line.html Obviously the ship was very lightly loaded, as you can see the load is nowhere near maximum. I really enjoy looking for all the various hull markings on salties. They tend to have more than the lakers. In this case, the Coe Luisa certainly didn't disappoint. There were plenty!

Those ocean going ships have a pilot. Great question. All ocean-going ships operating on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway are required by law to hire a U.S. or Canadian pilot to assist with navigation. However, the actual Great Lakes ships that we see do not need a pilot because their captains are already certified on the Great Lakes.
