Since Russia’s full-scale invasion into Ukraine, Sweden has grown more wary of Russian aggression. The Swedish government wants its citizens to be ready for the worst-case scenario and is encouraging them to become "preppers."
After Russia illegally annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and stepped up military exercises along the Baltic states, Sweden responded in 2017 by reintroducing compulsory military service. Sweden is expanding and better equipping its armed forces, while gradually increasing its defense budget. When Sweden requested NATO membership earlier this year, it marked a historic reversal of the nation’s longtime stance of military non-alignment.
Now, it’s up to Swedish citizens to ready themselves for the unthinkable and actively prepare for disaster. Robin has been prepping for years. The father sees to it that his home in Stockholm always has enough supplies for his family to survive independently for several weeks. He takes regular trips to the forest to spend a few days in the wilderness. His children always come with him, so that they, too, can practice survival skills.
In Sweden, interest in prepping is at an all-time high. Across all social strata, people are carefully stocking tins, training survival skills, and even learning how to shoot. And the preppers are networking. Pär Plüschke is 38 and offers prepping courses. He says enrollment used to be manageable but now he can hardly keep up with the demand.
In the wake of intensifying armed conflicts, the disastrous effects of climate change, and a growing threat of cyber attacks, more and more Swedes want to take action. Instead of simply discussing these issues, they feel this is the best way to assume responsibility for themselves and protect their community.

I am in northern sweden which is very different to the Stockholm area. A lot of people are quite self sufficiant up here. Hunting, fishing, harvesting berries, making enough firewood for the 6-7 month winter etc happens in almost every household. Here in the north you always have power outages, extreme weather etc so it always makes sense to be ready for everything. What people elsewhere call "prepping" is just normal everyday life in northern sweden.

Last winter the county water lines burst in my rural area of the US. A few years ago there was an ice storm in the winter, and thousands of people were without electricity and phone for a week, or longer. I had everything I needed. The worse part for me was the few days spent clearing the downed tree limbs and repairing my tool shed. I was warm every day and bathed in hot water every day. It pays to be prepared.

I believe that the Swedish parents have gifted their children the greatest of tools, the impulse to not panic, and to not dread. For example, they never taught her to do it specifically, but their young daughter guided her friends to use the solution of spelling out the helpful words when a group of friends became lost, solely because of her frame of mind. She didn’t panic nor dread, so her mind was free to come up with a solution. What a wonderful gift, right? The gift of a tranquil mind. What great parents she has. I built a 5000 sq ft home incase my kids ever needed a place. The pandemic proved that to be the right thing to do. My 23 and 29 year old sons live at home and have been prepping for the worst. Summer of 2020, they dozed the land and have planted 50 early, mid and late blueberry bushes on top of the 20 I already had. They've planted multi verities of fruit trees on top of the almost 20 I had. They are growing gardens along the acreage borders. They built a ram pump and pump water 200 ft altitude into three 2,800 gal tanks that gravity flow to the house and gardens. It's now a jungle of food around here, so I asked them why so much food and they said to help others in need. They are drying most everything for storage and have collected jars of seeds to share. They also invested heavily in the market just in case it turns to treasure when they reach my age. They also pay the bills and stock our over kill pantry with years of foods. The last thing you want is a storage bank of food/medical supplies in a large building with an arrow on it saying "rob me." Make an escape route, bury food and supplies on the way to be dug up when necessary. Hiding in your house is THE LAST PLACE you want to be, rich homes will be the first ones looted and burned..as resources get more scarce EVERY structure standing will be raided. If you insist on trying to live in your home, and have an option of digging tunnels underneath, take it seriously. At least a hidden bunker or a safe room at minimum thats invisible underground.

There's some thing you're prohibited to do as well of course. In school we're taught about this and we have a long tradition of being out in nature, because we're _encouraged_ to from early years. Therefore we get experience and knowledge about trees, flowers, what to eat, how to behave and what to do if you get lost etc. It was a good help when me and a friend got lost in a mountain area when I was about 20 years old.

Excellent video covering important issues which can effect most people. Loss of electricity, gas or water supplies, unstocked shops and petrol stations, flooding or other events may occur that mean you can only rely on what you currently have. Sufficient supplies to last up to 14 days without being able to resupply would be extremely useful. Being prepared gives you control over your life rather than making you dependent on others, its also hugely beneficial for morale and mental health wellbeing. Forming groups is an excellent idea, pooled resources and capabilities and increased morale and companionship can only be a good thing. The parents are right to make their children aware of how to be self sufficient and to think for themselves. The skills their children are learning will last a lifetime and can save their lives and the lives of others. Making it fun and enjoyable and an adventure for the children is great for everyone. They are a lovely family and the children are adorable, they're also a good, cohesive team together!

This would really bother me. You can't have your own space or bins in your own house that you both share to do with what you want? He doesn't have to prep or understand, but why should that stop you? Is he more of the breadwinner and "low key feels he needs to exert control in that way? If not, do your thing. What's a few bins or extra water or cans in the basement, out of the way closet, a bed, the garage, etc.?

Most Nordic people are helped with prepping by still having some connection to nature and recognise at least the common berries if nothing else, and several can identify a few mushrooms and other wild foods, as well as which part of the axe you aim at a piece of wood and which part to use for knocking things if a hammer is not available.

@erik bengt sorry to burst your bubble but the 15 to 20 percent you’re speaking of are the once stupidly hoarding toilet paper once the conflict has already started. Very few are well prepared in this country. Few outsides the cities and even not that many in the countryside.

I'm an American and happy to see that your community is getting prepared for any emergency scenario. Here we use the term prepper for people that have extra food, water and other supplies as we also know that we can't rely on the government should a disaster unfold. Unfortunately only less than one percent of our country is aware of what crises is coming. A world war against china and russia is what I most worry about. I pray that the rest of the world stays safe and that the Ukrainian invasion is where it stops

I think doing non-silly and practical things help. There's a hydro dam upriver, what do we do if it breaks. A lot of people volunteer in a civil defence capacity, the municipality could be bolstered by some hundred volunteers.

I'm not an all-out prepper, but I've done what I can to have extra food and supplies, even when I couldn't afford it. A couple different times I've had to use up the extra stores, then build it back up. You never know when electricity will go out for an extended time, you may experience an extended health crisis, job loss or natural disaster. Even a small food storage can get you through tough times, or even help family members.

It would be fascinating to know why some cultures are more inclined to prepare for potential hardship while other cultures have a more live in the moment approach. It can result in a massive misallocation of resources and waste. I am sure a I remember an old parable about this. One animal spend the summer storing food while the other laughed and simply enjoyed the sunshine. Only one survived winter.

I think it's important to take into account the geographical location and political/economical history of these areas. Europe has seen wars in the past and have seen tensions that could lead to wars. Sweden's neutrality stance means they don't want to have to take sides and they would rather avoid being apart of a conflict. But believing someone won't cross your borders with ill intentions is a bad lesson to learn (as a native american, we hear lots of stories growing up from our elders about people not from here that came to take from us and how they did it by being dishonest or by genocide.)
@Sonkens

As a Swede I would say climate has a huge role and also culture. If you stay in a place where there is sunshine and swimming weather all year round ofcourse it will be harder to except hardships. In sweden even in suburban cities you have to do some level of preping just to survive going to school and back. Even an 8 year old Child knows how to dress and behave in the cold. The people in this video live in really central cities, most swedes dont even need to learn any of this skills at all but instead grew up doing it most of our lives :)

When the Rus comes the swedes will cry out, stop, you are hurting our feelings, knowing the Rus will totally understand its bad to hurt ppls feelings and stop killing us.. The great threat isent the Rus, its within. And it has already started. (S)weden is dead, we just hasent realised it yet. Naiv, is the word.
