@@melllo3966 Traditions and advancement are not in conflict with each other. Korea Singapore used to be 3rd world countries. I do not live in Germany, but I have East German friends. They shared with me about how East German is so far behind West Germany. They themselves' culture and customs are closer to Russian or Eastern European than members of Western Europe.

the problem is communism destroyed any notion of startups. and the brainwashing still remains. in DDR there was no such concept as unemployment. and definitely no concept of profit, sustainability, competition in business etc. so until a few generations pass you won’t be able to inculcate that kinda culture in those areas.

the problem is corruption ... the same corruption destroyed east german industry after 1989 and the same corrupt elements waste away the money that got send to help rebuild this place ... but many people and even politicians refer to us as more like a colony than a part of their country. If you wanna visit east germany the Vogtland in saxony would be a great place to visit but make sure you have someone around to translate for you as far as I remember.

The reasons are totally different. East Germany lost it's manufacturing during the war and was cut off from the west so each developed it's own industry. The automotive BOOM of Germany in the 1960s and until today was all in the west and so the east saw none of this due to being in the USSR. On the other hand, the Rust Belt lost out due to many reasons, competition from other states, the low cost model of the rust belt easily lost to Asia and even locally to Mexico. The high end manufacturing lost to California and Texas which together are around 18% of all US manufacturing. That said, the rust belt is still a big player and has a potential to attract factories leaving China so I can see the rust belt and countries like Germany growing the manufacturing industry in the next few years and beyond.

The people in eastern Germany got scr*wed-over by the Soviets and forced to tolerate the influx of ethnic (and superior-acting) Soviet Russians for 50+ years. They want to live as Germans in Germany. And by "German" they mean living in a community of ethnic (European) Germans; listening to church bells, not howling from minarets.. They aren't the only ones who do not view their country as a pluralist state like the USA or the Russian Federation. The Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians as well as those in the Baltic states have the same sentiments as those in eastern Germany. All of these countries lived under the boot of Soviet Russia.

None of this really matters, though, as towns die all the time, they do not have an infinite lifespan. Many areas in Spain and Portugal have been abandoned in a very similiar way since the slow industrialization of their economies (Iberian peninsula was late in that sense). People move and flow according to advantages and disadvantages, it is not normal for a population to stay in a place, if there is no benefit to staying beyond just "I'm used to this place".
