As the Republican National Convention gets underway, we reviewed our interviews with top economists to see how they understand the economic impact of President Trump’s first term. Jeffery Sachs took a hard stance saying the Trump presidency is "the worst presidency in American history," aside from James Buchanan before the civil war. Paul Krugman expressed that President Trump’s ability to break Washington’s obsession with national debt was a positive contribution. Joseph Stiglitz hoped that other countries will not return the same “ugliness” as President Trump’s protectionism. Watch the video to find out how some experts evaluate President Trump's work so far.

When there was a travel ban from China on January 31 it most have also been due to nobody reading. To continue the theme of not reading Joe Biden initially called the travel ban xenophobic. Yet somehow a handful of North Eastern States thought it was a good idea to put people recovering from covid-19 in nursing homes. Nearly all US covid deaths are from these states. At the time when deaths were the worst, media outlets were also asking for a national response and propping up these governors. That would have been disastrous if we followed their policies on a national level. There is also another issue with everything Trump gets behind being deemed as bad. Hydroxychloroquine treatment has shown it reduces mortality by 75%, yet there are a number of states that outright ban the use of this treatment. There are a couple other states that make it difficult to prescribe this treatment. Trump is not an expert in epidemiology. He left it to his experts. USA's debt to gdp ratio is 136%,the highest since WW2 and the federal reserve is massively printing money which will destroy the value of the currency. Germany post WW1 tried to print money to pay reparations but it destroyed the currency's value and generated massive hiperinflation , didn't help at paying the debt and made the problem 1000% worse. The solution is to cut spending
@newstartyt3700
@newstartyt3700 Рік тому
Yes, cut spending on military that is at a whopping 800 billion and makes up 50% of government spending, cut police spending which is at 100 billion. Another high amount. Instead, implementing a 70% top marginal tax rate on the rich, as it has always been the case in the US from the 1950s to the late 1970s. For example, the Nordic countries have lower debt to gdp ratio than the USA, and yet they have strong public safety nets. This is what spending should go to. Government towards public safety nets is important. The 70% top marginal tax rate will pay for the massive increase in public safety net spending. Such as education, healthcare and infrastructure but also for social security.

when Trump promised to bring back factory jobs, it was a tall order. In Trump’s first three years, the manufacturing sector did add some jobs, and it was a big improvement in labor market as well , but in 2020, the pandemic ruined what e progress those workers had enjoyed. As of September, the sector was down 164,000 jobs, or 1.3% from when Trump took office. That said, layoffs at factories were even steeper under Presidents Reagan, Obama and the Bushes, as globalization and technological progress reduced America’s manufacturing workforce. So speaking of manufacture jobs Trump did do much better than Obama particularly sector of energy, industrial and agriculture, samething can be said with median income, the pandemic did change a lot. the corporate tax cuts and deregulation did create bigger deficit, but national debt was relatively ok before the pandemic. the strategy of trade war though harmful to certain extent on GDP, but by 2020 earlier period, a series of trade deal have increase US exports and reduce the deficit by 17 percent to 2018, and also first time lower than 2016 in the deficit with China. While the difficulty of pandemic have caused surge in imports it ramp up the deficit to record high with other nations except China, it is safe to say that the strategy of Trump tariff policy is making some progress in addressing intellectual property and fair trade deals things a lot president does not refer to, and to certain extent it starts to work well in Feb, it is very likely without pandemic an infrastructure bill would be passed to follow up after trade deals. And there are a lot of investment being made in US corporations at home as well in manufacture sectors such as Steel, production continues to recover back and plants are being reopened even during pandemic ,The U.S. now has a more modern steel industry than it has had for decades-and is producing 70% of its steel via EAF, one of the highest figures among major steel-producing nations. One thing that is not fair is that though Trump end first term with high unemployment rate , US endures economical recession, but that same thing can be said with other nations such as Europe, it is also safe to say Europe is in recession and some of their death per millions are much higher than US such as italy, spain, UK, etc, it is not exactly fair to judge the circumstance of the pandemic only, though the US pandemic is not particularly good in this case, but it would not change the economically drastic better. it is reasonable to say that Trump can reduce the death slightly more with certain measures, but to certain extent it would not make dramatic change, and the pandemic still depends on vaccine distribution.

@decus9544 3 роки тому
@@willty3099 I agree for the most part that the Republicans have been worse on this issue than the Democrats, with the effect of their tax cuts often being greater than that of the increased spending of the Democrats. As to why they have not actively tried to balance the budget, it is again, because they are hypocrites, and care more about trying to starve government of funds in order to get welfare programmes defunded than they do about having a balanced budget. Again this doesn't mean that the public debt and deficit isn't every bit as important as the Republicans say it is. They can be truthful when stating that it is an issue, and yet at the same time lack the honesty to continue to state the issue when their own guys are in power or to actually attempt to fix it. The public debt is a real and substantial issue, that yes, has been weaponised by the Republicans and their news networks, but a real and substantial issue nonetheless, and the correct response to this is not to deny that it is a real issue, but to do what you have just done and point to the fact that the Republicans, while being very happy to point it out, have shown appalling poor motivation to actually address it, to the point of being worse than the Democrats.

Trump & Repubs passed a Tax Cut Bill. The Bill made CEOs, Rich People, Corporations ALL Happy. Most of the Corporations used it for stock buybacks increasing the wealth of stockholders. If you didn't own stocks, then too bad. Trump placed Tariffs on Steel and products from China, resulting in an increase of Farm bankruptcies even with his Farm Bailout. Still waiting for the manufacturing jobs to come back from Mexico and China. Still waiting for Affordable Health Care for ALL. Still waiting for 21st Century Infrastructure. Still waiting for Mexico to Pay for the WALL. Still waiting for the Federal Deficit to be fixed. Still waiting for a Safer America. Promises Made, Promises BROKEN! Trump has tried to promote that he has improved the economy and many have bought into this, but consider the following: 1 - US Federal Budget Deficits - When Trump took office the deficit was $666 billion. At the end of 2019 it was $984 million. Source: US Management and Budget. Also remember Trump campaigned in 2016 to eliminate the national deft. Currently it is over $1 trillion and climbing rapidly due to the pandemic. 2 - Average Wage growth after inflation - Obama 1.3% vs Trump .8%. Source - Bureau of Labor Statistics 3 - Job gains - Obama 8.1million in his last 36 months vs. Trump 6.6 million in his first 6 months. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics Bottom line is that Trump tries to take credit for a strong economy but he is coasting on Obama’s recovery from the 2008 economic down.

@@IanHlinak Haha, I'd like to consider myself a young voters too, I would have no problem voting for a conservative. But not trump, his international policy to me feels like the logic of "If we have the biggest guns, why not just make things simpler" -- quid pro quos, threats, and casually throwing around accusations that he can't back, he's compromising the carefully-designed manipulation system and the "Brand of US" which I consider the third most powerful tools that took US over 70 years to build since WWII. If publicly strong-arming people is the most efficient way, monarchy and slavery wouldn't have been eliminated. And all of it for what ? To rally and capitalized the nationalist so he can win another election? I rather he took a couple billions out of the stats budget and directly into his own pocket because it will be far less harmful to the nation and American business. About Sanders, well, overthrowing monarchs who fought(or their parents fought) their way into their position are not "technically fair" either, but that's the price we pay for a civilized, efficient society-- as well as progressive tax. So if people think we can afford a better social safety net, I open to listen to their statistics, but that's out of the question now.
