🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

I seriously think what pissed off the authorities the most is the fact that you chose to hang out with the locals to get a real feel of the city - which ultimately reflected the level of poverty and dilapidation of the infrastructure, something they're trying to hide - instead of going to the pristine beaches of Sharm El-Sheikh or the perfectly polished millionaire neighborhoods in New Cairo where many tourists choose to visit. I have to say it takes a lot of courage to do what you did. Hats off to you, sir!

Nothing to do with police trying to hide stuff. Many of them are also poor and living in bad areas. A lot of them don't like their own government. Everyone knows that Cairo is a bit of a slum city, even in tourist areas, so I don't see why they would be hiding what we already know. The Arab Spring was 12 years ago now. The protests stopped several years ago and people are getting on with life. The honest truth is that white, Christian, westerners are just seen as suspicious, with bad intentions and morals, so they kind of look down on us. If you aren't a regular, money spending tourist going to the Red Sea or Pyramids, then they will be suspicious. Sure they want you to spend western money, but they don't like you and act suspicious of you because of your ethnicity, religion, culture etc. It is similar in many Middle-eastern Muslim countries. I have also experienced the same thing in Tunisia, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran etc. If anything the authorities are ultimately trying to facilitate a bribe from you, as they know you have money. Like they don't respect you. Obviously there are many good Egyptians who don't care about any of that, but a large portion of the country sees it this way. It is partly due to culture but mostly due to Islam. I noticed it with a lot of people in Sharm El-Sheikh, except for the actual hotel workers. A lot of shop owners, tour operators and taxi drivers are rude, inconsiderate and look down on you. They act different to their 'brothers' though.

Thanks for showing this side of Egypt. Went there in 2015 and will never go back. Cairo was a headache where you have to keep an eye out for pickpockets, beggars, and thieves. The pyramids? Every vendor there was running a scam and they'd get upset if you tried questioning their methods and prices and law enforcement are all on their side no matter what. I just got back from a trip there a week ago and you really shouldn't cancel your trip because of what you saw. I mean not all Egyptian people are like *that*, and of course from a culture loving tourist's point of view, seeing the pyramids and all of the temples (in Luxor, Aswan, etc.), going to a bedouin village and riding a camel, and then having a 3-4 day rest in a resort on the beach in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh was magnificent and a totally worth it unforgettable experience.

@@eeespartak Of course, no sane person will say that Egyptians are 'bad people' but you do have to understand, your government being corrupt is more scarier than a scammer asking for money. There are countless videos, articles and personal experience shared throughout all social media by many travelers who experienced all this. I would say that as long as you keep your head down, don't record, avoid the 'bad areas' and just go for the experience then you most definitely will be fine.

I hate to be "that guy" but all the politics and scummy producers aside if your daughter thinks that animals raised for food are treated any differently elsewhere in the world, including in the supposedly "enlightened" west, she's got a lot to learn. We just put it out of sight and out of mind. If you have the stomach for it just look up the documentary "Dominion" (Warning: I do mean if you have the stomach for it, this is not an exaggeration) that shows that if anything we're less humane because we have to mass produce the food, which means cutting corners in animal comfort and them being quick and cleanly dispatched. And this is coming from someone who still eats meat, I ain't even on some vegan crusade, I'm just pointing out that if anyone thinks this is only something "they" do they're dead wrong.
@rikumajumder1558
@rikumajumder1558 2 роки тому
@@Goldenkitten1 Factory Farming is morally wrong, everyone can see that. Muslims are the 2nd biggest in terms of population and some of the biggest meat consumers, that is also known. Islam prohibits anything other than Halal, we also know this. Other religions don't care if their food is Halal or not but Muslims will not eat if theirs aren't. Now look at the factory farming videos and tell me how they are dispatching the animals. I am not saying that the living conditions are also not sh*tty but their deaths are inhumanely painful. Factory Farming is wrong and Halal is wrong.
@Goldenkitten1

@@rikumajumder1558 More or less what I said. That the animal suffers either way. My post was in reference to them saying their daughter couldn't handle how the camels were treated. But the reality is that it's no more humane here than it is there, we just hide it in shiny factories. "Out of sight, out of mind" and all that.

I had the same bad experience when traveled to Egypt, I love to shoot pictures and videos and I have decent gear, so I was so exited to take all my gear and shoot in Egypt. The moment I entered the airport I was treated like hostile person, I was locked for hours, questioned by all sort of police officers, and later was denied to take any of my gear with me. It was the worst experience I've ever had, they could easily say that cameras is not allowed instead of scaring the tourists this way. My other business trips to Egypt was always with one pair of jeans and few changes, phone charger and that's all. Stayed in hotel and never leave unless I was with escort of business partners. People are nice in general, but never figured why they hate cameras that much

In Cairo, I tried to take a picture of one of the news flyovers that had a mosque behind (the idea was to show the contrast between new and old). A woman run towards a cop and shouted to him him that I was taking pictures. The cop took my camera took my passport and all three went to a police van where the police officer repeated my terrible crime to his chief. This one called his chief at the police station, checked once again my passport, hold my camera and after more that twenty minute someone had the brilliant idea that if I erased the picture, the problem was over. Same situation on the train to Iskandareya to Port Said when I tried to take a picture of a ship crossing the channel: here the good patriot was a soldier that wanted my camera, my passport and some money from me to say nothing to his chiefs. Fortunately there were police officers in the train and stopped him. Same story at a humble wharf when I tried to take a picture of a boat that crosses the river in Damietta: here the patriots were the passengers that shouted angrily that it was mamnuah (forbidden). Same story at the metro of Cairo, wher shooting pictures is a risky business too. And I speak ameya and can make myself understood quite perfectly!

Here are a couple of interesting facts I thought I'd share: Not just high-quality filming gear but even average cameras have been a big no-no here in Egypt for as long as I can remember and it only got worse after the Revolution and the amount of foreign coverage of it here. Authorities simply won't let you film anything here, especially in El Tahrir Square (for reasons too silly to mention) where the 2011 revolution started. Also, I found it interesting how the only pics and videos that the police forced you to "delete" (at least from what is shown in this video) are the ones you shot in the bread bakery. Bread in Egypt is not just the staple food carrier or "utensil" as Sonny called it; it holds a MAJOR political significance. In the revolution, the motto was literally translated to "Bread, Freedom, Social Justice". One of the motives for the breakout of the Revolution was how hard it got for people to attain bread which almost equals famine for Egyptians. Anyway, glad you liked the food and I hope that the socio-political problems in Egypt get fixed asap because it would be a shame to see such a beautiful country with such a mind-blowing culture and history go to waste.
