The development of the face explained in a very simple way.
This is part one of two, in the next videos I will discuss the embryology of the teeth and eyes.
If you are completely new to embryology and you want to understand it quickly, this should be the first video you watch:

SUMMARY FOR YOUR NOTES:
How the face develops:
- At the end of the forth week, facial prominences consisting primarily of neural crest-derived mesenchyme and formed mainly by the first pair of pharyngeal arches appear.
- Maxillary prominences are lateral to the stomoduem
- Mandibular prominences are caudal.
- Frontonasal prominence is formed by proliferation of mesenchyme.
- During the fifth week, the nasal placodes invaginate to form nasal pits.
- During weeks 5-7 the maxillary prominences continue to grow, filling the medial part of the face, compressing the medial nasal prominences. The cleft between the medial nasal prominence and the maxillary prominence is lost, and the two fuse.
- The upper lip formed by the two medial nasal prominences and the two maxillary prominences.
- Lower lip and jaw form from the mandibular prominence that merge across the midline. Initially the maxillary and lateral nasal prominences are separated by a deep furrow, the nasolacrimal groove. Ectoderm in the floor of this groove forms a solid epithelial cord that detaches from the overlying ectoderm.
- After canalisation, the cord forms the nasolacrimal duct; its upper end widens to form the lacrimal sac.
- The nasolacrimal duct runs from the medial corner of the eye to the inferior meatus of the nasal cavity, and the maxillary prominences enlarge to form the cheeks and maxillae.
- The nose is formed from the five facial prominences: the frontal prominence gives rise to the bridge, the merged medial nasal prominence provide the crest and tip and the lateral nasal prominence form the sides.
Intermaxillary segment (the primary palate)
- The result of medial growth of the two MNP merge not only at the surface but deeper. The structure formed is the intermaxillary segment:
1. Labial component which forms the philtrum of the upper lip
2. Upper jaw components which carries the four incisor teeth
3. A palatal component, which forms the triangular primary palate
- The intermaxillary segment is continuous with the rostral portion of the nasal septum which is formed by the frontal prominence
The secondary palate:
- Outgrowths called the palatine shelves from the maxillary process appear during week 6.
- They grow obliquely and inferiorly but end up in their horizontal position above the tongue finally during week 7-8.
- The outgrowths fuse with the anterior plate from the intermaxillary segment.
- The incisive foramen marks the midline between the primary and secondary palates.
Nasal cavities:
- During week 6 nasal pits deepen.
- Oronasal membrane degenerates
- The definitive choanae lies at the junction of the nasal cavity and the pharynx.
- The paranasal sinuses develop as diverticula of the lateral nasal wall and extends into the maxilla, ethmoid, frontal, and sphenoid bones.
- They reach their full size by puberty and they contribute to the shape of the face.

Dr. Minass, I remember watching your videos back in 2018 when I was a first year student trying to understand embryology for my anatomy exam. Today I'm back on here as a final year medical student, revising facial embryology because of cleft lip/ palate for my pediatrics exam!! Just wanted to thank you for making it so simple for all of us, and happy holidays to you!

I’ve been watching your channel on embryonic development. It is really great. I do have a back ground in biology even though I do not have a degree in this field. I’ve been using your work as an aid in writing about my personal life experiences. It is my hope that this will be a aid in help people would fall into the intersex body development type to find answers. Over a year ago I wrote you about the male sexual development video you did. At that time I indicated that I was going to have two more surgeries related to needed repairs on my body from testicular / ovarian type cancer and the failure of my gonads to develop fully. One testis developed as a germ cell teratoma, ovotestis sort of mishmash testis meets Frankenstein organ. The other testis did mature as a testis but only matured to about half of normal adult size. Not sure just why this testis never fully reached the adult size? In as much as my alphafeto proteins were are 10200 at one point in my life I think maybe having this high levels caused the testis growth to be limited. None of my doctors could speculate on this. I’m surprised at the large number of people I’ve encountered over the years who have similar issues as myself. In the small community we live in there was a fellow who was under going chemo and surgeries at the very same time as myself. We used to have coffee together during this time. His mother took DES during his gestation as well as my brother in law who also had a teratoma germ cell in place of his testis. Have you seen this happen ? I did marry and have been married for many years despite me having difficulty in having sexual relations. I have hypogonadism and gender dysphoria. Go figure. Lol Well we make our lives work and are still madly in love. At least I was born with the love gene and a great sense of humor. Keep up the great presentations.
@minass
@minass 5 років тому
Yes I remember you David. You're a bit of a hero having to deal with all of that to be honest - and still keeping your sense of humour, finding a wife and happiness. The book your writing would be very interesting. I haven't yet experienced someone quite like you yet, and I don't have the answers you have been asking your doctors either. Just a question, why do you think you have gender dysphoria? Is it because you identify as a female despite having mostly male organs, or is it because the way you were born, with both female and male organs, subsequently made you confused as to "knowing" which gender you were?
@davidmicheletti6292
@davidmicheletti6292 5 років тому
Minass I wish I knew just why I’ve seen myself as more female than male. By age eight I knew somehow that I wasn’t a male but more of a hybrid of sorts. For me it was more or less simply a fact of who I was. It wasn’t until I had surgery to bring my right undescended testis into place that things started to take a nasty turn. Even though nothing was said to me at first it became clear that there was more going on that was not conveyed to me by the doctors. A child in the next bed had surgery for the same thing I did accept he had both of his testis operated on. I never spoke to him as he was kept drug the few days that he was there but the doctors made no attempted to hide him from my sight. A few days after our surgery a women I had never seen before walked over to my bed and asked me if I was being nice to this child. She scared me and I could only manage to nod my head yes. She then went on to say that they had saved me from becoming a girl but couldn’t save him from becoming one. She finished and walked out the door without any additional explanation of what she was talking about. My mind raced and I thought that maybe she knew my secret that I felt I was deep down a girl and maybe this child too was being punished somehow. I know this sound odd but I was a very young child when this happened. The point is I did not know that they could even change someone’s gender or why someone would. A short time later he was wheel away to surgery and I never saw him again. I suppressed these events until I married my spouse and then told her about it. I did feel I was a women but never acted on those feelings. Then starting in my early twenties I started to feel pregnant in addition to feeling female. We even joked about me feeling pregnant all the time. To be honest it felt good. Well many years passed and about twenty years ago these feelings were becoming very strong and it was at that point that that useless testis that had been surgically brought down began to grow. I mean it grew at a very rapid rate. I went to my doctor and suggested that maybe it could be a teratoma or cancer. He said no it wasn’t and told me to come back in a week or two. When I came back he still didn’t do anything and told me to come back again. After my third visit he still refuse to do a alphafeto protein tests but did contact a radiologist to do a ultrasound. When I went in for this women to do this ultrasound she was clearly dying of embarrassment. When she started I could see a tumor on the monitor that filled the whole scrotum and even extended into my lower abdomen. When I pointed it out she said that it was a hydrocele or fluid and nothing more. As I turned to challenge her in her assessment I saw a fellow standing hiding behind a door leading in the next room. He had been there the whole time. I did say a anything I just got up and walked out the door. I was so embarrassed that I never spoke of this again. A week later my doctor called and said that there wasn’t anything wrong with me accept that there was just a little fluid. I wait another few weeks and went in once more accept this time I demanded this testis be surgically removed. He said I was over reacting but indicated he would call the surgeon. Two weeks later the surgeon called and said he would take it out but only if he could do it after the holidays and then only if he could do it using a local. When I went in he gave me two shot in my abdomen and when he cut me open a tumor erupted from the wound. I was wide awake. He just kept on shooting pain medication ahead of his cutting until he freed a 10cm malignant germ cell teratoma. I was pregnant! A second 17.5cm was removed four months later a the Mayo Clinic. I’ve never gone back to that first clinic. I was given on a few months to live but I managed to survive a living hell. In time the feeling of being pregnant when away but not the gender dysphoria. I left out so much detail but you get the idea of what happened. Accept that I never sued anyone. It happened and that was that. I lost a good eight months of work a untold pain. But the self discovery was worth it all. Now maybe you can see just why I’m driven to write and study this.
