"Homelessness" is one terrible symptom of a disease plaguing more and more of us every day: overpriced housing. Dan Bryant, a generous pastor in Eugene, OR took this issue to heart and with the help of a vibrant community around him tried various solutions, until he finally came up with a genius idea and an absolutely gorgeous implementation! Let us take you on a virtual visit of "EMERALD VILLAGE". Nearing completion, this beautiful permanent tiny house village for the previously unhoused sets a game-changing example for communities all around the world that are trying to find compassionate solutions to their own housing crisis.

I love that they require everyone to contribute at least 50 hours toward the building of their home. That is what gives this project so much dignity; it allows these people to regain self-respect and purpose after their homeless experience. It lifts people out of depression and gets them excited about doing something to help themselves

My bank's mortgage director told me people destroy them. That is, I asked if they had considered renting unoccupied houses to poor people, just charging what they could afford to pay. The bank would have someone taking care of the house, people would have a home. He said they've actually tried that. The houses get destroyed. I think there's a lot of anger bottled up inside poor people.

@@veramae4098 I think there is some difference in putting people in bank owned houses and expecting them to take care of the house and the way Emerald Village is run. I'm going to do this. I'm going to create housing for the homeless in my future. I want to, because struggling is NOT fun or okay to let happen... I've struggled my whole life to have stuff, like a home, food, all that, and have moved 13 times in 19 years... It's awful, and I think it's something everyone should help with, to get those less fortunate people off of the streets and into a secure place. A home.

I'm still without shelter, cold and hungry after 30years and they are still kneeling in the chapel praying and walk out to drive their BMWs to have their lunch at 5-Star hotels with their pastor and cell group members, have retreats at resorts, fly overseas to have their private holidays every year end....you know what I'm saying, don't you?

@Thomas Lucas why am I not surprised. The California goverment does not care for the poor and homeless. They are actively ticketing you to homelessnes. If you have a motorhome or trailer there is no place to park that is adorable. So they are forced to park on the streets and risked getting ticketed. I got 2 por parking at the trolley because my home takes up 2 spaces. I was there helping a frien that lost her husband and I used the trolley to get to her. I know of 2 homeless men that endeed up in a RV to live in, and got ticketed untill they could not pay the tickets. And ended up losing there RV's. One moved into the car the other to a tent. Then the car got ticketed for sleeping in it, until it got towed away and he ended up on the steets, pooping and sleeping they both lost there jobs because they were not able to be clean, no clothes no bathroom no job. Thank you to California DemoCrap run goverment, look at what they did to San Francisco, LA and San Diego, beautiful citys now full of homeless camps, so sad that people really think that they are helping by giving out food to eat for the day, but nothing to help the poor to be able to feed and care for them selves.

They are hard to set a tax rate on. It's not that they aren't a great idea it's just that municipalities are having hard time figuring out how to make money off them. I'm stuck in public housing and it sucks. The monthly value/rent for one of these units is $1,400 a month i pay $300 the government pays the rest. Tiny homes would be much healthier places to live at half the cost or less. People need to speak up about how their tax dollars are being wasted on public housing. Public housing is just warehousing people. Tiny homes are what's needed at a fraction of the cost.

Some people just overall believe that homeless people intentionally made themselves homeless and that they're lazy, drug addicted, alcoholics or mentally ill. Many people do not bother to see them as human who've had some very unfortunate things happen to them and so they don't care to have any part in helping the homeless get into places like those shown in the video. This is most beautiful thing I’ve seen by far. Like one gentleman said, there’s a bond created when home owners are required to put in time(minimum of 50hrs) and make the home their own having input creating it. All rent is below $400 which most people can afford especially the elderly, most importantly it keeps homeless folks off the streets. And it’s a second opportunity for the residents. The co-op membership thing is another great idea. You see folks, HOMELESS FOLKS ARE HUMANS JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND ONLY NEED SOME LITTLE HELP TO FIND THEIR WAY.

As nice as this is we have to ask about the more core issues. Why are they in this situation to begin with? Can this base symptom be treated? Is this actually the best option for them or is it possible it will harm their mindsets in the future? These are real questions that while not glamorous or easy to swallow need to ne asked. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life. That is the principle I was raised by and I whole heartedly believe in it. Hard work is the one and only way to be self reliant as an honest person. I simply worry that this is just a way for the people who made it to feel good and virtue signal without having actually made significant enough changes in these peoples lives to help them become self sufficient. And to be honest 50 hours of work, even on housing as small as this is chump change in the long run. These houses likely took over 4-5 thousand houses from multiple people to build.

Being born into poverty and barely managing to keep my head just above poverty my own entire life, I am very fortunate. It's been pure luck that I had a career I could do from home during Coronavirus even though I am underpaid for my skill. So much of it was young able bodied people putting a house on their parents land, and then making their money on UKposts. That is what gives this project so much dignity; it allows these people to regain self-respect and purpose after their homeless experience. It lifts people out of depression and gets them excited about doing something to help themselves. It wouldn't be the same if homes were just "made available" to everyone.

Debbie Potter. Can you and some friends afford to buy 2 acres of land if you pool money? You may fit 10 to 20 such 150 sq foot cottages on 2 acres. Such a tight collective could fund that endeavor with corporate dues (rents) of $400 a month with a $1000 buy in. Even power, septic and water could be delivered self sustained in the right location. A simple ($8k 10 kw) solar or wind or solar generator could support 10) 200 sq foot homes as easily as a 2000 sq foot suburban residence. Some communities would fight you, but many unincorporated areas would not. Worth the research. When a group of Iowans decided to do this in 1894 they went all the way to the undeveloped side of Mobile Bay in Alabama to buy the land.

There needs to be a lot more tiny house villages like this, allover the whole world. They need to be very efficient and clever, and provide storage spaces in clever ways, for all the little things a person needs for their daily living. Kind of like a camper, but permanent and better. I think everyone of these should have a raised bed outside, the length matching the length of the house and 3 feet deep. Seperate from the house, but next to it. So residents can grow things like lettuce and carrots and flowers. Makes it more fun, and adds to the home feeling. A small tree, like a dwarf fruit tree. Pear trees don't seem to ever need pesticides. All this adds to the value of a tiny house.

Sadly there are cities that see homeless people as rats. A plague that makes their city look bad and by "supporting" them in any way brings down property values to their homes. THAT PISSES ME OFF. Pardon my anger and language. I moved from a bigger city after my Mom and Dad passed away. My "friend" screwed me over and blew our rent on drugs and got us evicted. He moved back home with his mom while I had no where to go. I lived in a motel for a while. They had "cheap" weekly rates. Not so cheap. I couldn't save any money. I ended up in a shelter. I was treated as a person, NOT a vermin. They found me a transitional place, and I was only there a few weeks. Yes there were some who had been there longer. BUT it is NOT for me to judge anyone. I WASN'T judged. I never believed in stereotypes, and I still believe a man or woman DEFINES who he or she is. NOT by how they look, their race, or their financial background. My point is as some of you have said is EVERYONE DESERVES another chance at a life. When we give up on each other then what? As human beings we are SUPPOSED to have the capacity to be able to care, to help people. Lately all I've seen is killing and BRUTALITY. We need to be better than that. These people are trying to help. It takes MORE ENERGY AND EFFORT to fight and argue than it does to shake someone's hand and introduce yourself. Just sayin.

It really is! We wish we could go more often than once a decade! (Im kind of joking , but we do live in California).
