It feels like the tennis world was waiting for someone like Emma Raducanu. The older players should appreciate having the opportunity to face such an incredible talent that I am sure reminds each and everyone of them of what inspired them to also play and compete. I am sure it is not about how many racquets they smash when things go wrong but it is about the eternal feeling that comes with winning and the strong connection between the crowds and the player at the very split second of winning the match. That feel lives forever. This young lady has the right attitude and trains very hard to create and experience these unique timeless moments. Such an inspiration to all loving this sport!

Now Emma totally showed it to the female stage and world audience, including her natural and ...romantic, smooth... landing on the ground, after the last point. All in spite of the Covid oandemic. You couldn’t be more wrong. Jennifer Capriati was THE MOST MARKETABLE tennis player EVER. . . You likely weren’t around. She was huge. She was on the cover of Newsweek Magazine as a 13-year old!!!! She was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 13-year old!! She made $6 Million in 1990 as a 14-year old! She had looks, personality, charisma and was the BEST YOUNG TENNIS PLAYER EVER. She won the Olympic Gold Medal at 16. She got sidetracked, made some mistakes. But no one was as marketable as the 13-year old Jennifer Capriati. She and Monica Seles could have broken all the records. But, things happen. Still had a great Hall of Fame career.

So covid, her education and inactivity was primarily the reason for her ranking. She did play in some 'Battle of the Brits' exhibition matches and you could clearly see that she was WAY better than 150 in the world. If she'd have been playing all year she'd have been in the top 100. Her play at Wimbledon was significantly above her ranking then (300 and something) or 150. Her smile and her style in that now iconic red blue and yellow outfit - oh - and that plaster on the knee, was always going to make her stand out, but then and above all else that skill, the determination, the game plan, the sportsmanship, the sheer fun she brings and the class have made her a star, but the way she did it, the outsider, the grit, the towering and momentous way she did it, will go down in history and will likely never be repeated. And beyond, she seems so unaffected, so self assured and she walks into the Met Gala like she owned the place. There simply are no words.

After Emma’s wonderful success in New York, as a fellow Brit I really hope she is given time to develop and grow as a player without a stack of media pressure being put on her. Emma has incredible talent and no weaknesses in her game, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to win every single time she plays and she’s sensible enough to know that. What I would hate to see is Emma being put down in the papers if she decides to go to Indian Wells in October and loses early, or if she loses early in Australia next year. Emma has such great potential for a great career, but I think we have to support her sensibly. She’s played just 4 senior level tournaments in her young career, two of them were Grand Slams, Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round and the US Open, which, obviously, she won, but let’s not assume she’s going to win every match she plays just yet and then complain if she doesn’t. I hope we will all give her the time and space she will need to get used to life on the WTA tour, because if we give her time and space now, I have no doubt she will have every chance of reaching her potential.

Yes, that and the appropriate moment-to-moment sound decision making. She wasn't necessary better or even more proficient than Fernandes, both teens being only 18 and 19, with endless energy & determination. But you could see she made more correct decisions, when she went for the ball. In a few crucial points, for example, rather than (easily) hitting the ball into a wide open field (where Fernandes was rushing to get back to for coverage, after being pushed to the extreme corner by Emma), Emma returned the ball right back to the same spot (like a self-assured, highly experienced veteran would)... that meant no matter physically close by Fernades still was, her momentum had already taken her in the opposite direction, so she couldn't do any thing about that relatively easy ball returned by Emma. Defensively, she's also daring enough to psy Fernandes out, so she could force the latter to return an easy ball to the direction for which she, Emma, was ready. Look at the 10:30 minute mark: Emma returned a ball, just over the net, to Fernandes (that's because Fernandes initial ball was so fast, down the center, Emma barely had time to react to it... so getting it back was a miracle in itself.... but instead of telegraphing her intentions, she waited until the last nano-second. THAT psychology forced Fernandes to return that easy ball (swinging it at full force) to Emma's right; but that's the direction Emma was planning to cover, in reality... so fast as Fernandes ball was, Emma had enough initial momentum to get to it & returned the ball, straight down her right flank, onto Fernandes left (which is her dominant side); but that kind of quick-twitched return, there's nothing Fernandes could do about it. (A fast ball can be returned even faster, if you don't let the ball bounce too high.) The other factor, Emma herself noted: she's not sure when she'd get a chance to play as THE center of attention again at Ash Stadium, so she took her chances and played aggressively, enjoying every ball she hit. Aggressive offensively, lack of unforced errors, playing for the moment, correct decision making & quick witted.... those are the intangibles that allowed Emma to beat 10 people, much more experienced than she, without dropping a single set herself!
