As someone who grew up Jewish in Arizona, I’ve always been fascinated by the Hasidic Jews of Brooklyn, New York. They are widely considered to be America’s most religious and closed-off community, even more than the Amish of Pennsylvania. In this 47-minute documentary, I embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of the Hasidics behind closed doors, and discover what makes their lifestyles so incredibly unique.
Guided in the beginning by my friend Abby Stein, a former Hasidic rabbi who is now a transgender author, I gain a fascinating insight into Hasidic life and customs from her perspective - both the good and the bad.
In our climax scene, I meet with @ShloimeZionce, a fellow traveler and UKpostsr, who opens the doors to his home so I could document a traditional Shabbat dinner with his family. With the permission of a rabbi, we capture the essence of this essential weekly ritual and the warmth and hospitality of the Hasidic people. You can follow Shloime's adventures on his channel: / shloimezionce
This story is really fascinating and I'm really proud of how it came out. From the traditional clothing, music, and food to the strict gender roles and controversies surrounding the community, this documentary dives deep into every aspect of Hasidic life with a balanced portrayal of the good and the bad.
Join me on this captivating journey to experience the Hasidic Jews of Brooklyn, New York, like never seen before.

My only concern is closed religious (doesn't actually have to be religious) communities like this sometimes become breeding grounds for really scuzzy stuff. Victims can't really escape their community without leaving all they've known behind. And victimizers are often given protection due to their status in the community.

This was a very challenging story to tell, given all of the tension and controversy, but I felt that I did the best of my ability to tell a well-rounded story, highlighting both the positives and the negatives in the community. One note about the North Korean internet comparison - I do regret keeping that part in because it is not true, and I got carried away. Thank you to those who have pointed it out. My team and I worked for 6 months to get this video edited and ready to post, and I am really proud of how it came out. Huge thanks to Abby Stein, Shloime Zionce, Beri Weber and the others who gave me their time to explain life in their community. @@eggmon420 *Indeed. Jews or other religious people do NOT have a monopoly on this matter. I, for example, am an atheist. But, I still cherish my SECULAR family, spend time with them often, visit my mother (father is dead) at least once or twice a week, and for sure stay away from my cell phone often on a weekly basis when I am by myself and desire serious quiet time. I'm generation X, btw. My generation (people in their mid 40s through mid 50's) grew up without cell phones as kids. In any case, I also turn off the phone altogether when I am having dinner or lunch with family members in my house, their house(s), a restaurant, or if I'm with close friends enjoying their company. In sum -- if you have inner discipline, if you know how to live LIFE without all the nuisance and modern conveniences, if you treat fellow humans with respect and kindness -- you will be alright WITHOUT RELIGION.*

Let it be known to all: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! I tell ye, truly, Jesus of Nazareth is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. He is the anointed one, for he is, Jesus Christ. God the Father has raised him from the dead; who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God! Angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by him. They who believe and are baptized with the Holy Spirit shall be saved; but they who believe not shall be damned. For they who believe not on him, shall die in their sins! I tell ye now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." 1 John 2:2 KJV 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. Acts 13:26-33 KJV 26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, *and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.* 27 *For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.* 28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. 29 *And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.* 30 *But God raised him from the dead:* 31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. 32 *And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,* 33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 1 Peter 3:22 KJV 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. John 14:6 KJV 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Mark 16:16 KJV 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. John 8:24 KJV 24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.*

I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family, a rabbi’s daughter and also exposed to Chassidic Judaism and personally drawn to it. The passionate zeal, beauty and holiness in the traditional Torah centered Chasidic way of life is so unique. I went to Beis Yaakov summer camp for girls and was blessed to go to yeshivot and even study and live in the dormitory at the women’s branch of Yeshiva University with other Rabbi’s daughters. I left that fold at age 21 to experience regular American life, many people and cultures and other religions. As for a holy and spiritual daily life, I don’t think anything else compares to Chasidic Judaism and that community life. I left it, but thankfully, it never has never left me. True love and beauty, holiness and kindness- are everlasting. I’m so grateful it’s still in me. This video is precious and yet I feel that you have to have experienced it to really take it in. I think the only belief that can save humanity, is to love our world, nature and each other. Any belief system that separates one human from another, especially with violence, Is a zero-sum game. Why would God wish death or war OR SEGREGATION by his word? If God created this amazing planet and everything on this planet? Why would God want us to destroy each other or any part of it's beauty? Orthodoxy is cozy...you feel safe having the "right" belief. But to be "right" about what God wants means that another person hast to be "wrong" about what god wants. This is what is often referred to as Zero-sum game. There is the earth and it's flora and fauna. We may be the "keepers" of the earth....as CHOSEN by God? If we are.....don't we have to STOP making war? Look at all the wars through the millennia......isn't it time to make the final law? The law against WAR SO that we can move forward in peace? Didn't God create Physics if God created the World? So then......God=Science=Math=Physics? God=Truth=Math=Science=Physics=Law....etc...AND ETC. God doesn't seem so complicated to me.....God=Truth=Geometry=Math...... Anyway you get my drift. I recommend all ltra Orthodox religions look at the fossil record That humans have unearthed, and found falling out of eroded rock. Pliosaur......it's not in the Torah. But it should be.

I’m a Muslim Imam, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this eye opening video by Drew. I gained additional insights into the various religious aspects of the diverse Jewish culture in the USA. Knowledge of all “hue-mankind” and all global religious traditions is essentially powerful and useful.It’s very important to me in by overall world views of various ethnicities and their religious understandings, which may be different from my deeply held orthodox Islamic beliefs. Drew deserves credit for displaying his religious faith for one and all to see. Much respect, again, is offered by me in taking the time to objectively watch this video. I gained much more valuable insight into Jewish culture and religious observances. Respectfully, Imam Al-Hajj Hakim Abdul-Ali.

I am a secular Jewish woman and I used to work with kids who had special needs. I worked with a Hassidic little girl in her home. The mom was very sweet, but her life was rough-not what I would call beautiful. She was 24, had 5 kids and ran herself ragged fulfilling all the strictures. Did anyone notice many families in which the girls were wearing same dress in different sizes? The moms made those clothes themselves. Not only did meat and dairy meals need to be eaten separately, this woman had to keep separate sets of china/cookware, wash them in separate dishwasher cycles AND run the dishwasher empty in between. She was not allowed to touch or even be alone in a room with any man but her husband. There was not much respect for her in that family..

There isn't much respect for women in that religion and in many other religions. That is why I find many religions hypocritical. They want to praise God but treat women like 3rd class citizens which really isn't a thing anymore but you get where I'm coming from. I'm a catholic and I use to go to church regularly and would take part in church activities when I was younger but when the head priest tried to molest me. I stopped being involved with the church. I still believe in God but I do it my way. I've always asked why the most religious groups and countries are pretty much the most violent and always killing one another. Be it known: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!

How can anyone not love Shloime? I appreciate how he and his family have stepped out of the strict mold to share with joy so much information about this insular community for the world to see the most beautiful side of Hasidic culture. I’m sure this is a difficult path, but so important to educating the world. To me, this is a labor of love of which Hashem approve. Thank you and especially to Shloime for finding a Halachic way to share their special ways and your Shabbos experience. Yasher koach!

I grew up conservative Jewish and it doesn't cut it for me... The families have high divorce rates. They talk about politics and the state of Israel at Temple, a house of worship not political debate, and the families in conservative Jewish community move away from each another for career opportunities. Orthodox Jewish people work with their hands, play instruments, don't get divorced and don't move away from family. Also they protest against the conflict with Palestine and avoid getting drafted. I wish to be part of an Orthodox Jewish community one day

As a Christian-raised atheist I also feel envious of Shabbat dinners. Here in Germany we at least preserve a tiny little bit of this kind of spirit by keeping almost all shops closed on Sundays and most people not working on Sundays. And I am very glad we do.

Hi, I am a secular Jew from Israel. Thank you for this video. I feel although you were accompanied by Abbie, there was not enough presentation of women's opinions and perspectives, and it is not incidental. Also, the downsides of being such a closed community were not discussed. It was mentioned but so briefly it looks almost ideal. It is far from the truth for many people, especially women.
@7jandi7
@7jandi7 11 місяців тому
Abby's not a women it's a trans who grew up a Male in that society when Abby chose to live as trans Abby left so Abby wouldn't know... had he spoke to a biological woman who grew up as a woman that would be far more accurate. Remember "Abby" can chose to be Abe later in life we can not.
@johaquila
@johaquila 11 місяців тому
I guess it's not so easy to get the women's side on tape, especially for a man. In case you missed it, Peter Santenello made an entire series of videos on the Hasidic community of New York 2 years ago, also featuring Shloime Zionce. In one episode he interviews a Hasidic woman, and another is about a Rabbi who gives marriage advice. I think even that series doesn't completely address what you are asking for, but it does contain some relevant information from a sympathetic point of view. For the negative points and how things just don't work for some women, there is information volunteered by women who left the Hasidic community. Add to this the totally unusual and surprising perspective of Sara Braun in her book "That Black Hasidic Lady" and several interviews she appeared in recently, and you get what I guess should be a pretty accurate picture of a multi-faceted community, even if some details may be missing.

@@7jandi7 Abbie never claimed to know first hand what being raised as a woman was like. She’s not supposed to provide that perspective. It’s not that it’s inaccurate. It’s just a different perspective. And you could choose to be Abe any time you want. We’ve got stuff for that now and it works miracles.

@@ratking927 why chose him out of all the community to give a tour? I'm not sure of the point of having him do the tour except to passive aggressively disrespect the community's connection to the religion and foundational beliefs. If the objective is to share "that community" with the public it's far more representative to Close a person in the community or someone who shares their commitment to The religious G-D based foundational beliefs.
