Everything you need to know about the Russian Revolution in 13 minutes.
This video covers all the major events of Russia's TWO revolutions of 1917- the February Revolution that ended Tsarist rule in Russia, and the October Revolution, that brought the Bolsheviks to power. We explain the causes of Tsar Nicholas II's growing unpopularity - the role of the mysterious Siberian mystic Rasputin, Russia's disastrous involvement in World War One, and the events on the streets of Petrograd that led to the Tsar's abdication. That summer Russia lurched from crisis to crisis, with a Provisional Government that faced riots (the July Days), military revolt (the Kornilov Affair), economic chaos, and constantly dwindling support. Socialist Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky, once hailed as Russia's great hope, was unable to restore order, or, in October, prevent the Bolsheviks from launching a coup, organised by Leon Trotsky and led by Vladimir Lenin, that overthrew the Provisional Government and brought the Bolsheviks to power. A brutal civil war followed, leading to the death of more than 10 million Russians - amongst them Tsar Nicholas II and his family, executed by Bolsheviks at Yekaterinburg in July 1918. From the wreckage emerged the Soviet Union, formed in 1922, and destined to be one of the 20th century's superpowers.

Hello. This is a re-edited version of a video I first released for the centenary of the Russian Revolution in 2017. Unfortunately UKposts demonetized and age-restricted the original video, probably because of a slightly grim photo of Rasputin after he'd been fished out of the river. This re-edited version omits that photograph, and includes a few small corrections. Please note that all dates in the video are 'Old Style' (OS), meaning they use the Julian Calendar (the one used in Russia at the time, but not in the rest of Europe.) To calculate New Style dates (NS), add 13 days. This video is intended as a very brief overview of the 1917 revolutions. My own major criticism of it six years later, is that the introduction is VERY brief, and fails to mention the fast-paced industrialisation that was going on in Russia (largely thanks to French loans) in the late 19th / early 20th century. You can find out a bit more about that in our History of Russia video ukposts.info/have/v-deo/r2CIoZlvemZ20mQ.html Despite that caveat, I hope you enjoy the video!

Germans wanted Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, Ukraine and Belarus in return for peace. Kerensky being a politician was worried about losing popular support, Lenin on the other hand had no such compulsions.
@alexzero3736
@alexzero3736 Рік тому
Actually you need to learn more about Brest-Litovsk peace talks. Initial demands were just about lands occupied by German army ( Poland, Baltics up to Riga, and part of Belarus), but Trotsky denied this demands, so German army did push deep into Russia and increase demands significantly. Petersburg was in German reach, so Bolsheviks had no choice but to sign any peace treaty. Kerensky on the other hand had Russian army kinda alive, so he could trade a bit.

Dear author; thank you for this video... FYI, "Petrograd Soviet" translates into English as "Petrograd Council" - that is important to know

Toby at 10.09 do you have a source for that quote? I looked all over when I first watched this and no joy. Great job on this. I think it's fair to say that the Russian revolution is the most important moment in history given how it shaped the 20th century and beyond

Not the primary source but it’s common in the secondary sources. Sheila Fitzpatrick’s book may have the primary in the footnotes.. www.poetryfoundation.org/harriet-books/2015/05/akhmatovas-requiem-in-the-age-of-terror

Wow! 1979 revolution in Iran is the carbon copy of Bolshevik revolution, almost the same sequence of events. Amazing!!!
@markkozlowski3674
@markkozlowski3674 2 роки тому
Except for the rather significant difference that the Bolsheviks were attempting to effect triumph of the modernist theory of Marxism while the victors of the Iranian revolution were attempting to effect the triumph of the principles of Islam, a thousand year-old religion.

@@markkozlowski3674 if by modern you mean most recent of course there’s 1300 years of difference but if you mean progressive or advanced, No Marxism is not modern. I meant similarities in sequence of the post revolution events not the ideology.

@@gatorhawk1324 I meant modern in the sense that, with the exception of liberalism, no secular ideology has influenced our contemporary world more than Marxism. Regards.

Yeah, yeah... gliding the surface of the events, focusing on incidental similarities, failing to capture the relevant. Such an approach to historical events always reminds me of that quote from The Lord of the Rings: "A love of learning (other than genealogical lore) was far from general among them..."

I ultimately view the Russian Revolution the same way I do the first French Revolution. The backwards Monarchy needed to go, and even if the Monarch himself might be a somewhat sympathetic character, I'm not gonna shed many tears for him (Though the Royal Family, especially the children, is a different story). On the other hand, even I don't like the new regime, I still support the Revolutionaries over the Reactionaries, because i still believe in the ideals of the Revolution.

@@coimbralaw So, if you had lived in Tsarist Russia as a peasant, would you have simply accepted that your lot in life was to farm your entire life for scraps, and that the Royal Family was able to enjoy their opulent lifestyle while you starved, not through any systemic exploitation, but just because they were your "betters"? Yeah, no, I'd rather move up in life, even if it means feeling the chains I was born into. Thanks for coming straight in with the mask off, though. It's usually harder to coax out anit-Communists' true Classist beliefs.
