Stoicism for Inner Strength (book): einzelganger.co/innerstrength
Losing, to many, is painful; it’s an experience of degradation, a diminishment of the ego. So, can’t we just put ourselves in circumstances where we always win? Or even better: is it possible to win in all circumstances? According to Epictetus, it is. If we adopt the right mindset and attitude, we always win, even when we lose. This video reflects and elaborates on Epictetus' philosophy and why, if you want to lose, you always win.

When I lived as a Buddhist monk this was such a common approach people had to their practice. If they won they got to have some pleasant experience. But if they lost they'd get an unpleasant experience. The ironic thing is that as far as progression goes, both are wins, but the unpleasant meditation sittings are usually the ones that gets you the most progress :)

When you don’t have any expectations, then the smallest things are enough to make you happy. A beautiful ray of sun, a kind stranger, an encounter with a dog. When I got my first job I was struggling with imposter syndrom so bad that when I each shift ended I felt a relief, not a sense of accomplishment. I was always anticipating the worst. So when my clients would post 5* reviews mentioning my name, it was so surprising it always made me feel grateful. And this feeling of gratitude was rewarded by my boas raising the salary. Everyday I was going to work ready to lose, but in fact I was winning😮

Machine learning paradigms dominate Silicon Valley. For startups, the saying is "Fail early. Fail often." It's to get one's sea legs. The goal is to learn the ropes, know all the issues around one. It's learning to "navigate the error surface". This builds breath, resiliency, to deal with a larger set of contingencies. Going directly to success is not necessarily a blessing. Of course, just like a stock trading portfolio, one has to take into account the risks, how much drawdown one can take, probability of success ... It's a very calculated approach, in building a runway, whereby one can move forward, in a systematic way, esp. for things at the cutting edge.

I would rather scope down my attempt to get a winning result. I get enough problem solving in my work, I don't need uncertainty in the rest of me life. I started controlling what I do in life and have found so much contentment where I before felt anxiety and mentally fatigued. By adopting the policy of not engaging in a discussion with someone with a strong opposing opinion I have SAVED SO MUCH ENERGY. This LET THEM BE attitude is so calming. At 77 I am now relaxed and refuse to be triggered. 😊

He might feel strongly about why he's right wing, it may not be he wants to win, but share his thoughts. Is he older than you? Has he lived more experienced more? If so, it may be you who are lacking not him. Being right wing is not a crime, being sanctimonious about your views is. Do you feel you are right and therefore should not waste your time in discussion with him?

@@hunterluxton5976 He is 37. I'm 62. I hold a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology, with a lot of reading on my belt. And I am a retired college instructor. He holds a BA in Poli sci. He is a salesman in a work supply store. He also has guns and loves video games that shoot at things. And he listens to Jordan Peterson. No, it isn't a crime to be right-wing, only that he tries to ram his political ideology down my throat. I am live and let live. I do not shove my beliefs on someone's face and wish the same. Yeah, it is not possible to have a decent conversation with a being such as that. His position is to have his opinions be true theories and that I buy them wholesale. He wants to win at all costs, and if you haven't done so, try having a grown-up conversation and exchanging ideas with a right-wing ignoramus. Good luck with that.

@@joannaedwards6325 You got it! It isn't worth a smidgen of my breath to engage with people who have made up their minds based on hearsay information. And the comment above proves my/our point.

0:00: 🎯 Epictetus teaches that we should not base our happiness on external factors we cannot control, like winning or losing in competitions. 2:56: 🎶 Desiring something outside of our control leads to disappointment and anxiety. 5:51: 💪 Embracing defeat and focusing on what is within our control leads to invincibility. 8:41: 🏆 The embrace of losing and failure can lead to inner victory and growth. 11:58: 🔄 Embracing failure can transform it into something positive and alleviate anxiety. “God, spare me from the desire for love, approval, and appreciation. Amen.” ~Byron Katie. I don't focus on the "God" part or that it's in the form of a type of prayer, but on the desire part. This shifted my thinking when I came across it the other day. Just the way it's phrased really made me get it this time. I didn't realize I was still thinking others needed to prove these things for me in order for me to be OK, acceptable as a human being. It changed my whole thinking.

Epictetus's message in this video resonates with the message in the Indian religious scripture Bhagwat Geeta.According to Bhagwat Geeta ' Action is in our hand but the results are not. Results depend on myriad factors outside our control. If we truly understand this fact, we will work hard but wouldn't be affected by the results not as per our wish.We will start again.

Tadej Pogacar is probably our times best example of a stoic athlete. He never blames outside factors when things dont go his way no matter how unfair things seem. He's truly an example for young generations to follow. and look up to. I dont think he even knows about stoicism. Seems like it's just part of his natural way of being.

After reading Cicero I found something interesting. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose but what matters is our intention. This suggests something other than expecting to lose but rather that actions performed in virtue are worthwhile no matter the outcome.
