That's a bummer. Did you know that at the base of the leaf petiole (the leaf stem) there is a bud waiting in case the leaf petiole and leaf fall off? Pretty cool stuff. So, ya, your tree looks like heck but it will rebound. Too bad you didn't get to enjoy it.

Well, Fireglow, given full sun, should be expected to maintain a bright red colour. I have never grown it in anything shadier but it's known to maintain a red colour. This time of year you see red seedling trees fading in their colour unlike a Bloodgood or Fireglow.

Hello. Personally I am unaware of any that can hold their colour in full shade. There's some kind of connection between sun and the red colour. I can you tell there are some trees that stay red in some filtered light such as Red Cloud or Inaba shidare. But full shade possibly not.

Oh wow, that's awesome! I love Pixie! No special tips. Japanese maples love good drainage, so pay attention to using the proper container mixes (I did a recent video on this), fertilize only once a year in the spring, and make sure Pixie gets ample sun to keep the red colour. Gino, I assume you are making a comparison of the same tree from one point of time to another. A change in sunlight, available food and water are three big reasons why this can happen.

Fertilize in the spring. Prefer organic 4-4-4 or similar. I use Gaia Green or Welcome Harvest Farm but you may have something different available. The key thing is the numbers. Japanese maples are sensitive to over fertilization so the lower numbers are good, and for ecological reasons I choose not to use fertilizer that isn't organic.

The best thing I would suggest is to have a healthy respect for the "mature sizes". And not the size in 10 years. The ten year is for garden planning in the short term but it kind of leaves a blind spot for the long term which people miss. And in the case of Osakazuki, it turns into a fairly big tree over time. Possibly 25' tall and wide. So, assuming it's going to get to be 25' wide, I'd count backwards and imagine the centre of the tree being in the middle of a 25' wide circle. So, you have about 12' or so from the centre out. Only then would I try to figure out how close I can plant another tree. I mean, you can always try to prune to reduce the growth but this can be full on especially with a vigorous tree such as Osakazuki, or Seiryu or a number of the larger uprights. In the short term, the distance between trees looks enormous but in the long term, trees planted too close together really can look bad, too. And now you have trees that are too big to move! Food for thought.

@@SimplyJapaneseMaples Very good advice, maybe it will be best as a container plant in that 7.5ft range. I can always move it around then and plant it at another house one day.

Going back to your original question, at a minimum I think your 7.5 ft distance you were considering planting Beni maiko away from Osakazuki would probably be right on the edge of the Osakazuki within ten years (not sure how big it is now). I can't remember the heights on Beni maiko. Also, you can certainly dig up trees, by hand, for a number of years after planting before it gets too hard. But of course no one wants to be disturbed if it can be helped.

@@SimplyJapaneseMaples From what I've found 8'x5' in 10 years give or take for Beni Maiko. The Osakazuki is about 5-6ft tall and multi trunked.

@@SimplyJapaneseMaples You are definitely correct, I appreciate the really detailed answers. I'll hold off on planting the Beni Maiko and keep it in a container. You gave me food for thought and I actually dug up a Kuro Hime that was about 3ft from the base of a Shishigashira and transplanted to a much for spacious area, still tight though. I think we can get a little maple crazy and plant as many as we can without really understanding the sizes in the end game.
