Episode 32. The Electric Battery: Volta invents the electric battery using the internal properties of different metals.
“The Mechanical Universe,” is a critically-acclaimed series of 52 thirty-minute videos covering the basic topics of an introductory university physics course.
Each program in the series opens and closes with Caltech Professor David Goodstein providing philosophical, historical and often humorous insight into the subject at hand while lecturing to his freshman physics class. The series contains hundreds of computer animation segments, created by Dr. James F. Blinn, as the primary tool of instruction. Dynamic location footage and historical re-creations are also used to stress the fact that science is a human endeavor.
The series was originally produced as a broadcast telecourse in 1985 by Caltech and Intelecom, Inc. with program funding from the Annenberg/CPB Project.
The online version of the series is sponsored by the Information Science and Technology initiative at Caltech. ist.caltech.edu

This whole series of videos is teaching "freshman college level" stuff for its day (and to be honest, it's amazing that after all these years, it does a GREAT job of explaining and teaching it despite some of the data and a few conceptual points being very outdated)... All the same, I've been binging on the whole series and enjoying it, and there's one thing that *kills* me here over and over again: other than the calculus (most of the maths, really) and some of the history, there's been vanishingly little in this or the previous 31 episodes that I didn't already know when I was 8 years old. Other than the maths (as I said... and it's just because that part is so deep and takes so much practice), this is fit for 12to-14-year-olds (or precocious and super-curious 8-to-12-year-olds). Am I a mutant, or is the world's pre-university education really so badly done that more than half of the students who could easily have grasped it at age 12 (conceptually, nevermind the maths until they're ready) still don't know this stuff even after high-school?

I will tell you here and now as a 70 year old from the U.S. my generation and present state of teaching physics, math is deplorable! However even with best of teachers especially physics is not reachable to either high school or undergraduates. Probably barely 2% will understand! I think it's much better in U.K., western Europe and eastmost Asia. Still though you can only squeeze so much water from a rock anywhere meaning the percentages are still the same there.

@Southeastern777: Contrary to popular belief except for top notch mathematicians like Turing, von Neumann, Weiner, etc. who were pioneers in computers in general and in part invented programming low level programmers are not thought highly of by them. There is mainly set theory, logic not calculus or certainly not physics in this field. That's why so many have gone into basically elementary programming in the last 1/2 century. Even one of my high school math teachers who hardly knew calculus left teaching in 1968 for programming. Except for top notch geniuses at major universities the age of computers, mobile phones that is Bill Gates, Steve Jobs(who knew nothing) and the jobs with them is over! Every superior mathematician knows there is basically one best program and all others are unnecessary since they are different forms of this original. Those other programs just create superfluous jobs.

Math, not "maths".

@@jessrevill1852: I'm also from the U.S. and of course we say and write math not maths as the English(Brits) do. I hate saying maths!

I like the British, but when they say "maths" it sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. If I'm watching a video where someone says it, I'll just turn it off right then, it's not worth it.

The sound is off by 17 seconds or so as the music starts at the very beginning and should start when it gets to the colorful scenery. Who can fix this? It is unusable as is. Otherwise would be wonderful to have these here.

This is so annoying. Whoever put the Annenberg Media logo at the front of these videos really made a mistake. It throws the whole audio off the video. I have watched these lectures more than once, so I know there was not always this Annenberg Media introduction. Can someone please put it back to what it was?
