As a truck driver and an amateur geologist, I have traveled up and down that route many a time. that is one of the things that occupied my mind as I passed by these geological events. The writing is literally on the walls of the cutaway for the highway. They Show such an interesting story I've always been fascinated by these cataclysmic Events that carved the land that we live on! Thank you so much for sharing this. Please continue To teach us😊

It's GREAT for me to read that you're a "truck driver and amateur geologist." My dad was exactly the same... truck driver and geology enthusiast (he also loved astronomy). He'd be in the truck on long hauls listening to audio books by Carl Sagan, Stephen Gould, Darwin, etc. I think you two would have been fast friends.

@rcj4046 you just listed half of my dad's library and career/ interests I'd honestly love to have been at a table with those two minds at it 😁 I'll bet your dad also had some interest in meteorology as well(sorta goes hand in hand with trucking 🚚) wish my dad could have met him 😇

Jefferson Oregon. I’ve been watching for over two years. Quite enjoyable. The glacial floods stories keep bringing me back to live in fantasyland. I was a heavy equipment operator for most of my career. I’ve spent my life inspecting the different layers of residue from those floods. I’ve worked with soils engineers on different jobs. It was like a college education…though I have none. Through Tualitin Valley silts to the basalts along the Clearwater River in Idaho I’ve observed the story of our violent earth. WHAT A STORY!

Nick, I'm an old timer originally from Upstate NY and I fell in love with geology attending a great old teacher from Maine named Ralph Robinson. He'd spin stories like yours to show us the marvels of how the earth changes over time. We'd go on field trips in Orange County, NY and see some really cool glaciation and rock formation. Man, that was an awesome class. Anyway, wanted to say thank you for bringing the Missoula Floods story to life. I was particularly staggered by the speed of what happened when that ice dam broke. Holy moly, that'd been awesome to see and hear (from your friend's hang-glider of course as I think it would have been an instant karma event!) Gracias.

Two Comments: 1. Loess hills were planted in wheat even before motorized combines could handle the steep slopes. My father was one of several wranglers who manned 24 horse combines. 2. Early geologic guides started in the 1950’s when Bretz’s booklets were available at Dry Falls. We would make tours of channelized scab lands. My dad was a farmer and mechanic, but we drove in our 1956 Plymouth station wagon to follow Bretz’s maps and descriptions. Cheers, looking forward to hearing when the Moses Coulee formed, if not less than 25K years ago. From: Battery Fully Charged.

For anyone who isn't aware, driving 2 horses in tandem is an art. It's not nearly as easy as it looks. Keeping 4 horses all together and pulling in the same direction is a sincere feat. 6 in hand is exponentially more difficult, and it only gets mote challenging and dangerous from there. Driving 24 horses (4 abreast, 12 deep) on the side of a hill is absolutely superhuman!

I like the lava rhino cast in the coulee just below the Falls and splash lakes... hearing the whistle of a bird"s wings as they circle down into the amphitheater to land in the splash lake. They did submarine crew training in that glacial lake near Sand Point in N. Idaho because it is so deep so close to land... I picked up a fine chunk of white erratic granite on a pond building project in the middle of the Willamette. It wasn't as big as the Willamette meteorite though...

What a wild place we live in.

As far as what I'm hoping to learn: I am a total geology novice and am just looking forward to being open minded and learni g what ever the train brings my way. I am an Electrician turned Electrical Enhineer and worked at Lower Granite Dam for a few years. I lived and hunted in Palouse and worked in the canyon and was always intrigued at the land formations. I am now in Denver Colorado and teach substation electrician apprentices. I am always excited when I learn new things in my field from my apprentices, whether it is a new way to teach something or just new information about my field. I love that you are also looking forward to exploring and discovering new things.

There's truly nothing wrong with "popular geology," nor is there anything wrong with "scientific / academic geology." I taught history for 30 years, have zero geological training, and never got an advanced degree (life kept getting in the way). There's "popular history," and there's "academic history." Both have something to say, and not always to the same audience. I sometimes enjoy both. Introduced to the whole topic by Zentner videos during the pandemic, since - as a certified old person with extra risk factors - I was spending a lot of time at home. Daytime TV was awful, so I ended up skipping around on UKposts, and there was Geology 101, etc., etc.

You don't necessarily need a degreed person to pass on information to the next generations. You do need people who are curious and energetic to go out and look up what others have passed down, and look critically at that information. You have been fortunate to have found several people whose curiosity has led them to see if what they have read about is real and how real. They also wanted to spread that information to others. Keep up the great works, your easy to listen to.

A and B are the first two letters of ABout a very good place to begin. Your first book is by Allen and burns (not Burns and Allen). "Just a popularizer", just? That you are doing it implies there's a need not being filled by academics. For people doing research at state funded universities not sharing what they learning is missing the point of public universities. Maybe they're dismissive towards you because they are uncomfortable with you for filling a need that they aren't.

I'm from Florence Alabama. Home of the University of North Alabama, the oldest public university in Alabama, and was the first all teachers college south of the Ohio river. I've watched several of your lessons where you teach from the auditorium of Central Washington. I got into geology when I made my first trip to Walker County Alabama, where there once was a shallow ocean, and I believe it's one of the few sites that has as many fossil tracks by prehistoric animals. But the fossils didn't intrigue me, it was the landscapes I saw when we drove through the roughly 800' - 1000' high foothills. And where the highways were cut through the hills, where below the top soil, it was solid rock, or chunks of solid rock. And I've always been a geography junkie, map lover, state capital knower, and taught myself how to draw the entire north American continent, then the entire planet lol (It's not exactly like it, but it's enough to know what's what lol. And I've always been fascinated with the beauty of the Pacific northwest, the Rocky Mts, The Great Basin, Death Valley, The Cascades, all of those places. I seen the Missoula flood story back a few years ago. And it blew my mind to see how that all occurred. Even the Bonneville flood, the Scablands, and the ripples in Camos Prairie (I apologize if I misspelled the name of the place) Anyway, I've rambled long enough. Thanks for the upload!

I love it. Another A-Z. It's always weird watching stuff from the American Winter when in South Australia it's nearly 40 Degrees (Celsius) outside... Already in November. Global warming stinks. Great recap. I've seen the lectures before and some of the stuff from April. Looking forward to the discussion. I really like the way Mr Zentner presents these series. It makes it clearer to lay people how the process in the Sciences work. There is ideas, backed up with good evidence from more than one point of view. The consensus between the majority is usually presented as an end result. But there are a lot of grey areas to cover and differing points of view. For those who poo-poo the 'popular geology' in the world of Academia- -this is where the future is born. I predict that there will be several future PhDs that comes from these series world wide. -some of the best people in the world in their area of expertise are self-taught.

Love your work. My uncle lives just north of Wenatchee. I have visited Washington twice, taking the three passes through the Cascades, visited Chelan Butte Lockout, and many more. We hiked around hide lake, in the old growth forest, and the scab lands of many coulees. Talking with my uncle he told me stories of floods and giant rocks from Canada. That was nearly 20 yrs ago… now this series have added so much context to my miles of car journeys and hiking with hours of stories and great “lectures”. He is a teacher as well, a biologist. I listened to Randall Carlson and wasn’t sure of his story. But I believe this new story is the most accurate. I have three of the books you mentioned at the beginning. My background is in mechanical engineering, MSME and I specialize in building science. But now I am enjoying the geologic journey you are taking me down once again bringing up memories past. Please continue the conversation. All the best.

Thanks Nick, I lived in Portland, Oregon area for 10 years back in the late '70's and 80's. I was living there when Mt. St. Helens erupted and learned about the power of volcanic eruptions. I moved away in the mid 1980's but I continue to return to Oregon for vacation most every year for the last 40 years. I have driven thru the Columbia Gorge many times and visited my uncle who lived in Wenatchee. I was always curious about the erratics and scarred basalt walls along the Columbia and Snake Rivers. I have driven through the pass from Lewiston, Idaho to Missoula, Montana and observed those ledges along the face of the mountains. The ice age floods are a fascinating story that I read about years ago but look forward to learning more about. I found your website and UKposts videos a several years ago and have become an avid geology fan ever since. Keep on making these great videos that are educational and entertaining.

I, as one, have enjoyed your lectures immensely. I have read almost all of the comments of your lectures and I can't help but agree with with everything that everyone has to say about your teaching style. You are are the most phenomenal teacher I've ever run into....bar-none. Michael said that, bye for now my friend. (And I'm 80 years old and met a lot of teachers for sure.)

Cataclysms on the Columbia may be the book that sparked general interest in Northwest geology and the Missoula floods, but for popular geology on a national scale, John McPhee slightly predates it. His Annals of the Former World series runs: Basin and Range, 1982 In Suspect Terrain, 1982/3 Rising from the Plains, 1986 Assembling California, 1993 McPhee could make an interesting story about almost anything. I wish he'd turned north once he made it to California on I-80.

Magnificent presentation, Professor Zentner. Pray continue your educational outreach. I don't know if I'd have paid any attention to the geology you present if I hadn't lived in Pullman, WA in the 1980's, where I was busy demonstrating the absence of any academic aptitude on my part. But I saw (and didn't appreciate) many of the features that you show so effectively. Thank you.

We live in the foothills of the coast range west of McMinnville Oregon. Hopefully there will be some discussion about the Willamette Valley part of the floods. My understanding is that our great soil here is largely loess. We are near one of the glacial erratics. Standing next to it, looking out over the expanse of the valley below it is awe inspiring to think that there had been floods to that elevation reaching all the way to Eugene. Someday I would love to learn about the geological timeline where our home is at 1100f elevation. We have lots of various sized basalt cobbles. Back in the late '80's my wife and I were flying from Portland to Spokane in a small 16 passenger plane. Looking out the window somewhere over eastern Washington I noticed giant ripples below us - like in sand at the beach. I commented to my wife that there must have been a massive flood in the area in the distant past. Years later I discovered 'Nick on the Rocks' on OPB and have been a fan ever since. Thank you Nick for having awakened my interest in Geology.

Thank you so much for putting all this information out there. I have loved geology since I was a kid. At age 53, I still enjoy it. I was unable to go to college. You have no idea what this means to a person like me. ❤❤

Thank you, Nick! I’m watching because 1. Learn new/more and further clarify all those places where the floods flowed and about this extremely fascinating chapter in My Northwest. 2. Will enjoy the review info, too. 3. Your teachings always make me happy!! I’m envious of those fortunate students attending Geology etc. at your University.
