I have a v39. Berthing is 7.5k not 15k (south coast premier marina). Fuel is about £3k (60 hours) insurance is £800 not £2-3k. Servicing averages out about £2k. Other maintenance another £2k. I reckon your figures are about 25-30% over the top - other than that you are spot on. it’s a fantastic family boat - had ours for six years which is the longest we’ve kept a boat. And yes if we sold it we’d make some money. But we’d have a big problem finding a better replacement for the money. And yes the roof mechanism has required attention twice in the six years!

We have a 2015 V39, and haven't have an issue with our roof system except a loose cir clip which was fixed easily. The manufacturers in South Wales sent us full drawings of the system, so very easy to put right. But i agree with you a fab mid range vessel. So much space in a boat of that size and a fabulous sea boat. We've covered south coast from Fowey, St Catherine's Dock up the Thames and the Channel Islands. Well used this season. For anyone looking for a 40 footer, newish boat they really should check them out. Not sure on your yellow tipped socks though !!

I think with boating you've got to be in one of 2 camps. Oodles of money for "the yard to do it" or oodles of experience and be able to do it yourself. But one thing is for sure; you must be one of those no matter what size the boat is.

Sounds like cable stretch coupled with insufficient pin diameter and / or lack of tensioner adjustment to compensate. fix is simple, a mixture from; thicker or stronger cables (or prestretch), redesign pulleys, upgrade tensioner system. Should be a simple matter for a competent manufacturer. A 2012 vessel still has the problem? hmm, I think I'd find that lack of Kaizen somewhat worrying.
@cookiemonster2299
@cookiemonster2299 2 роки тому
@@macbouncer8525 is it a cable and pulley system and the issue is the cable jumping of the pulley? I haven't seen the system and am just trying to visualise it. 👍
@macbouncer8525
@macbouncer8525 2 роки тому
@@cookiemonster2299 at 4.20 he says "the cables keep jumping off the spools" so I'm assuming yes 😃. As an aside, I did think that the wire rope he held up looked more suitable for photocopiers than roof awnings. I've got thicker wire ropes than that on my trellis! One of the cheapest ways to do it might be to have the two rotating 'spools' fixed to the hull at each side, then the awning fixed to the cable (clamped?) a few turns of cable around the the motorised spools, a few limit switches in line to the motor and thats about it. That specific approach could cause several issues, synchronisation of both sides being one of them. Getting both sides to close completely and at the same time. its very possible that if one closes slightly before the other (even if off by only 1 or 2 mm) then the first side to close, that cable will be in tension, repeat that too many times and it would easily cause structural stretching of the cable over time. Unless there is a mechanism to compensate for the stretching, it will gain enough 'slack' to jump off the spool. I should add that I have no insight into the design of the system other than applying the guiding heuristic of Occam's razor to what we've seen, been told and the fact that it keeps happening. 🤓

Another entertaining review as always James…..but on the running costs I would say you underplayed the annual maintenance costs by a long way…..our 2011 V45 is somewhat similar but with slightly larger D6 engines and we are averaging between 10-15k per year on maintenance. Probably c7-8k on simply servicing the engines, drives and a hull lift clean/polish/antifoul and the rest in stuff that has to be replaced periodically (batteries, float switches, pumps, hoses etc). And heaven forbid anything goes wrong with the Volvo stuff as those swedes know how to charge!!! Especially on all the electronic stuff😱😱 You are right about the roof mechanism……and they are not cheap to fix either.

Such a chuffing nice package. My plan if I can ever afford it would be, V39 to start -- 49/F50 to move up to. I did my school work experience at Marine Projects in Plymouth in the 90s and had a nice time. Spent some time wrapping wiring with insulation tape, some sanding of foam from memory, then went out on a big monster Princess Yacht in the sound for some sea trials, that vessel felt so classy and hewn from granite, shame I don't know which model it was now, that experience sowed a seed.
@timk3939
@timk3939 Рік тому
Both fast boats for the size too, the 49 (F50) can do about 36 knots, cruise above 30, as can the V39/V40. With IPS or DPH drive I believe the economy stays flat with increasing speed on a lot of boats, so even though the fuel burn in litre per miles goes up, it goes up a similar amount in line with the speed, some IPS boats get their best planing economy at over 25 knots. James you should find a way to put the boats into mpg mode rather than lph for your reviews, as if the speed rises more than the extra fuel burnt a boat can be more efficient at higher speed = better mpg. You get there quicker so the extra litre per hour doesn't always mean higher fuel burnt overall, such as with some of these boats that get best planing efficiency at high speed. Economy on shaft driven boats just tends to get worse at higher speeds (say going from 15-30 knots), and not stay flat or improve as some non shaft ones do. Like for this boat it gets better economy (and range) at 28 knots than 13 knots, an IPS 600 boat: www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fboattest.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Finline-images%2Fformula45_volvopenta435d.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fboattest.com%2Fview-news%2F3438_new-volvo-penta-ips-for-bigger-boats&tbnid=r04GeUEmECT5NM&vet=12ahUKEwjjz_7Xo8f5AhURaRoKHbAvCrsQMygAegUIARCFAQ..i&docid=zH6kaI_nz8gpOM&w=494&h=320&q=ips%20economy%20vs%20speed%20boats%20mpg%20volvo&ved=2ahUKEwjjz_7Xo8f5AhURaRoKHbAvCrsQMygAegUIARCFAQ (0.88 mpg vs 0.76 mpg) Even the shaft boat in that article gets better economy at 28 knots compared to 12 knots, I suspect that that it's due to the engines being more efficient at high load (but not flat out) and less drag as the boat lifts out of the water more as it planes faster = less drag. But IPS is about 50% more efficient at high speed, 0.9mpg vs. 0.6mpg, so while a shaft boat might cost $1500 to fuel for a trip, the IPS one would cost £1000, but both cheaper at a faster plane than a slow one as the mpg is higher. According to this the V39 get similar or better economy at 38 knots vs. 31 knots, that is amazing: www.vikingsportcruisers.com/mainnew/newsDetails.asp?numIdVal=49 Divide litres per hour by speed to get the real comparison for fuel economy. I'm an engineer BTW so this type of stuff floats my boat :) to some extent. It's sad I know but a guilty pleasure thinking about these things.
