Katanga is a bustling district of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city. Here, many locals dream of making it big in the capital. One is Enkehone, a street vendor from the countryside, who lives in Amele Mamo's makeshift hostel. But perhaps not for long: the lively, inexpensive neighborhood has been discovered by real estate speculators.
Amele Mamo is a warm-hearted hostess who lives with her family in the back of her hostel. She rents beds to a wide variety of people. Young day laborers, mothers with children and anyone who needs a bed and a hot meal for a small price. Katanga is one of the last historical neighborhoods in the heart of Addis Ababa. But multi-story concrete blocks are closing in on all sides, threatening the neighborhood's colorful hustle and bustle. One of the long-term guests in Amele's accommodation is the young street vendor Enkehone, who left his mother in Gondar to seek his fortune in Addis Ababa. The camera accompanies him as he tries to work his way out of poverty. But during a police raid, Enkehone's goods are confiscated. Suddenly, the young man is left with nothing once again.

I'm from Somalia, left in the early 90s and although people see poverty, hustling and bustling what you don't see the community, how people look out for one another, and underneath all of this there's no one hooked on fentanyl, living on streets, full of anxiety, ocd, ptsd, cptsd, etc etc etc like people in the west. What they lack in material possessions, they have an abundance in community and closeness. They look out for one another.

My one-year stay in Addis taught me a lot about Ethiopian people. Despite the many challenges, those people you see as poor will always share whatever little they have. What breaks my heart to date is the inequality I saw there, extremely rich people and extremely poor people. My heart bleeds when I see children suffering in poverty despite their innocence.

Growing and building a tower is good. but the Richest person and the government should take care of poor people. Specially Addis Ababa's displaced persons in causes of charming the city. I hope my country will see prosperity and Every bad thing will reduce. If we work hard our leaders and politician will open their eyes to see longer. God bless Ethiopia.

I left Addis when I was 10 years of age to go to the UK due to political reasons - my parents were very well to do in Addis and both were Eritrean's, 34 years ago. It has sadness me to see this in 2023, it's a place I have never returned too! Considering the Chinese and the Western world have taken over Ethiopia, I would have thought the government would have prioritised these vulnerable humans including children. Those flats built should be given to these people.

Thank you for this documentary. Poverty in Ethiopia, as it is in most parts of Africa, is overwhelming. I appreciate the love and the kindness they share with each other. The African leaders have stopped working for their people, so people come up with their own solutions. It is interesting how things work. It is sad to watch so many children growing up in poverty. I wish they consider stopping to have children they can’t afford.

@@theassassin9326 If Ethiopia breaks up it has to be done in a orderly and peaceful manner. Ethiopia is the heart and muscle of the region because she is the regional economic and demographic center so if Ethiopia was to break up in a worst case scenario, Tegray and Afar states should join Eritrea and form a new federal country where Tegrena and Afar-speaking people would constitute the majority populations. Ogaden's Somali inhabitants should join Somalia. The rest of Ethiopia would be composed of Amhara and Oromo and these two groups should learn to live in peace and harmony. Amhara is the center of historic Ethiopia and the Oromo have been culturally influenced by Amhara since the Gonder period so the two groups should emphasize their similarities in order to build the new Ethiopia.

I like the scene that puts the sky scrappers and shack houses on perspective. There are those who lead a luxury life in Addis. And just meters later there are those who barely survive. Such is life in a country governed by corrupt government with a wrong policy.

He didn't say: 'make way please' he said 'road' or 'mind the road'; how touching yet malicious to glorify poverty television style.
