Eurovision Song Contest 2006 - HD Cut - Full Show

2 роки томуOn Saturday 31 July at 21:00 CEST, a never-seen-before HD (high definition) cut of the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 held in Athens will be broadcast for the first time.
This high definition footage was filmed as part of a research experiment carried out by the European Broadcasting Union, ERT, the Institute for Broadcasting Technology in Munich and the research and development laboratories of Rai and the BBC.
It was never intended to be broadcast.
Many aspects of this high definition cut differ from the definitive version of the 51st Eurovision Song Contest that was broadcast live from Athens on Saturday 20 May, 2006.
We’re excited to share this experimental HD footage with you for reference. It is not intended to replace the original show which will be uploaded to the Eurovision UKposts Channel soon.

I think it is worth taking to a moment to acknowledge how far technology has come in the last fifteen years. In 2006, HD was still a long way away for most of Europe. Now most of us are able to stream this over the internet in full HD!

To be fair, 2006 was the year that the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats were launched. And 15 years later, you can still only buy a physical copy of the latest contest on a standard-definition DVD!

Agree, I expected it to be boardcast in 4K now too (or release a 4K UHD Blu-ray to gain some revenue.) Internet booming? Yes!, boardcast? No!

Yeah tbf in 2018 everything was so good in terms of broadcasting but ever since they just did not evolve. Especially in a place like the Netherlands you would expect 4k broadcast. Oh well, maybe Italy can pull it off

When I was a child, I didn't recognize the beauty of Lejla. Took me many years to realize it is one of the best songs in the history of the contest. Would've been a deserving winner any other year.

Because Serbia (and Montenegro) should have participated, but because of some strange people in 🇲🇪 it was canceled. Look at Evropesma 2006 and you will see what happened. Serbia and Montenegro kept their spot to vote without to participate.

Depending on the camera work flags can interfere. Maybe the crowd is a bit quieter during songs than we have now, which would be good.

Now this gives me nostalgia... I was 7 years old as this came out, it was the first ever Eurovision I ever watched, and I watched as everyone was saying that Finland will win (note, I am a Finn myself), and I believed it. I just didn't know or understand what we would win, but we would win, and we did. I have watched every Eurovision Song Contest ever since, never missed one. I am glad to look back at this now at the age of 22. How time flies, but at least it has flown with the company of the lovely music in Eurovision

So true- love Nana Mouskouri! Vicky Leandros competed, too, having represented Luxembourg both in 1967 with “L’Amour Est Bleu” and in 1972, when she won with “Après Toi”. Both ladies hailing from Greece have sublime voices and enjoyed celebrated international careers!!

I guess cause it wasn't originally planned for Croatia to participate. Serbia and Montenegro was meant to go but there was drama surrounding the song that was chosen so S&M didn't go.

I remember shaking my head during the national finals, promising to go hang myself if she won. I didn't live up to my promise and here we are 17 years later... Yeah I understand why Europe didn't like it, can't blame them.

It's actually not so surprising that we have HD footage of old shows! Same with TV shows like Friends or Seinfeld from the 90s: They were shot on film and not tape, so if you scan again the film with today's technology, it looks as if it was shot yesterday and not 30 years ago

Definetely the Real Winner and of course should have won by Miles! But his staging was a mess and the stress eated him. Its obvious! Ah i will never recaver that he didnt won! Love from Greece and finally i remember the summer of 2006 Mihai had moved to Greece, every day he was singing the song everywhere even to the smallest beach bar or night club of Greece! Massive Hit in Greece until now, imagine what was happening back then! We were crazy about the song!

This year is my favorite. I couldn't watch this year on TV because it was not broadcast in Hungary since we didn't take part in the competition this year. I also bought the official dvd and cd. The most perfect ESC shows I have ever seen. The stage is beautiful and imaginative, with great songs and theme music, the semi-final and the finals opening act are both truly original and artistic, the ancient Greek dances are amazing. I also really like the postcards. So it's a real masterpiece! Thank you Greece! Thanks for the HD definition. Greetings from Hungary!

My first Eurovision where I was extremely invested in it all, at just the bare age of nine years. I loved Carola, my childhood star, but I remember how I fell in love with Anna Vissi, who also I voted for and was really let down to see scoring outside the top 5. You can say what you want about the Eurovision Song Contest, but technologically it has always been cutting edge 👍. It's interesting to get an insight of what goes on behind the scenes and how quickly and precisely everything has to run. I think it's safe to say that the stagehands prefer a singer with just a microphone 😉.

This was something magical. Seeing my dad as it was yesterday, disgusted with the masked ones, calling it shame because of his butthurt over his favorite Lejla (we are croatian tho), fights around the house because as a teen i rooted for finland and so on and on. Good times!

You can definitely tell the difference with the wide camera at the back of the arena. But really fascinating to see. So was 2007 the first eurovision that fully had HD cameras? 🙂
