Please SUBSCRIBE -- because I AM making new videos after all, and I promise I'll never put ads in the MIDDLE of my videos. I hate that! And in addition, if you subscribe you won't miss any of my new videos. Thanks!
Now, about THIS video-
On April 21, 2018, I set out on a thru-hike of the 2,189 mile Appalachian Trail. This video is a full-length documentary of my thru-hike from start to finish. It's drawn from my 41 other videos about my thru-hike. My reflections on my thru-hike can be found not here on UKposts, but on Instagram at my account @Backpacker_Comics. Follow me there!
Making appearances in this video: Liz Kidder, Luke Gaudreau, Lydia Schaeffer, Janet Hensley (Ms. Janet), Odie Norman, and many thru-hikers from the Class of 2018, including Yelp, P-1, Peach, Smoky, Denny, Griz, EZ, Shield Maiden, Trailblazer, Big Tuna, Miss Roberts, Poppins, Peanut, Ginger Balls, Mountain Goat, Buckles, ToolTime, Happy Feet, Bob Gnarley, Stumbles, Outlaw the ridgerunner.
Thanks also to the many hikers who agreed to appear in my other AT videos but who couldn't be included in this video because of space, including Joyful Rambler, GrizzleGear, and Hiking the Appalachian Trail with Wheezie & Duck.
Some UKposts channels make appearances too: Hike & Tell, IBTAT, Hike Hunter, Loner2012AT, and (in the Harpers Ferry Section), Scoutmaster, Jake Hikes, Amanda Bess, Sleeves, BateBolt Productions (Pit Boss and Play by Play), Bruce Matson, and Fight for Together (the Crawfords).
If you want to support the Appalachian Trail, you can become a member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. (I did!) You can also support the trail by contributing to 2018 thru-hiker's Bruce Matson's "RTK Challenge," in which donations are matched by Bruce up to $100,000. (I did this too!) Details here: bit.ly/2HxX5tA
The trail lore I talk about in these videos is derived from my reading about the AT. A full bibliography is given in the description to the first video in this series (AT #1).

I'm an 80 year old guy who has dreamed of walking the trail but as life and health get in the way was not able to do it myself. However Evan, because of you " Racoon1" has made the trip and dream come true! If I'm ever in Nashville I would like to shake your hand and buy you a beer!! Thanks and God Bless!!

I retired at 62 with the expectation of doing this trail. Spent too much money on new gear, pronptly got a lung infection, covid hit, finally survived tne li g I fection and now at 70, I’m working my way back. I can go about 4 hours now without a break. Maybe by next year…

@frankedgar6694 Frank, I'm 61, right there with you. Dreamed of walking the AT all my life, military life and family and just life in general has been an obstacle. I'll retire in 6 years and will hopefully be in good enough shape to still complete the walk. I'm inspired by older folks attempting and succeeding the AT walk. Thx for your point of view.

Six thousand years from now, when anthropologists are trying to recreate the appalachian trail, this video is found on a half destroyed youtube server somehow preserved in the ash from yellowstone's eruption. It had been 5500 years since the first alien invasion, 2900 yrs since the eighth intergalactic war, and 1500 yrs since we found intelligent species in a galaxy other than our own, yet this is considered the greatest archeological find in hundreds of years.

It’s the only reason I continued watching it after he began rifling through abandoned camps with food & supplies, which are to be reported as most are missing people who have yet to be found. The AT claims approx 100 lives a year that don’t return home from the trails & are missing for years.

Seeing the hiker in the video who was working on eating 4 fully-loaded hot dogs reminded me about one of my backpacking ‘revelations’ which had to do with what some might call ‘hunger’ that I realized then was more properly understood as ‘food insecurity’. I ate regularly on the trail and actually gained 15 pounds of muscle in a month by carrying my load plus I started taking some of the load off others in my group and taking their donations of cheese and hard salami which I snacked on as I walked. For a month I was in the Marble Mountain Wilderness of Northern California - there were no shelters, huts, hostels, waystations, visitor centers, grocery stores, restaurants, motels, etc. I did get really tired of freeze-dried peas and carrots so when I went out on a 3 day solo with no food I was so happy to catch trout from the nearby lake and cook it up in my canteen cup with wood sorrel I had foraged. I also had the opportunity to cross the rimrock ridge of a box canyon and drop down into a series of lakes with no trails going into them where my partner and I caught 36 trout in an hour and a half - we had trout for lunch, trout for dinner, and trout for breakfast and then brought the remainder back to the rest of the group to satisfy their own food insecurity. I’m 76 now and can hardly walk with bad knees and a bad back after years as a wildland firefighter - but I still love trout! Here’s a video I made about that trip many years later - the song was recorded in 1998 and the video made in 2010: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/p5F2ip6irK2Go5to.html

Liz's final (and unforgettable) AT video is here: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/anyUZZhqqJl8uJ8.html Please watch it at once: you won't be disappointed! Now, about what I'm doing going forward-- I’m writing this comment from home-which means I’m back at home! Many have asked about "post-trail adjustment." I’m so glad I hiked the AT, but I’m also glad I’m back at home. For me, post-trail adjustment will be easy. For one, I’m returning to a busy life. And two, I can rely on one of the truths I learned about myself on the AT: being at home with my family will always be preferable to being away. (Well, I knew this already, but the AT experience confirmed it for me once again.) If you have specific questions about my hike, please leave a comment and I promise to respond. My email address is in the video description, but please limit the emails to private matters. If you think the answer to your questions might be beneficial to others, please leave a comment rather than sending an email. If you want to stay connected to me in my upcoming activities, please follow me on Instagram at my account @Backpacker_Comics. I’m putting my post-trail thoughts there! Links to all the places you can find my music are listed on the website "evanschaeffermusic.com." That includes Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud (all my new stuff goes here first), Free Music Archive, and my other UKposts channel, "Evan Schaeffer Music." Finally, if you have any interest in satiric writing about lawyers and the law, check out my book "How to Feed a Lawyer (and Other Observations from the Legal Underground)" at Amazon. There is a website that collects my biography, writings, and all other relevant links in one place--"evanschaeffer.com" Thanks to all who followed my hiking adventures on this channel! And remember, it's not ALL about the Appalachian Trail -- I've hiked many trails and tried to make interesting videos about them, including the Benton MacKaye Trail and the Sheltowee Trace, plus many trips in the Smokies. All these videos will remain up at this channel, so consider watching them sometime if you haven't already. Thanks!

It was a cool spring day, clear skies and over 100 miles of visibility. Just gorgeous on top of that mountain. On the way up, we shared a portion of the climb with a young woman from Michigan who was starting her journey to conquer the Appalachian Trail from Maine southward.
