It feels like almost two years to the date, we might need a remake of this episode. While informative as is, it needs more pictures, illustrations, and more explanations how they differ from each other (I blame BMW). How an estate is different from a Berlinetta, which is different from a hatchback, which is different from a fastback? Believe it to have huge potential to be reference material @Donut_Media.

Nowadays, I generally use the term "crossover" to describe the current trend of lower-profile SUVs with extremely sloped rear ends. Since they exist in the awkward void between an SUV and a hatchback sedan.

For some reason in Germany we call a Sedan "Limousine", and a Limousine we call "Stretch-Limousine"

One that was missed was hardtops both 2 and 4 door. These chars had no b piller it was to offer a solid roof of a sedan and the air flow of a convertible. Wonderfully informative video.

I wish you showed more examples then just talk about them, but still, great video. The Business Coupe makes me think of Moonshine Runners. I hope you do a video like this on motorcycles and other vehicles too.

In the UK, Sedan is called a Saloon, A Kammback style is called a Liftback in many Japanese Classics especially if the slanted rear glass opens upwards. Minivans in the USA are larger while Europe comes in different sizes and calls them MPV's or People Carriers. Japan has the Kei Car Class which are smaller and taller than a subcompact car. A glorified wagon or estate is a SUV. Yes it's pretty puzzling and amusing how cars evolve into different bodystyles.

The video is informational and I appreciate it. Still, as people have already complained about it in the comments, I'm gonna reiterate the same sentiment that the video REALLY needed more pics when he was talking about different body types and cars.

I (sort of) owned a Škoda Felicia Combi. Combi being like a station wagon but smaller, at least I think that's what they meant. Also, my earlier Porsche 944 was classified as a 'hatchback' in my country. Probably to keep the amount of classifications manageable. Third point: I wonder what you'd call the Smart Roadster. I think it's a sort of Targa variant, especially the Brabus ones?

I have a '77 Fiat X19 I've kept for a couple decades. It has a hard panel roof that can be removed and go in the front trunk. I always thought of it as a convertible, but would that more accurately be characterized as a targa top? I never really considered that the soft top/hard top nomenclature didn't apply to convertibles with a removable hard top.

Great video! One style that Nolan might have missed - what about the 'ute' body style? A two-door coupe utility vehicle that was famously invented by Ford Australia in 1934. A funky mix involving a closed body compartment for two at the front with an open cargo tray at the rear similar to a pickup truck. Australians had the body style for many decades as Ford Falcon Utes, Chrysler Valiant Utes or Holden Utes. The body style was also used on other cars globally such as the Chevrolet El Camino, Subaru Brumby and Baja. And yes, car nerds go apeshit over the various convertible body style terms!

I just watched this video. You mentioned the term when you talked about convertibles but you didn’t talk about the “hardtop” compared to the sedan or coupe.

You forgot the Kombi. Central Europe, former Czechoslovakia, but also known in German speaking part of Europe. The Kombi is basically a Station Wagon. While we have a "Kombi", we also have a "Stejšn" (STW) in Czechia and Slovakia alike. The popular Škoda 1202 Station had 4 doors - front doors, then one left door for the passengers in the back and then the rear door for luggage. There was only one door on the right side of the car. That is what makes a difference to a Kombi. The roght side has only one door for the passenger next to the driver. So that is what we call an STW. Then there was the Škoda Octavia Kombi, which had only three doors (one in the back). Also, a two door Sedan is a Tudor (two-door - Tudor) and only a four door Sedan is a Sedan. The number of doors makes the difference. The Tudor, however, has rear seats which can fit even an adult. A Kupé, or Coupé has only front seats, emergency back seats are allowed but you would not want to sit there for any longer journeys than 10 minutes. To sum it up. While most of the world uses the terms Station and Kombi interchangeable, former Czechoslovakia uses the termn Station when the car does not have a right door for the passengers on the back seat and Kombi if it has the back door, or has only three doors overall (third one in the back). A symmetrical STW is a Kombi an an "asymmetrical" STW is a Station. A sedan has 4 doors, A Tudor has two doors but somewhat normal sized back seats and a Coupe has only two seats but can have emergency seats in the back. The term Limousine is used for elongated cars that allow greater space for the passengers on the back seats. They do not have to be super stretched to have extra seats however.

the American Dream was in the movie "The Mask" True SUVs are also often separated from Crossovers by having 4wd instead of AWD. The systems are different as 4wd is part time(usually driving the rear wheels)and the transfer case is manually engaged by lever or some kind of switch and has two speeds. 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. AWD is always on and always moving power around, such as Subaru and Audi systems. Though this could also just be an American thing having 4wd and AWD being separate terms.

What do you call a Ranchero or an El Camino. From the B-column forward, they are definitely sedan-like. Behind the B-column there is a truck bed, but the outer sheet metal suggests a topless station wagon.

In spanish (and italian), sedans are more commonly known as "berlina" (berliner), name based on (drum roll) a horse carriage that had a trunk on the back. Berlina is also a name for a sweet doughnut like bun with chocolate or cream filling instead of a hole.

Is there a special name for cars where the back seat can fold down flat like the early Plymouth Barracuda? Usually the "trunk" was upholstered, and you could put an air mattress back there and sleep on it. I think some Plymouth Dusters and some early-'70s Chevy Novas had this option too.

You forgot liftback. Also, station wagons and estates are often called combi in the European market.

i feel the rx8 is about as 4 door as you can get while still calling it a coupe. the reason i say this is because the back doors open backwards, are smaller than the front ones, the car has a coupe design inside, and you can’t open the back doors without opening the front ones first and you gotta close the back ones before you close the front. this makes 2 rear passenger doors more like secondary doors or just an extension of your front doors. idk i hope that makes sense

You forgot the Liftback, it's a sedan with a full hatch instead of a trunk lid, like the european 5-door Ford Mondeo, some generations of the Opel Vectra and Nissan Primera, the Skoda Octavia or the SEAT Toledo Mk1/Mk4 (the Toledo Mk1 was dessigned by Giorggeto Giugiaro, again).
