What should the next Every Inaccuracy video be? The 2010 movie is first because when I asked people which movie they’d prefer I do, they overwhelmingly voted for the new one. I decided to add in the 1981 movie while the video was being edited just so everyone could be satisfied.

Well clearly, the Kraken is on loan from the Norse pantheon. Njord apparently owed Poseidon a favor and Hades had to go collect.

It’s always weird that when people in most medias talk about Zeus and his brothers taking on The titans, the sisters are always left out.

Truly an ambitious movie. Not only did it crossover with two other distinct mythologies, the writers managed to add even more incest to the Greek part.

From what I've heard, the reason you don't see Stheno or Euryale in most adaptations of Greek Mythologies is because they were "afterthoughts" in Greek Mythology. The way I heard it described, the Greeks really loved the idea of triads (The Big 3, Hekate the Triple Goddess, The Fates, The Furies, etc), so when they came up with Medusa, they gave her two sisters to "complete the set". I could be wrong, though.

Dude. Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Mads Mikkelsen, Nicholas Hoult, Luke Evans, Liam Cunningham, etc. They really had a lot of great actors in the 2010 version.

I like that you brought up the different versions of Medusa. Most of the time people just accept Ovids telling because it was the latest, even though the other version existed. Also Ovid was known for rewriting existing stories for the sole purpose of making the gods worse, because he had a distain for authority figures. The gods didn't need help being bad people Ovid. Also Ovid's telling doesnt make sense because Medusa wasnt the only gorgon. She had 2 sisters.

Sounds like the writers got the conception of Perseus confused with that of Heracles. Which is a little odd, considering that Heracles was a descendant of Perseus. Huh, I had no idea that version of the Medusa story was from Hesiod. I'd always thought that was a sanitized version of the Ovid story that came later. Interesting stuff. As I recall, Acrisius was basically exploiting a loophole to avoid being punished. Essentially, his logic was "if Danae and Perseus die at sea, then it's technically Poseidon's fault and not mine." I find it a little disturbing how common of a filicide tactic this was in the mythology, considering that the same method was used against Heracles and Atalanta, just off the top of my head. Unexpected Spaceballs, but much appreciated. For those curious, Thetis was instead married off to a mortal man named Peleus. And just as the prophecy said, Thetis bore Peleus a son stronger than him. You know him well, his name is Achilles.

A few notes about the kraken: 1. Harryhausen was well aware that it wasn't from Greek Mythology. He just wanted to make it because he had already made a lot of dragons and sea monsters in his career. 2. Though we now think of the kraken as being a cephalopod, it took a while before this interpretation stuck. Medieval and renaissance depictions vary from depicting it as a squid, whale, or lobster. In the earliest stories about the kraken, the only consistent detail is that it was big enough to be confused for an island.

Perseus was one of my favorites growing up alongside the Odyssey. The fact that the Kraken was in it always pissed me off.

A few things. 1. Thank you so much for doing this! I saw COTT 2010 for the first time last year and I actually riffed on it, pointing out it's inaccuracies myself while doing so. I was inspired by you. 2. There is a giant vulture in Greek mythology if you count the Prometheus vulture. Though it is described as an eagle in more sources than a vulture. 3. There's an episode of Friendship is magic that features Orthrus! In fact, there are a lot mythological creatures that appear on Friendship is magic, most of them Greek.

That's actually not meant to be Orthrus. Ray Harryhausen originally wanted to do Cerberus but found that the 3 heads were difficult to animate and so he created his own creature, which he called Dioskilos. The original Clash of the Titans, despite all its quirks and inaccuracies, is one of my favorite fantasy films. Glad to see you show it some love here and not just the abysmal remake.

28:58 There actually is one in the story of Phylios. Phylios was in love with this guy Cycnus. Cycnus agreed to be his lover if Phylios could complete a series of dangerous tasks. The second task was capturing a flock of giant vultures that had been eating people. To make a long story short, Phylios succeeded. But then Cycnus sent him on another, deadlier task. In the middle of the new task Heracles (who's become a god at this point) appears to Phylios and helps him realize Cycnus is a jerk who's leading him on. So Phylios quits mid-task and breaks up with Cycnus. (Cycnus then kills himself)

Oh heckin' yeah, I've seen both versions myself and getting to see my fav mythos-man working on them is just awesome!

I actually really enjoy the reboot. I saw it when I was young and thought at the time it was awesome. It helped me get into studying Greek mythology. Unfortunately not too accurate to the traditional myths and legends in retrospect unfortunately.

Im honestly surprised someone hasn't tried to do a Greek Myth Cinematic Universe.

I remember watching the 1981 movie as a kid I also have an idea for my own Perseus movie lol. Basically four kids named after Greek mythology characters (Cassandra, Jason, Daphne, and Hector) notice the constellation of Perseus in the sky. Cassandra, a Greek mythology nerd, realizes it’s Perseus and tells her friends the story.

If I recall correctly, Acrisius threw Danae and Perseus in the sea BECAUSE he wanted to avoid the punishment of killing his own child, otherwise he would probably just killed them regulary ˆˆ And I guess Zeus didn't punished him because in the end, both Danae and Perseus survived XD

The Persian Sphinx you pointed out is actually a Lamassu which was an Assyrian thing that the Persians later picked up, you can see a few more smaller scale and even painted ones in the city scene there too.

I love these videos. I'm the type of person who rarely enjoys a story twice. Altered versions help, but not as much as I wish it did. These videos are one of the few ways I can enjoy something more, having seen the subject before. Thank you.

This was a great video. The original Clash of the Titans was one of the movies that got me into greek mythology.

Not gonna lie, even with all the inaccuracies, old school Clash of the Titans is still the singular movie that made me fall in love with Greek Mythology and Mythology as a whole. I watched it dozens of times when I was a kid. The newer one....well, I watched it once and that was MORE than enough. Great video...I found myself correcting stuff right along side you or chuckling all throughout!

Great video! I had no idea about Zeus almost marrying Thetis, I always heard that she fled from both him and Poseidon until the prophecy came out. I also didn't know about Medusa's blood spawning snakes. And you perfectly replicated my reaction to the djinn being in the remake. I like the look of the djinn, but their presence was about as mind-boggling as the vulture from the original. I thought it interesting, or maybe you just didn't think it worth mentioning, that Bubo's name is LATIN for OWL, which obviously shouldn't have been a thing yet. Also not sure why the Graeae Sisters were cannibals in both versions. I was also wondering if you knew of any gods cursing mortals with agelessness for any reason, because I didn't come across anything like that. I guess not. I also wanted to point out with the ridiculous amount of race-swapping we've been seeing in films lately. The remake missed an opportunity to make Andromeda black given that she was a princess of Ethiopia. Since everyone (or rather the media) wants a black princess/queen so badly, they could easily do that with Andromeda and make it accurate! Sure, by that logic, Cleopatra should have been black (which has been debunked A LOT thanks to her family tree), but as far as I know, anyone who complains of Andromeda being black wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on like with Cleopatra. Thanks so much for honoring my request! Look forward to seeing your next video! Do you think you could look into some Greek character skins for Dead By Daylight? I'd love to know your thoughts on them, because while I like a lot of them, and some seem pretty accurate, there are some that are just hilariously (or horrifyingly) off (ex: The Clown's Hades skin).

The 2010 film really does get a lot of right imo but there's so much weird & changed stuff too.

you made two mistakes there my friend ( not to be a boomer or anything, I really like your channel and content so much :) ) 1- 13:24 Djinn do exist in Islamic lore and Arabian folk tales, they are speaking Arabic in this movie btw so I guess this is the version they are going with. 2- 28:23 this is not a Sphinx, it's called a Lamasu or a Winged bull. and this design is Mesopotamian, for there has been two old designs, one is Assyrian and the other is Babylonian. the persians did have another design of the Lamasu as could be seen in the city of Persepolis, but this was much later when they got highly influenced by the Mesopotamian architecture once they controlled that region. p.s. the 2010 ver did actually feature a gate with two Lamasu statues around the same sequence with scorpions and all.

If I may be so bold: if this movie is using the Roman version of Medusa's origins, her sisters obviously wouldn't be in her lair with her, as she wouldn't have them. Euryale and Steno are from her oldest origin story, but they don't appear in the more recent ones.

Might be fun to review them, either one vid per ep or all at once, as it has perhaps the most accurate Medusa in any media, given that it's the only one I know that has her sisters with her in every scene and gives her WINGS!

I get this way about the Thor movies and other modern adaptations of Norse mythology. Marvel had Freya, the goddess of the Home, be defeated in her OWN HOME.
