A few days ago, Jordan Poole was called for a carry violation 3 times against the Miami Heat. This made a controversy across the league because it looks like it's only targeted to a certain amount of players. Carrying the basketball has been a violation since the start of basketball but when Allen Iverson came in, he exploited the rule with his famous killer crossover. Now many players have adopted this dribbling style making it completely unguardable. In this video, we take a look at the carrying violation, the evolution of the call in the NBA and the effects it has in today's game.
Please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and leave a comment about what you think!
I do not own any highlights used in this video.

I started watching NBA with my old man when I was 7 in 1959, the year Wilt Chamberlain entered the league as a rookie. During the 60s and 70s the referees often called a carry but back then it was an inadvertent mistake on the player’s part, not a deliberate act to bend the rules. This trend to deliberately carry the ball seems to have started on the basketball courtyards when kids wanted to emulate the dribbling wizardry of Pete Maravich whose moving skills while dribbling was legitimate without having to carry the ball. To me, carrying the ball to bend rules in order to gain the advantage is not skillful, it’s sloppy and reflects a personality trait of someone who’s willing to cheat. Bring back rule enforcement.

You are correct. I've watched from 89 to 24 and can still see how much the basketball rules have changed. Prior to 80s players dribbled from there finger tips and were driven to reach the hoop as opposed to the 3ball of today (which is another thing that drives me insane... the shooting formation. They look like WNBA shooters.)

Killer crossover was Tim Hardaway, not Iverson. Carries are pretty easy, at least back in the day. If your dribble started from the lower third of the ball, it was a carry. I just laugh at half the players today who cannot dribble without rolling over the ball. And the fouls are easy - whoever initiates contact. It drives me nuts every time a defender plays great defense and the offensive player decides to simply accelerate into the defender and the ref bails out the offensive player.

i think when people saw IT or AI and say they carried, it’s because of the longer pause that happens when the ball is in one hand. i guess some people think that counts as discontinuing the dribble cuz it’s really easy to manipulate the ball like that, but i feel like it’s impossible to know if someone is doing that on purpose or if they’re going with the flow of the dribble… idk if that makes sense

I just want to point out that NBA refs judge a carry by the middle of the palm. If the middle of the palm goes below the middle equator, it's considered a carry, not necessarily if their fingers go below the ball. So, you technically are allowed to have your fingers go beyond the lower equator of the ball, so long as the middle of the palm doesn't go below the ball. You are also allowed to put your hand on the side and behind the ball. That is not a carry, so long as the middle of the palm goes beyond the mid point.

I've been saying this for several years now, but even louder lately, making myself sound like an old has-been sayin, "When I played... XYZ!". In my time, any time hand was at "4 o'clock and 8 o'clock" on the ball when dribbling, it was going to be called a carry every time. It's so pervasive, that it has dribbled (LOL) down to even my peewee bball. Every time they dribble, it's like they're turning the ball over in their hand. Do people think the overwhelmingly majority of players just instantly, and collectively, became Kyrie-level ballhandlers and crossing people up like they do nowadays! Nah... it's because players are allowed to carry. There's no other way to switch direction that quickly and legally dribble the ball.

Any time that the ball hand supports the ball, it's a carry, the same rule is in volleyball. Catching the dribbling ball is illegal af. This new wave, eoro style basketball is unrecognizable, to 80's kids

Crack down on it!!! It would make the game harder for these guys and make the game more competitive.

I love how they just let things like this go for almost 20years maybe more than all the sudden they decide to enforce it this year and don't expect people to be pissed. If they consistently called the rule all these years there would be a clear cut definition of the rule, going back and forth calling it and not makes it super unclear what you're allowed to do or not, so here we are! Consistency matters for refs more than anything, these drastic and instant unannounced changes are just going to convolute the rule and piss off more people.

You act like they're constantly alternating; they stopped calling it in the early 2000s because of AND1 popularity and are ONLY NOW correcting it because its so blatant that young players dont even know how to dribble without carrying and traveling where as before players had the intuition to immediately know when they were doing so. Just stop traveling and palming the ball problem solved its as easy as that...

The game doesn't move that fast today , it's definitely a carry and it takes away from the honest flow of the game

In my day these things were called palming, and dubble dribble. If the ball stops in the hand you can't dribble again. If the ball stops in the hand and you take two steps it is traveling. Things like this is one of the reasons people don't tune in.

You should do another one about traveling especially off of their pivot foot, which technically is not allowed
@bricefleckenstein9666

NBA changed the rules in 2009 to allow up to *4* legitimate steps (counting the "gather") and a BASE of 2 steps. So taking a step off your pivot foot IN THE NBA is usually legal.
@onlyfacts3178
@onlyfacts3178 Рік тому
@@bricefleckenstein9666 no...its not 4 legit steps..and gather is not a step...you can gather the ball without taking steps...gathering doesnt mean an extra step.

@bricefleckenstein9666 Рік тому
@@onlyfacts3178 The "Gather" rule allows for 1 or 2 EXTRA steps, depending on the situation, over and above the current "2 step" rule. READ the rule sometime.

I dont know what rules the NBA goes by, traveling, jumping into people, carrying the ball, its like watching a foreign sport you know nothing about. I cant watch it.

Isaiah @ 4:53 mark dribbled, switched the ball in his hands from left to his right hand without dribbling and then continued dribbling. That's a suspension of his dribble and a double dribble violation.🤷‍♂

cant you do a hesitation move WITHOUT the hand component, i.e. using your eyes, your head, leaning your body...there are a lot of ways to sell a hesitation move without needing to actually carry the ball

This is why you have to take all these offensive numbers of today with a grain of salt. You can't defend someone with illegal handles. defense is being phased out of NBA basketball.

I play in very low level leagues in rural Australia and I noticed carrys start to be called less and less in the 2010s. I first started playing 2004 and ref's were all over it for my first few years. Honestly as long as a player doesn't either scoop it up and take several steps then continue dribbling or come to a complete stop with their hand under it then continue I don't care, I'd prefer the game to just keep moving rather than having more whistles blown.
