You are wrong about Bay Area support. the hockey interest was high on the west side of the bay, i.e. San Francisco, San Mateo county and San Jose, Santa Clara county.. But the Nhl would not let the team play in the Cow Palace, they had to play across the bay in the new Oakland arena, which was 30 to 40 miles away from the hockey fans in the Bay area. Thus, although weekend Friday night games were usually sold out in Oakland, but midweek games, i.e. fans have to go to work the next morning, meant crowds of around 3,000 to 4,000... ...it was similar to the current Ottawa Senators situation, the arena was too far away from the actual fans....the hockey fans were developed on the west side of the bay by the San Francisco Seals of the Western Hockey League, who began in Nov 1961, and won 2 titles in 1963 and 1964 at the Cow Palace. The Seals were so popular that the Nhl team took their nickname and several of their players like Charlie Burns and Gerry Odrowski to the NHL team. ...... also, notice that the team was lousy for most of their years in Oakland, and they failed miserably in one season in Cleveland, thus accenting the fact that they were supported by Bay area fans about as well as could be expected.... the success of the San Jose Sharks, who began by playing 2 sold out seasons in the Cow Palace, beginning in 1991, just gives total confirmation to the facts I described here.

Funfact - the Atlanta Flames were actually named after a giant fire that burned the city down (somewhat similar to Chicago calling themselves the Second City after recovering from their fire) - since the team did not rename once they moved to Calgary - Calgary's NHL team is named after the city of Atlanta burning down.

I was born and raised in Hartford Connecticut... I would love to see my beloved Hartford Whalers come back enjoying the ranks of the NHL again. That will never be true as long as Gary Bettman is still in charge of the NHL. I believe Hartford would be a strong Market would have an incredible fan base and I really think stockholders of the NHL should rethink a decision about granting Hartford an NHL team. Just a correction Pierre Elliot Trudeau died several years ago and was a former prime minister of Canada and it is now his son Justin Trudeau who is Prime minister. @stevensherman4756
@stevensherman4756 4 роки тому
To clarify things, the NHL Commissioner is hired by the owners. It's the owners who make the decision about where to add teams, moving teams, disbanding teams, etc. Bettman cannot make a decision like that on his own. I'm guessing there isn't an economic model in place that tells the other owners that a new team in Quebec City will be successful financially (now that the new arena is built). It's still a small market that won't be able to overcome the exchange rate between $US and $CDN. I would think that the Rouge, Blanc et Bleu have something to say about it too.

yeah, it was so full and exciting that both teams left. If it wasn't for a "Save the Whalers" campaign, they would have left sooner due to poor attendance. And this occurred in cities where there were no other major professional teams to compete for entertainment dollars while having some of the lowest ticket prices in the league compared to average income. Teams benefit and gain fans by having star players and being successful, and most suffer in attendance when the team does poorly. That's how the business works.

Honestly Cleveland needs another chance. By the time the Seals/Barons got here, there was so much financial damage done that there was no way the team would have been viable. Meanwhile, these days the Monsters, our AHL team, is usually near the top of their league for attendance year after year.

John Stark - The Flyers of the 1970s were bad boys indeed, but the Fighting Saints were the worst. Outside of a very old Davey Keon whose best years were over 15 years before, there was little hockey skill on that team. Even the WHA Birmingham Bulls were straight up hockey players by comparison and they were basically a goon squad. I did watch a lot of WHA hockey living here in Houston. The fans in Philly, regardless of sport are well known to be the worst, although Boston fans come close from my experience.

M Detlef - I think you have it a little confused. Mark Howe had a great NHL career most notably with the Flyers - not like his father’s but then again, who has. It was MARTY who’s career was cut short by that injury. It was because of how Marty was hurt that the goal mounts now break away. When Gordie joined the WHA in Houston in the early 1970s, both Mark and Marty were going to Sharpstown High School here in town.

If the NHL was smart, (they're not. They're North America's most inept of the 4 major sports leagues for a reason) they would give Atlanta with it's fast growing population, diversity, and abundance of corporate headquarters a team again. NHL at least was VERY reluctant to leave Atlanta and only did begrudgingly when they couldn't find an owner in Atlanta. The NY metro has 3 teams..... They don't need that many. Islanders or Devils should move to Atlanta. Arizona should also keep their team because they are also fast growing, diverse market. Does LA metro need 2 teams? No. Ducks should also move to Houston.

amazing...One of the reasons why the new Owner took the team to Raleigh was lack of fan support. 11k or 12k per game just didn't cut it. The "Mall" as it was referred to affectionately( or not) is an older outdated arena with an inadequate seating capacity. To attract a team back to Hartford would require a new arena and a significant fee to the Bruins for territorial infringement.
