Better Idea: Having no fence gates and being normal fences, but covered in carpet, That makes it so the mob of choice (in this case a chicken) cant to through it, but Players can.

I usually just put the chickens on top of a hopper and incase them in glass. It could be the size of the room though. It only needs 4 blocks of height.
