I figured the poop kit would be a little higher on the stack or in an outside pocket. I learned early on that I didn't want to have to dig for it in an emergency.

REIs need a MItW "Gear Miranda And The Crew Use" display at every store. Or, at least, a MItW Approved Big Blinking Arrow for gear - especially at the various price points that you've covered over the years. Because, honestly, I'd buy whatever you told me to buy.

The old saying is: If a pine needle falls in the forest, the eagle sees it, the deer hear it, and the bear smells it. I would much rather have the bear grabbing my food from the tent than grabbing me. I do not buy the myth that people are attacked over their toothpaste. The bear knows exactly what he is smelling, it is meat, you. The bear does not accidentally bite through your tent and grab you because he smelled your toothpaste. Read "Fighting For Your Life" by Tom Hron. Another good read is "4 Seconds to Until Impact" by Bruce Buckshot Hemming.

One recommendation from @gingeraffebald1 & I: stuff your sleep system & anything else that MUST stay dry in a white, 3mil contractor bag. Then roll up the top and pack the rest as usual. In a sudden downpour or accidental dip in a creek crossing you'll be thankful your bag & spare clothes are dry! This is especially true if you've got down insulation. The bag takes up no space and weighs nothing.

I've watched "what's in my pack" vids ad nauseum, but this was by far the most entertaining one I've ever seen! 😂 That being said, GREAT info for the novice. You hit all the general talking points, but added the "whys" when needed for someone who wouldn't know why you'd need X item to do Y thing. Good stuff. Oh, AND I like your kit choices. No unnecessary weight where not needed and nothing too flimsy that would fail you in the woods. The only thing I'd add (if I missed it, I'm sorry) is bear spray & bug dope (repellant). Even if there aren't bears where someone hikes, it works on mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, two legged predators, whatever. Why carry bug dope in the winter when there are no bugs? Well, it's always good to have period so it's never forgotten in the Spring and secondly, it actually makes a decent fire starter when someone would need to have a fire in a pinch believe it or not.

As always, fun and great videos! I'm always checking to see what's out there even after nearly 30 years of bp-ing. And always at war with myself with the comfort vs. UL battle. I tried out the Nemo Tensor (at the Cary REI!) but opted for the comparable STS - heavier fabric, tufted construction - didn't feel like I was going to roll off of it. Odd, I love NEMO and think they're a great company but never have been able to get myself to buy any of their stuff. Weird, eh? Oh, and REI is my go-to unless I need to get proprietary UL stuff the dealers don't sell - which is a risk b/c it's hard to beat REI's customer service (especially when I'm only like 12 minutes away).

A trick we use to do with the water is just a normal 1 l soda bottle and add fish tubing through the cap get two of them on each side of the pack and its a simple system to switch lid on the bottles. Then you can also use one to drink from other to cook from it allows you to ad flavoring to your water without messing up dinner.

I personally use an IcePlate by Qore as a hydration solution. They are the shape of a body armour plate and we use them in our plate carriers to help us keep cool (or warm in the winter, as it can handle warm fluids) and also give us a hard plastic water container in a form factor thats similar to a water bladder. I find that I can fit it most hydration pouches in packs as well, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be body armour/plate carrier attached.

I know is being asked a year later but I have watch you pack your backpack & watch you stuff your sleeping bag into the bottom of the pack & not placing it in a stuff sack. Big question: we often have to carry all our water in as where we live & hike- best not to filter water. How do we keep any water from leaking down our packs onto our sleeping bags. We do use Nalgene bottles- so far we have been ok- but we have also used stuff sacks for our sleeping bags but it seems easier to not use them. Thanks in advance & love watching your channel & learned so much from you already!

"Buttcheek in A Ditch" the new MiTW album coming to a record store near you in 2022. A good breakdown of the pack, but seriously: beef up the first aid stuff. :)

As another hiker once wisely stated, "Only carry what you know how to use." For me that would be Band-Aids, alcohol wipes (Honorable mention: Neosporin or iodine), Mole Skin, Needle, Tweezers (found in the pocket knife), Aspirin, and Pepto. Everything else can wait until I get back into town after camping. If you consider sunscreen "first aid" then that too.

I watched your episode where you asked what “luxuries” you should bring. I would bring only one: Miranda!

Love your videos. Sadly the Nemo stuff is not shippable to the Netherlands :-( What would be your second best options for the Nemo stuff?

Tensor and Fillo are def my picks as well. Nemo makes some great stuff. Will take the regular Fillo with foam over the Elite anyway though…. I actually carry the luxury (larger foam version) in my kinda UL pack and it’s still 12-13lbs total iirc not counting consumables and that’s with a wide Tensor!

I spent 24 years in the Army and during that span, one of the many transitions I witnessed was from canteens to hydration systems. They definitely make it easy and convenient to stay hydrated; your water consumption will invariably increase if you have that hose hang there all the time. However my verdict is that they are more trouble than they are worth; punctures, dripping bite valves, difficult to keep clean and sanitized, and expensive$. Simple water bottle for me thank you.

See what I do is have a 1+liter Fiji water bottle with the sports cap on it, I used a knife and widened the hole so that way my water bladders hose fits in and now I can still use the hose but instead the containers on the side of the pack not inside

Easy to keep sanitized if you store in the freezer ;)

If you put some lemon or lime juice in with your water for the water reservoir, it will combat the plastic taste and should taste more like normal water. That's what I do, but taste is all subjective 🤷‍♂️

+1 - also, rose water, Antésite, or a splash of cheap rum or whatever also works effectively. :-)

Hey Miranda, if you're gonna pack your sleeping bag loose why not the tent as well? I prefer using a bag liner to put the stuff I need dry inside. That way I can pack my tent loose inside the pack but between the liner and the pack wall. This also keeps a leaky hydration bladder from getting your dry goods wet. I don't use a pack cover anymore since I went to a liner (trash compactor bag) inside. Great video as always. Happy Trails!

Hey! I've had a lot of people suggest I try a trash compactor bag over the years, and I've just never made the switch! I store my tent in the bag so it doesn't get everything dirty, but maybe it's time I try your technique. Thanks for the tip! - Miranda
