Everything Wrong With Eurovision Song Contest 1980

3 роки тому1980 is arguably the all-time most iconic edition of Eurovision, so I thought it was the perfect thing to be pulled apart and nit-picked in a CinemaSins-esque fashion.
My comments for each song don’t necessarily reflect whether or not I like the song itself (Norway is actually one of my favourites from this year). I tried to make this video as opinion-free as possible so as to not alienate people with different music tastes. I know how Eurovision fans can be…

some facts about the 1980 Eurovision: Israel won in 1979, but for financial reasons, as they hosted 1979, it did not host it again in 1980. The Netherlands volunteered to host it in 1980. As the contest was on the evening of Israel Memorial Day, Israel declined to participate, which made Morocco participate. most arab countries did not air the Eurovision, or blocked the screen during Israel's performance.

I think you forgot two things. 1. Kelly Sakkakou (she spoke the introduction for Greece) had forgotten her text and had to look it again on her piece of paper. 2. When Tomas Ledin sang the song ''Just Nu'' for Sweden, the cable for the microphone fell on the floor and he had to put it back in.

Actually, during the voting she had a new phone for every country she was talking to. I think it was the first time since 1958 that there was an actual phone on stage during the voting.

1980 was the first ESC I watched all through (I did watch bits of 1978 and 1979 but it was past my bedtime) and made me fall in love with the contest. TELEX is still in my top, somewhere... I was 9, it meant so much to me. When I do my top 10 favourite Eurovision songs as an adult now, and have TELEX in the there, I just *have* to because that year it was my favourite and I was 9, and it personally means so much to me 🙂

0:36 - Beethoven is actually more German then Austrian. Yes he worked mostly in Vienna, yet he was born in Bonn and in fact his family originally is from Belgium.

This was way more hilarious than I thought, would love to see more! (Especially of 1990, the sins for breaking the 'ESC isn't political' rule alone would stack up, and in hindsight the 'Yugoslavia is like an orchestra' just makes me question what goes on behind the scenes in orchestras)

Poor Netherlands - it was in Den Haag because no one else wanted to host which is why they reused the slogan and city from the last time they hosted. Also Amsterdam is a great song.

The spelling of Luxembourg is ambiguous as I have seen it spelt without the “o” in English and it is probably spelt without the “o” in Dutch as it is a Germanic language most similar to German where they spell it without the “o”

I actually kind of like this music. And I hate modern Eurovision. Its the orchestra. It just adds that organic touch. And Belgium's synth song was pretty cute. Not exactly good but those old synthesizers are Kawaii af.

It only had to be member of EBU, same as 🇮🇱. Tunisia was going to participate one year, but withdrew and Lebanon was going to participate, but were refused when it was revealed that it would not be showing Israeli entry.
