Everytime I fertilized my corn this year it has poured a flood and washed it away. I've fertilized it 6 times if not more and it's still stunted. It won't stop raining here on the coast of NC. Hoping I can get another crop in. I've had to dig potatoes early and throw tomato plants in the woods. We are finally getting a break now. Great video guys, always learn something knew.

Revisiting planting early sweet corn varieties with classic Greg and Travis start @ 26:00 for a laugh. Then, start at the beginning. Yellowstone and Glacial White did fantastic planted side by side for us in S.E. Louisiana last spring 2022. No cross pollination. For ideal germination, be extra patient and wait for ideal soil temperature like they suggest. These two varieties are holding there honey sweetness after pressure canning nine months later.

Good, clear, concise, guidance on corn this week. I know that will be helpful to us all. I'm glad you touched a little on "cross pollination" and that might be a good thing to cover in a future show. It won't take much time to explain it, but I find that it's one thing that confuses gardeners the most. I'm so glad that you include both the Latin genus name and species name of every seed type on the website (maybe include on seed pkts also??).

@@gardeningwithhoss Just a thought. I try to order with the genus/species in mind, if I am planning on planting together with the possibility of saving seed. If I have multiple seed packets of same genus (brassicas and cucurbits come to mind), I'll just write it on the pack to keep me straight. If you explain cross pollination by genus/species on the show, you'll get to use more cards for sure! :) Greg will like that!

I sure do enjoy this podcast, it really is best gardening show I know of to layout things in regular folk terminology. You know I was thinking about the people who ask about cross pollination and wonder if they are worried because they want to save their seeds because if not then it really don't matter due to cross pollination only occurs in the next generation which would be if they were savings seed to plant the next year otherwise it don't matter for the crop that is actually growing. If a home gardener is buying seeds each year and not saving the seeds for next crop then why worry about cross pollination?

Bees can cross pollinate both. In tomatoes it's only about 5% of the time. Not sure about okra. But it can happen. No problem unless of course you're saving/trading/selling seed. It also depends on your bee population. I have 2 varieties of okra I want to save seed from. I'm gonna plant one in April, save seeds, and remove it before I plant the other and it starts making later in the year. Because I don't have alot of seeds of either.

Can you guys speculate on how much container space I might need per 5 lbs of seed potatoes? I won't have any in-ground garden space to give to them, but I ordered a bunch!
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 роки тому
You can figure that one plant would require approx 1 square foot of space. With 5 lbs of seed potatoes, you'd probably need about 20 square feet of space.

So I don’t guess I can plant corn in my little 4x6 raised bed 😂. I tried it last year using square foot gardening method. The corn grew tall and pretty but yield was squat.
@stevefromthegarden1135
@stevefromthegarden1135 3 роки тому
When you have a small bed of corn, you need to hand pollinate. That is the only way to get the corn to fill out. Clip a piece of the tassel and rub it on the silks. The tip silks are the last to form so you have to hit the silks on 2 different days. (at a minimum)

Have you noticed how close farmers are planting corn now compared to 20 years ago, higher yields per acre with less bug and disease pressure with the new generation of hybrids.

I know this week’s episode is focused on corn but I have an onion question. I live in Michigan and I have seed started a long day onion inside for the first time. You guys have said that the bulbing of an onion starts around 14 to 16 hours of sun. If I keep my lights on for 18 hour on and 6 hours off to start all my seeds could that trick my onions into bulbing WAY too early?
@gardeningwithhoss

That could very well happen.

Re: your 20-20-20 fertilizer. Is it only to be used mixed with water or in a drip system, or can it be used dry, sprinkled on the soil?

It works best if you dissolve it in water and apply it in liquid form.

My soil test came back low in nitrogen, and potash naturally and I know what to do for that. I haven't had a garden and worked on my plot in several years for a bad back, but it was also very low in sulfur and copper. What should I add to bring that up, or will the Micro Boost take care of that? Thanks
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss Рік тому
The micro Boost will help. Also get as much organic matter into your soil. We add the below twice a year 1-2 weeks prior to planting. hosstools.com/product/complete-organic-fertilizer/

Thanks. I bought both already in anticipation of my fall crop, also have the 20-20-20 and Chilean Nitrate already. I also put down some cow compost because I have access to it to boost organics. I use to compost straw out of horse stalls in my back field on a large scale. My garden was originally built out of 8 of my 18 yard dump truck loads of that, and it was AWSOME. Everything grew like crazy, but like I said, I haven't done anything to it in several years. Sort of starting over. I do so enjoy you guys on UKposts. I'm there at 4 every morning watching and watching again your videos, so everything sinks into my memory banks. Thanks again.

Did I hear you say that you coukdnt grow sweet corn by field corn. I beleive we are rotating field corn in the back field and the garden is in the back as well. Will this cause issues??
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 роки тому
You can grow them beside one another as long as you stagger the plantings. Plant the sweet corn first, then plant the field corn about 2 weeks later and you'll be fine.

When you talk about a pound of fertilizer, is that is a weighed out pound or 16 ounces of dry fertilizer measured in a measuring cup? I would think weighed out or you would have gave the measurement in cups rather than pounds.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 роки тому
That would be a weighed pound on the 20-20-20 and Chilean Nitrate -- the dry stuff. For the liquid MicroBoost, it would be a liquid cup measurement.

Spinosad is an insecticide, so it's not going to do anything for the smut. But you can mix Liquid Copper (hosstools.com/product/liquid-copper-fungicide/) with the spinosad and that will take care of the smut.
