Craig Mooring Well thank you sir. I appreciate that very much. I’m just a man, so I do have my biases. I do try to limit them though. I try to look at every new tool, regardless of the manufacturer, as objectively as possible. Over the years I felt like reviewers were just pushing products more than giving honest opinions. That is actually why I began reviewing multi tools a little over a year ago. So far, the results have been very positive. I love tools of all kinds and plan on expanding review to eventually try to encompass them all. I appreciate you watching my videos, and most importantly for subscribing.

My girlfriend at the time bought me a wave in 2001. I took it to my first deployment with usmc to Afghanistan in 2004. A Sgt from another platoon "borrowed" it and I never got it back. I harassed him all the way back to the states to replace it and he never did. I have since bought several apparently Gen2. The point is, my original must have been a Gen1. But I don't remember the differences like you are showing...after watching, I could swear I was carrying a Gen2 in fall of 2001...but I'm 40 now so memory isn't what it used to be. GREAT video btw. Despite the narrower main blades of the original version, when a deer accident on a mountain highway led to a big portion of the front quarter and bumper being pulled under the tire when moving, I remembered the Wave saw attachment it took only minuites to remove the damaged body piece to continue the trip - something I couldn't pull off by hand. So, while I appreciate seeing the improvements in newer versions, I was glad that the first version - which I keep in the car for such emergencies - was fully capable of doing the job I needed. Those tools are stiff as heck to open up, though.
@DanielleWhite
@DanielleWhite 4 роки тому
I appreciate this. An original Wave has been my EDC for 20 years. I was debating going to a Wave+ or Surge but with the review don't see a solid reason for my use. I may get the Surge and bits to augment the tool kit on my motorcycle - it's my daily driver and I use it for trips and vacations. It has an OEM tool kit that I wonder if it was someone's idea of a joke. I'm a former dairy farm kid who got all of the field work so appreciate the meaning of "field repair tools.") I'm not going Surge for EDC because I think I'd be unhappy with the extra weight on my belt.
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 4 роки тому
I know quite a few people that will keep the Surge in the glovebox as a car tool. It can be quite heavy to carry for most people. The only thing I don’t like about the original Wave is that the inner tools don’t lock in place. I carried one for many years, and got plenty of use out of it though. Great multi tool that I think has just gotten better over the years.
@DanielleWhite
@DanielleWhite 4 роки тому
I won't disagree with the criticism. Mine happened to be just the right tension/friction that the inner tools weren't too hard to open (though by no means easy) and this seemed to help keep the lack of positive lock from being a problem in my use. I've definitely seen others that were more or less stiff and got into being difficult to use on one or the other side.

Very detailed look at all 3 models, you did a really good job of this. I too, need to find a 1st Generation Wave for my collection. The thing i like most about the 1st Gen, compared to the other 2 Gens, are that all the tools are on it. By that i mean, it doesn't have/require any Bit Kits and/or Bit Extender. Its all there. So its a simple tool that you grab n' go. Even though the Wave+ is my favorite of the 3, i do like the simplicity of the Gen 1. I am in search of a good Leatherman multitool to get my Wife as her first. Something simple, that she doesn't need to remember to keep track of any accessories. Its between the Gen 1 Wave, or the Rebar. I like the ease of access that the Wave has to offer, but im leaning more towards the Rebar, because of the fact that all the tools lock, and i want that safety feature for her. Both would be great options though of course. Long comment lol.
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 5 років тому
Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. Honestly, I think if you want to get your wife a multi tool, the Rebar is an excellent choice. I get what you're saying about not having to keep up with extra accessories. Looking for a tool that is grab and go, and I think the Rebar fits that bill. It depends on what she likes. I actually think the Wingman is an excellent choice for light carry. It has a fairly capable tool set, it's light weight, and it's spring loaded. That feature makes it a great choice for light tasks. In my case, I bought my wife a Wave a couple of years ago for her birthday. A couple of months ago I leant her my Surge for something we were doing around the house. She looked at me and asked my why I didn't get her that one instead. Long story short, I had to buy another Surge. So I guess it depends on the woman. In a couple of years my daughters will be teenagers and I want them to have a multi tool that they will actually use. I am leaning towards the Wingman for them because of the scissors and spring action pliers. I wish they would put a standard blade in it though, I don't care for that half serrated blade. Best of luck on your decision, and thanks again for watching.
@survivalofthefittest409
@survivalofthefittest409 5 років тому
@@txtoolcrib The Wingman is actually a very good idea. The spring-loaded pliers and scissors are something she will definitely like! Plus, she has real small hands, so the spring-loaded option is probably a a big deal for her. Thanks for that! And thats a funny story about your wife. Something similar happened with my wife and my Wave, she likes to use the diamond file on her nails all the time haha, but she ends up giving it back.

Looking at the top my first gen Wave I do see 2 straight grooves on each leg where the fingers of some springy things go, instead of the rounded ends in de video. A kind of brake I think but no locking action of the blades as in the newer generations. So it seems a first-and-a-half generation. When I compare the finish of the Wave it is waaaay beyond the finish of my latest Charge+ which is only different from the newer Waves in the 154CM metal of the main blade and the cutting hook in the serrated blade. The latter looks like the lot is sand-blasted with the pliers crudely brushed where the Wave is entirely smoothly brushed or satinized with bead-blasted parts. Not sure which one I like better but the Wave makes a very satisfying spring assisted snap when closing which the Charge doesn't show so far.

You forgot the plier rests that is supposed to keep the end of the pliers from catching on the inside tools. On Gen 1there are none as they are not neccessary . Early Gen2 had the flap type which once the tool loosened up through frequent use, tended to slam harder against the flap. Metal fatigue occurs and the flap occasionally breaks causing the end of the plier to catch on the inside tools. Later Gen2 and Gen3 such as the ones in your vid have sturdier square rests that can withstand slamming once the tool loosens up. It will be interesting to see the innovative engineering on the Leatherman Frees when they come out!

One thing you didn't cover though was the old pliers open wider than the newer ones. I finally caved and bought a new one this week and the first time I tried to use the pliers (to get a screw top off of a really stuck bottle), but the pliers for the Wave+ wouldn't fit around the cap. However, the old Wave's did. It definitely wasn't the proper application for the tool but disappointing nevertheless. Anyways, you have a fantastic channel, I hope your subscriber count grows to match the quality of your videos!

I have the first and second generation but I prefer the first gen, mostly because it is narrower and lighter than gen 2. I don't like the removeable bits because if it can be removed it can be lost. I've had the gen 1 for 22 years and it has never let me down.

WOAH! wait a minute! This guy is obviously a Leatherman freak. That appears to be the carbon fiber Skeletool with the S30V blade!....EDIT, 154cm...... Thats the one i want. I could be wrong, but, it is unlikely. I am a Leatherman freak. I have an awesome collection including the Wave tools in all 3 generations, as well as a Crunch, multiple Micras, Surge, Charge ALX (the one with 2 screwdriver slots), Charge TTI, Charge Plus TTI (quite expensive the Charge tools), MUT, I also have the 2 versions of the add on screwdriver adapters, the one for Wave, and for original PST (both new in package, never used). And my crowning jewel, an original PST, Marlboro miles edition, new in original box, never used, with new leather sheath, never used. IO also have a dozen other multi tools and collectible high end knives, But the Leathermans are my favorites. And i always carry one on me.

I tell anyone who asks me about multi tools if you’re not a collector and you’re looking for a tool that can handle just about anything that will come up throughout your day to just buy the Surge. Yes it’s heavier but you’re hip carrying it and really won’t notice the weight. At least I don’t notice it. I collect and use multi tools out of all the brands and all the leather man styles anything leather man will be better but the best out of the best would be the Surge. It is the true king of multi tools

The only thing I don't like on the Wave is the scissors. I prefer the Victorinox scissors by far. All other tools are great, especially the can opener. The Leatherman can opener is better than its competitor Victorinox.
@txtoolcrib

Tim Summers I tend to agree with that statement. The scissors on the Wave, while capable, are a bit small for my taste.

I have the original wave, the original Swisstool and the Swisstool X on the wave the scissors are fantastic! Just as good as Victorinox and has a better spring mechanism. I’ve used the original wave everyday for 21yrs and has never let me down ever!! due to its lack of an awl I carry a Farmer for backup but for me Tim Leatherman got it so right with the first wave I looked no further.. perfect!

I have new Wave about 3 month and pliers is very strong and bad to use quickly. I use lubricant but same thing. What can I do else?
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 4 роки тому
It sounds as though you may have a faulty tool. I would get in touch with Leatherman customer service to see about getting it repaired or exchanged. The pliers will often times be a bit stiff initially, but they will break in fairly nicely over the course of about a year or so of use. It sounds like yours may be a bit harder to open than should be expected.

Try the used market, sometimes pawn shops have a good price on new or newer tools. I bought a black oxide NIB Rebar for 50.00, MSRP is 70.00. it was tight at first some oil and breaking in made it a little looser.

Well, when it comes to multi tools, it is a matter of opinion as to which is better. Personally, I believe the later generations are a bit better because they offer inside locking tools and the bit exchanger. Original Wave was a great multi tool though, no doubt.
