I am Praveen Vettiyattil, inventor of this Expandable Flood Barrier FAQs 1) What if flood water enters indoor through drainage/septic pipes? Answer: Fix ball valves on the outdoor side of drainage/septic pipes and close then during a developing flood. 2) Will the walls collapse at 2.5 feet high flood? Answer: Normal residential brick walls wouldn't collapse upto five feet of flood. 3) Will the floor cave in? Answer: 90% of floods are below 2.5 height above the flood. Water could leak in through the floor if flood height is above 2.5 feet above the floor, but this inleak would be small and could be pumped out using a diesel/petrol powered pump or could be mechanically drained out. By the time flood water passes through the minutes holes (0.1mm dia) and infinite bends on the thick ground soil to reach below the floor, a lot of pressure is lost. This is why water inleak through the floor would be manageably small. Because a small amount of water will leak through floor at above 2.5 feet flood, there will be no pressure built up below the flood and thus the floor wouldn't cave in. 4) Can I use the toilet in my house during flood Answer: Flood resistant toilets and Floating toilets are available to buy and install.

The larger the volume of water (width or depth), the heavier the weight of water putting pressure on a barrier. 1 cubic meter of water weighs a ton. With respect, the volume of water tested is miniscule to an extensive flooding event (eg 500m across) and corresponding weight increase. I'd like to see that barrier stop the water under those conditions.

I subscribed to this channel, because I probably saw something interesting. However this "invention" in my oppinion is simply useless. Why? - You need all door frames to be more or less a couple inches within designed parameters (this doesn't happen too often, especially in poor areas). - It's mechanically expanded rubber sheet. Nothing miraculous about it. It's using door frame and wall strength to hold on to. If you go in panic mode (like say during a flood, when your life depends on your fast action), you can destroy your door frame, even risking the wall collapse. - You get just a specific height. What if water goes higher? You have no idea how high will be the flood. - With all that effort, why don't simply built the water tightening system in your door? Why do you need just a half of your doors protected? Ask flood to go below windows height? - There are systems of water tightening doors used in water gates for transversing lakes and rivers. Those work just by wood to wood contact and water pressure tightening. Those systems are used in my country for hundreds of years. - You can have a much simpler and more versatile system if you use just a wood plate with only a rubber gasket around it and and expanding bar to fix it in a door frame in such way, that water pushing from the outside would seal the plate to a door frame. I have such expanding bar in my doors to practice pullups. And it probably costs pennies comparing to all mechanical system covered in a rubber. You can even make those things modular - 2 or 3 plates for one door for complete coverage. But then you should have such set for your windows too. And this is where much simpler and cheaper solutions will beat this thing totally. And those are just a few of problems I see at first glance. Engineering is amazing, but if your goal in mind is to make something useful for a lot of people, it should be cheap, very easy to use and versatile. This invention looks like "it costs a lot to manufacture, it can destroy your door frame and it will only protect you untill your windows are flooded". I don't wand to discourage any inventors. I love when people are designing solutions to their everyday problems. But this thing shows how many view angles on this problem were completly omitted. Now when I thought for a few minutes about the problem, I got a different idea which would require a bit of manufacturing. A groove around doors and an air pressure expanding tube sitting in a groove. I bet India has a lot of bikes. So probably there is a lot of discarded, but still usable tires and bicycle inner tubes. Such inflatable seal can be made in a day or two, using discarded bicycle tires, with basic tools and a bit of a rubber glue. For extra protection of the expanding seal, you can just nail additional rubber ribbon around doors. Then during a flood, someone would simply take a bicycle pump and seal those doors in a few minutes. After installation, you need only to hang a bicycle pump near your doors and this system can be primed at any time, even with a panic mode on. I showed two alternative solutions where material is easily accessible, anyone with some basic mechanical skills and a few basic tools can make it in a couple days. But I won't make a production of this and I won't earn anything.🤣 Or maybe? There are flood areas in my country. I kind of liked that rubber seal around doors 🤪 [Edit] Even simpler solution based on water locks. Outside opening doors. Wooden frame shaped like a cut off top pyramid, with fitted frame and a simple rubber gasket around it. The more water is outside, the tighter the seal becomes. No needs for any other action than just closing the door. Any woodworker would be able to make such doors.
