Great video Stu. Just a suggestion for any city slickers like me who like to get out hunting but don't get much chance to, do some service shooting with your local service rifle club, some snap and rapid shooting over the 3 positions (standing at 100m, sitting at 200m and prone at 300m). Good practice for in the field where you get very limited shot times. Cheers!

A useful video. I am impressed that you have simple, not too expensive, kit that you have become very used to working with. Also, is the reticle on your Burris Fullfield II Scope the Plex (no mill dots) or the Ballistic Plex (with mil dots) ?
@HuntingwithStu
@HuntingwithStu 4 роки тому
Thanks mate yes these firearms are stock standard with the 30/30 over 40 years old and straight up open sights. The 30/06 is also pretty old as I bought it brand new in 1992. The scope has normal cross hairs with no mil dots mate. I think a lot of people can get carried away with tech and add on stuff but in the end one still needs to know how to shoot holding off or leading running targets. So long as I can hit a target size of a take away coffee lid at around 30m (pretty easy) on the run out to 200m (very hard) well then that is all the skill i need to do what I do.
@molecatcher3383
@molecatcher3383 4 роки тому
@@HuntingwithStu Thanks Stu, I shoot in Scotland but usually from quad sticks and only when the animals are standing still. I am hugely impressed the way you can shoot off-hand at moving a target, sometimes from a moving quad-bike or canoe. You could get a job in a circus. I suspected that you would have the normal cross hair sight, it fits in with a keep it simple philosophy. Keep making the vids, they are some of the best.

Yes mate it is all about the gaps between the pellets. The large gap between big pellets are no good. However, the more pellets like 27 pellet SSGs from Black hawk ammo there is minimal gaps yet still a big pellet. Yes actually the pig is the fastest animal to gain their max speed from a standing start than any other animal, bit of trivia mate.

@outlawtanker1283
@outlawtanker1283 5 років тому
Depends if they have never shot any type of gun you would prolly be better off with a .22cal but if you want one a little bit bigger for pigs a 243 would be a a perfect gun for them both of those are wonderful guns.
@CrazyDog651
@CrazyDog651 5 років тому
I'll speak from personal experience as I'm a Junior, its really up to how tough your son is. If he not the biggest fella i have seen people get by with a .223 or even 7.62x39 with the 7.62 there's a bit more punch on the shooter but it hits harder as well. If hes a bit more on the bigger side .308 or .270 is away great or even a straight pull 12 gauge. But like what a lot of others say its personal preference if you know some guys ask them if your son could have a shot with their guns and see what he likes or better yet go to a gun shop and have a poke around. Hope this helps have a good one.

Hey Stu. Can you elaborate a bit more on the 12 Gauge loads that you use. As to shy don't you find the 000 or 00 buck less suitable. Didn't imagine that the BB load could penetate the hogs
@HuntingwithStu
@HuntingwithStu 5 років тому
The OO 9 pellet SGs have too big a gap between pellets when the pig is out past 30m. The OOO or 18 pellet SGs are better. However, the Winchester Defender shells have a solid and 3 x ball bearings which hit hard. We do use a type of BB which work well and they are the ELEY AAA Alphamax game loads.
@ralstonraz
@ralstonraz 5 років тому
@@HuntingwithStu Thanks Stu. Till what range are the 000 or 18 pellets effective?
@HuntingwithStu
@HuntingwithStu 5 років тому
Depends largely on the shotgun used as some shotties especially longer barrel models can reach out further than short barrel models and if you have a tight choke to keep the pattern tight then 60 to 80m is max. My max range with the Adler is around 30 to 40m with the best range for a kill shot is point blank out to 20m.

hey stu, what did you mean when you said the 30-30 was limited to 100m shots? I'm looking to getting into pigging and I was wondering if this calibre is right for me?
@HuntingwithStu
@HuntingwithStu 5 років тому
What I mean't mate is that they preform the best out to that distance. However, the 30/30 cal is very similar to the military 303 which is renowned for long range shooting. This is because the 303 is a long barreled rifle whereas the 30/30 is a short barrel carbine.

Thanks Stu great vid mate, a guy I used to go hunting with, taught me to practise snap shooting pigs, to close my eyes, through out your arm and point my finger as if I was pointing the gun and when you open your eyes you should be looking straight down the full length of your finger as if your looking down the barrel every single time and this has held me in good stead all my hunting life. I had a 444 marlin for a few years and boy o boy did that bastard ventilate pigs, it would literally sieve the guts of the pig through the rib cage and blow a hole out the other side almost big enough to stick ya head in !!
