You can dissolve steel out of aluminium using alum powder mixed in water. It's not a fast process, but is effective. Works in brass and other non -ferrous alloys too.

That ESC has an Input Voltage - 4-10 Cells (4.8 - 12 VDC).

I thought about that, and I am going back to a 3S, BUT, that can't be the issue. A fully charged 10cell NiMh or SLA is over 14V and I was running a depleted LiPo pack (just for a quick test, so I didn't charge it up prior) that was 14.4V. 0.4V should not have exploded the ESC.

@@RCSubGuyA fully charged 14.4v lipo can charge up to 16.8v. but it is odd that the Neg connector melted off. So I figure a short some where or the ESC had a defect. As that brand has had some bad batches from time to time.
