📜 History of Hunting The Pride of Germany: The Bismarck, Part 1
During World War II, the Bismarck was the pride of the German navy - and the nightmare of Great Britain. It was enormous, overpowered, and a constant threat to the seas. So when they got word that the Bismarck had mobilized, the British raced to stop it.

You seem like a nice person. Here is a chocolate cake recipe for you: Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking powder 1½ teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon espresso powder 1 cup milk, buttermilk, almond, or coconut milk ½ cup vegetable, canola oil, or melted coconut oil 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup boiling water Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe Instructions Preheat oven to 350º F. Prepare two 9-inch cake pans by spraying with baking spray or buttering and lightly flouring. For the chocolate cake: Add flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt and espresso powder to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk through to combine or, using your paddle attachment, stir through flour mixture until combined well. Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to flour mixture and mix together on medium speed until well combined. Reduce speed and carefully add boiling water to the cake batter until well combined. Distribute cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center of the chocolate cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes, remove from the pan and cool completely. Frost cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human
@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human 2 роки тому
A lot of the best fiction is based on history anyway. Game of Thrones, for example. So much borrowed from the war of the roses, and the Germanic courts of 1800's Europe. Anyway, I agree. History is often more interesting - and stranger - than fiction. And I get a bigger thrill reading about a real person who did something heroic, than I do reading about Aragorn doing something heroic, and I do love Lord of the Rings.

For those in the comment section bickering about Bismarck's status as the world's largest battleship: When she was sunk, in May 1941, she WAS the largest and most powerful operational battleship in the world. Some others had a greater displacement, larger guns, or longer physical dimensions, but none exceeded her in more than any single category and she was far and away the most generally capable battleship design in service in 1941. Yamato and Musashi would obviously take all of Bismarck's titles away from her, but neither had yet been completed in May 1941, despite Yamato having been launched several months earlier. British and American ships exceeding her size and power would come along as well, but not for several years. Tirpitz lived long enough to be outclassed. Bismarck didn't.

The Hood was a Battlecruiser and while its belt armour was increased to an adequate level when it was still on the construction yard following Jutland (1916) by ww2 the Hood was pretty much outdated and thanks to here thin deck armour was extremely vulnerable to plunging fire that was extremely rare in ww1 but thanks to improvement in ship artillery and fire control ranging became a real serious threat to naval warships.

howard baxter Only because Iowa was never used for her intended purpose (which was surface action against enemy capital ships that may attempt to attack American carriers). Iowa sank only one ship during her entire career, a mere training cruiser, and even than that ship had to be spared from aircraft carriers just so Iowa’s crew could get some experience. That’s a pathetic combat record for a ship specifically built to kill other capital ships. As with the Yamato-class, Iowa was obsolete even before being launched due to the rise of airpower, and despite being the most advanced of the end-generation battleships, she proved to be a colossal waste of resources that shouldn’t even have been built in the first place. Surviving a war when you never actually did your job isn’t really impressive.

The Bismark was the fastest ship that ever sailed the seas On her decks were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees
@mrfried
@mrfried 7 років тому
The thing is the opening verse was wrong. Hood was longer than Bismarck, the Nelson Class had 16 inch guns, making them have the biggest guns (Hood had the same calibre guns) and when she was built, Hood was faster, but when she started to undergo modernisation that speed did decrease. So the irony is that Hood actually either matched or beat Bismarck in those aspects as sung in the opening verse. The tragedy of the Hood however was that the RN knew that she lacked armour, they knew her weaknesses and had drawn plans that predicted the kind of shot that sank her. They knew exactly how she would meet her fate and they knew how it could be avoided and they planned modernisations that would have increased her armour all over, making it comparative to Renown and the Queen Elizabeth Class. However her modernisations had kept being delayed and were pushed back to 1942, why? Because the RN felt that it served them far better to keep her doing stupid tours of the world and push her beyond her limits, which meant that she was in a poor state by the time she went to face the Bismarck (something that should have never have happened as Battlecruisers weren't designed to square off against Battleships, this was part of their design and a lesson that was then hard learned at Jutland) and they paid the price because someone high up in the RN was an incompetent.

The Internet is saying the Yamato's sister ship "Musashi" was the largest ship ever built, just barely squeaking past it's sister. But I think we're calling the Bismarck the "largest" for this series due to it being, at the time, the largest battleship on Earth.
@braith117
@braith117 7 років тому
Musashi and Yamato were a bit different. Yamato was built as a gunboat while Musashi, build as a flagship, had 2 less secondary turrets to accommodate her more extensive command and control facilities.
@Schnittertm1
@Schnittertm1 6 років тому
Even then it would be wrong, as Bismarcks sister ship Tirpitz also had been commissioned several months by the time Bismarck was sunk and it was the same size bulk wise, but a bit heavier. If we go by ships launched and undergoing fitting and sea trials, then both Yamato and Musashi would qualify, as they had both been launched in 1940, though it would take until December 1941 until Yamato finished fitting and sea trials and until the beginning of 1942 for Musashi to complete this stage and be commissioned. Anyway, the largest commissioned battleship at the time of Bismarcks sinking was its sister ship, the Tirpitz, not by much, but it was.
@VRichardsn
@VRichardsn 6 років тому
Giving Extra History the benefit of the doubt, the Bismarck was the largest warship in the world in early 1941, because the Yamato wasn´t completed yet (it would be comissioned in late 1941) Although if we get picky, we can say by the stage reached by Yamato´s construction in early 1941 it already surpassed the Bismarck, being so heavy.

Unborn Something that gets trounced around repeatedly... but is incorrect. The Germans knew exactly what aircraft the Fleet Air Arm used (hell the German navy was set to use similar biplanes as torpedo bombers for the Graf Zeppelin). It would seem logical they tailor their AA firecontrol systems to those. Now given the Bismarcks AA could engage targets like Blimps as well, it could certinaly even go lower. Why Bismarcks AA didn't hit anything was because it was outdated. Its main rear AA fire control director wasn't stabilised. Making fire-control outputs to the guns useless in the bad weather. This bad weather also put quite a bit of spray over the decks making it impossible the guns (in bad mounts) to see let alone hit anything anyway.

Side note: Despite the fog and weather, the Bismark always knew it was being shadowed by the British ships. It had been equipped with a system that detected the radar signals at a range longer than the effective range of the British Radar.
@1993Crag
@1993Crag 7 років тому
That isn't saying much. Most radar receivers at the time could detect signals at a longer effective range then what was been sent out and been received by a target.

You rarely see a sponsored video with such likes/dislikes rate, the Extra Credits team know how to do proper paid content. Keep it up!
@pretzelbomb6105
@pretzelbomb6105 6 років тому
Stoptherock they also have the advantage of their sponsored content not feeling shoehorned in. Whenever a gaming channel starts talking about skillshare or a comedy channel mentions audible, it feels tacked on and makes me dislike the product a bit because of it. This isn’t just a “Buy the way, play WoWarships” tacked onto the end of an unrelated video, but an entire series on a very interesting topic sponsored by a related product. I hope we see a lot more in the way of sponsorships from companies based around history, they’ve already brought us the Bismarck Hunt, Hiawatha, and Berlin Airlift episodes, so I can’t wait for what comes next.

we need to remember that the Bismark was the largest ship before the Yamato and the Missouri came along. But it wasn't even the biggest in the German fleet. the Tirpitz was and the Tirpitz was already in the Atlantic.. And frankly the disabling of the Tirpitz was one hell of a story. She wasn't sunk but a British commando operation basically made her unrepairable and thus heavily neutered. I would love to see an extra history on Operation Chariot also known as The Greatest Raid of All Time.
@nicholasloremann4741

Wait wasnt Bismarck larger than Tirpitz? And Yamato was easly sunk by airplanes
@milamber319

Skystrikr yes the tirpitz was the second ship made and was slightly larger (or at least more heavily layden) than the bismark. And had a few improvements thrown in.

when i said it was already in the atlantic i meant it was that it was already in the atlantic when they went after it. as in it was already to late to hold it in.

In may of 1941, the war had just begun. The Germans had the biggest ship, that had the biggest guns. The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the sea. On her decks were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees. Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship, the Hood. And every British seaman he knew and understood. They had to sink the Bismarck, the terror of the sea. Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees. We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss. We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. Yeah hit the decks a runnin', boys and spin those guns around. When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down. The Hood found the Bismarck and on that fatal day. The Bismarck started firing fifteen miles away. We gotta sink the Bismarck was the battle sound. But when the smoke had cleared away the mighty Hood went down. For six long days and weary nights, they tried to find her trail. Churchill told the people "put every ship to sail." Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be. We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea. We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss. We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. Yeah hit the decks a runnin', boys and spin those guns around. When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down. The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the morning sun. Ten hours away from homeland the Bismarck made its run. The Admiral of the British fleet said turn those bows around. We found that German battleship and we're gonna cut her down. The British guns were aimed and the shells were coming fast. The first shell hit the Bismarck they knew she couldn't last. That mighty German battleship is just a memory. "Sink the Bismarck" was the battle cry that shook the seven seas. We found the German battleship t'was makin' such a fuss. We had to sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. We hit the deck a runnin' and we and spun those guns around, yeah. We found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down. We found the German battleship t'was makin' such a fuss. We had to sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. We hit the deck a runnin' and we and spun those guns around, yeah.
