From his his MoH citation: Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base Dakota when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. Without hesitation, and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting Sgt. Salvatore Giunta some years back at a hockey game here in No. Colorado. As a MoH recipient, he was the home teams guest of honor, and was introduced mid-ice. After the game, and as we were leaving, a mutual friend was with Sgt. Giunta and introduced me. Humbleness appears to be the hallmark of these gentlemen who wear the medal. A more humble, down to earth man I had never met. Sometime later, I ran into my friend that had introduced us. True, but that's because these medals are for outstanding performance (for lack of a better word, trust me I tried to find one). Compared to us, theyre all just on another level, but for them, putting their life on the line is what the job is. So to earn one you have to be a cut above the creme de la creme

My grandfather was one of five immigrant boys, all drafted at the beginning of WWII. He stormed Normandy. Earned a purple heart at the Battle of the Bulge. Miraculously, all five boys made it back home. It is in their name and in the honor of those who did not make it home that this 21yr old served his country and nearly lost his life. Kids today sacrifice very little. I fear that they do not value the fact that this nation's freedom has been ensured because of those who have. Bravo Zulu, soldier.

God bless the US Marine Corps for forming a young man like this, and God bless him and his family for raising such a man. This was a painful privilege to watch. How they have been betrayed since these days of heroism. US forces and the UK forces - the land of my birth. What was this heroism for? Our young fight and suffer, the politicians turn and run.
