It's just the ability to copy power used by others. So the reason that bf used fire power in the first place is that Witty used fire power on bf and counterattacked the copy with 'Echo' power. Great reaction! Also, for any who wonder, some of abilities. Updike is no cloud, but hairy. The “ballistic” effect caused a boost at the cost of sanity and a berserk stage. As noted, Updike’s ability is kinda the reason who made the place, he can see the emotions, powers, and inner forces.

Answering a few questions: Unmasking Light allows Updike to see your true intentions and anything that was changed about you by force, whether or not you knew about the change. And in return Boyfriend gets to echo this power to see what Updike is hiding. And as you could see, he's burnt out, absolutely fed up with his job, but he knows he can't stop now... Not until he gets an actual mental breakdown. Also there's a mod and it has a bad ending where Whitty decides to ditch Updike and let him fall to his death while he makes his escape.
