Denmark had to extend the life of these diesels, because Italy had frauded the Danish government of a high-speed train deal that was fully paid for, but never delivered, and in a good family (and with the Italian train mafia as opponents) there was no dispute and no return of the failed Ansaldo trains. Denmark had to place a completely new order for high-speed trains at ALSTOM in France, and pay again - can you believe it, true story! The Class ME diesels are magnificient and autonomous, and nothing powered on windmills will ever be able to compete on anything else than feel-good and political correctness, sucking its power from overhead copper wires, dug out of african mines by children. Denmark has not been able to electrify as of yet, because the country has dragged its feet for 50 years and not implemented Nuclear power, which enabled the Swedish transition, and have no access to hydro-electric power that enabled the Norwegian transition. Denmark is a ressourceless country, but with many feel-good people ressources who have opinions about a lot, except paying themselves.

Lol. They're much much older, but the BR 120 which the Eurosprinter is based on is from around the same period. Siemens-Alstom joint venture from the late 90's. The DSB Litra SA and Litra SE. They're the fourth generation of S-Train rolling stock, and they're extremely wide inside due to the bugle at the middle. They actually overhang the platform edge. They function as a hybrid metro/suburban line, with 2 minute headways on the central stretch and 5-10 minute headways on the outer branches.
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 2 роки тому
As someone else pointed out they're the Copenhagen S trains. The network essentially acts as a regional subway in and around Copenhagen, similarly to the S bahns in Hamburg and Berlin, and the RER in Paris. The trains themselves are the 4th generation of rolling stock on the system and was built between 1996 and 2007 in a consortium between Siemens, and Linke Hoffman Busch (now part of Alstom). They're alright trains but DSB is horrible at maintaining them. They're often covered in graffiti, its dirty and has tags everywhere on doors and walls inside, and I've even encountered water leaking through the roof in heavy rain.

I would love to be proved wrong, but I have the impression that western European railways have a higher percentage of routes that are electrified than in the UK. I know it's expensive to electrify routes and that it is the main routes that are electrified, leaving "branch" lines to be served by diesel locos. But electric locos are the way to go. It was a shame the journey was so short because there wasn't as much scenery to see as I would have liked.
@Skate771parts
@Skate771parts 2 роки тому
Denmark was supposed to have all its main lines electrified in the 90’a but was halted by politicians thinking it was unnecessary. As of today not that many main lines are electrified but will be before 2030. Hope that explains Denmark situation somehow.
@wasmic5z
@wasmic5z 2 роки тому
Electrification is, indeed, pretty great in countries like Germany and Sweden. But in Denmark, it's sadly abysmal (but getting better, finally). Aside from the suburban trains of Copenhagen which run on entirely separate tracks, the only electric line was, for a long time, the mainline between Padborg on the German border, to Copenhagen and Elsinore (where the trains were loaded onto a ship for a short crossing to Sweden). So basically, the only trains running electric were the international trains, the Intercity trains from Copenhagen to Odense (and Sønderborg, but that's a much smaller city), and the regional/commuter trains between Copenhagen and either Elsinore or cities that were located on the line towards Odense. Even now, the second biggest city in Denmark, Aarhus, has not had its railway electrified yet. But they did start a big electrification project, so in ten years, all intercity trains will be electric, and many of the regional lines will be too. All double-tracked lines will be electrified. All the local railways and some of the less-used regional railways will be made battery-electric instead, with power cables only on short sections and at certain stations.

Ever since the end of 2019 the train service has been rerouted over the mainland in Jutland, taking a Waluigi L shape. This is so the service is more reliable as the rail links to and from the ferry harbours is being extensively upgraded ahead of the upcoming Fehmarn tunnel. After its opened though then trains should regularly be travelling at 200km/h all the way over the corridor, over the 120km/h+ferry that was previously the norm
@wasmic5z
@wasmic5z 2 роки тому
The Copenhagen-Hamburg train used to go in a ferry, but it stopped a few years back, due to reconstruction of the line to Rødbyhavn in preparation for the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, a tunnel that will cut the travel time between Hamburg and Copenhagen from about 5½ hours by train to about 2½ hours. On top of that, regional railways are being upgraded from 120 km/h to 200 km/h in order to achieve this massive time saving. Until the tunnel opens in 2029, the trains are running via Jutland and Funen instead - using the Great Belt Tunnel and Great Belt Low Bridge from Zealand to Funen and the much less impressive Little Belt Bridge from Funen to Jutland. The trains used to also go on a ferry between Zealand and Funen, but that stopped when the Great Belt Fixed Link opened in 1997.

Yes, it's an expensive country, but it's got nothing on Norway or Switzerland!

Yup. DSB originally leased them as a temporary measure until the IC4 trains were ready to replace the older IC3 trains, displacing them onto regional services to replace old push pull trains powered by these locomotives... Now the IC4 never did become ready, Ansaldo Breda scammed us, and DSB bought them as they didn't have that much of a different choice.

Why are you writing “Denmarks last diesel locomotive”? It is not the last. It will run more, but not as DSB. In the furture as a fright locomotive. And you forget that DB Cargo also have diesellocomotives in Denmark 😉

I don't understand these graffiti 'artists'. If they wish to advertise their lower brain capacity why don't they just get their forehead tattooed? Comprehensive report as always - thank you.

It's actually illegal to get your face, neck or hands tattooed in Denmark. Obviously you can get it done in another country and be fine.
