In this episode of The Larry Arnn Show, Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn interviews classicist and military historian Victor Davis Hanson. The two discuss Hanson’s life growing up on his family farm, how he began to study the classics, and his insight into the works of Aristophanes and Thucydides. Later, Hanson speaks on the nature of warfare, the death of citizenship, and his prescription for getting America out of its current mess. This interview was conducted on September 8, 2023.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

@@dutchreagan3676 Yes, to that! I doubt Democrats would listen, but if VDH and Thomas Sowell and intellects like them were elevated to Presidential Advisors, we would be in such a better place. They have such wisdom and unique perspectives based firmly in historical knowledge that they freely give yet goes ignored by our policy makers. Dr. Sowell went so far to state he no longer testifies in Congress for the simple reason that no one listens. Indeed, in his first stint in government at the Labor Department, he debunked the minimum wage and his supervisors chose the myth over facts and reality. I think he brilliantly and simply stated that the true minimum wage was $0 ... unemployed.

It’s difficult to get a college education like this man has without coming from a wealthy family or end up in debt for most of your adult life.People his age could work a part time job and pay for college
@jefferytokarsky1930
@jefferytokarsky1930 Місяць тому
@@suzannecooper5323 Mostly true ... savings before, part time during school, summer jobs, an internship, some help from the folks, and 6 grand loans for an engineering degree at a state school. You have to commend the federal government for their efforts at making higher education “affordable” and convincing kids they had to go to college to get a good job. The few times I go back to go back, I get lost for all the new buildings and the ones tore down and rebuilt. Many of the dorms, which used to be spartan are pretty comfortable. The cafeterias and food is much better. They’ve added several majors we didn’t have back then. I read that our university spends $12 million a year on DEI administrators alone. Minorities and women are encouraged to go to college with grants and scholarships, and they upped the scholarships for women’s sports to equal the men’s. The rest have to take out loans to compensate for the higher tuition ... and for Spring break. What I’m saying is that the money government pumped into colleges, directly and indirectly, didn’t all go for a better education and certainly didn’t make education affordable. Our tax dollars at work.

I've probably watched more videos and listened to more podcasts of Victor Davis Hanson than of any other person on the internet. I truly admire and enjoy his teaching style and his vast knowledge of history and of current culture. I smiled when he mentioned repairing the outbuildings on his farm. Like Dr. Hanson, I grew up working on farms. My family was from Oklahoma and were part of the Okie diaspora that he has mentioned in some of his interviews. We worked mostly in Arizona vegetable and cotton fields and for about a year we worked in California near Bakersfield. My Dad was a great mechanic and worked on farm equipment in the off season to feed the family. I hope that Dr. Hanson continues to educate and inspire his viewers and listeners for many years to come. I've been truly blessed for having read his books, taken his classes on the Second World Wars and on The Dying Citizen from Hillsdale's online school. I highly recommend them all.

The farmer is the most underrated gambler of all time, because they live on gambling that their crop will get enough rain, enough sun, and enough good weather to pull in a considerable yield of the crops they harvest. Sounds simple, but the science behind it, coupled with all the unpredictable factors, is truly an amazing profession. Two of my friends are farmers, and just their calculations of the fertilizers the types and taking measurements of rhe health of the soil. It's crazy how in depth it is.

Wow, I had lunch once with the Australian historian, Geoffrey Blainey that Victor mentioned. Having worked in publishing for nearly 40 years, I've met many authors but Blainey was a stand-out. Instead of speaking a single word about himself, or his work, he spent the entire two hours enticing our family histories from our names and a few questions about where we were born. He is still living, (93) and I remember him from that one meeting as a prince of men.

I know nothing of farming but always appreciate the life lessons VDH teaches us about farming. When he talks about the unpredictability of farming and the things out of the farmer’s control that teaches a kind of humility, I thought of little house on the prairie. One scene in particular is of father Ingalls getting ready to harvest and sell his seasons work at the market, only to have his crops destroyed in a bad rain storm. He walks inside to tell his family. Michael Landon captures that humility perfectly on his face in that scene. Though devastated, he hugs his family and still thanks God for his blessings and gets back to work. He wasn’t looking for anyone to blame (and certainly not looking for a government handout). They were grounded in reality much more than we are today.

You both are empathical persons. You are honest and authentic. This talk made my day. This truth would have banned You from the public conversation in Germany and many other european ciuntries, for life. The government would press publishers not to publicize Your books. Look at the former head of the german "Verfassungsschutz" Dr. H. G. Maaßen, a formerly well recognized author on german law and constitution. He wrote the current immigration laws and criticized the breach of the rule of law. Or Thilo Sarrazin, the "father" of the new german Mark, after reunification. Bub, here is the deal. Farming is hard work. Most people can't do it. Even so, if a person has some land, almost anyone can raise fruit and nut trees. If you missed your chance last season, we are almost there for the 2024 tree planting season. I help someone manage a fruit tree orchard and have some fruit tree experience over the last 17 years. I'm no expert by any means, but I have experience with nearly 50 varieties of fruit trees. You know, even if you got fruit trees...they are not permanent. An orchard is continually losing trees. If you wait to find this out, you will be many years behind from where you could be. If disease or animals don't get your fruit trees, a windstorm may uproot, or lightning may split the tree in two. You have to be proactive and not reactive. In other words, you are never finished with your orchard...you keep planting fruit and nut trees forever and ever...even after you plant the bulk of your orchard and think you are done. There is no time to lose with any of this. Some trees may take a decade to produce meaningfully...and then they die. Some of you may not have the right disposition to grow gardens. But most anyone can grow fruit trees. Once trees are established, they generally don't need watering unless there is a massive drought. The trees find their own water. But we are talking temperate climates, not the Mojave desert. I gave up my garden after 12 years. To do gardens right you need to be a slave to them. I don't like being a slave to them. But I am successful with fruit trees...as long as you do not require perfect fruit that needs spraying and chemicals. That is where I draw the line. If a fruit tree can't produce as-is, with only water, and some fertilizer to start out...then it gets cut down and another tree takes its place. If your fruit trees won't do well unless you have tons of sprays, what will you do in SHTFF when you can't get the sprays? And really, I like organic produce and not eating food loaded with poisons. Try to buy older trees that are more developed. Smallish, bare root trees are the worst to buy if you are in a hurry. You have rust, black knot, borers, rabbits can girdle the trees and deer can get a hard-on for your tree and rub it to death. Squirrels are a massive problem unless you have a large orchard of the same trees that produce at the same time and can feed the squirrels and you. Squirrels can strip your fruit tree of all the fruit before it even ripens! And besides squirrels, their little relative, the chipmunk is a big problem with fruit trees. They live in long burrows and have big families. They can start stripping a peach tree before the peaches are as big as a grape. And they also love the fully ripened fruits...it just does not matter to them. You can trap them & poison them. Whatever you do...get rid of them! To kill squirrels / chipmunks, forget BB guns...get the green rat poison blocks and zip tie a few of them to the trees. They will decimate the squirrel population for that season and scale it back some for the next as well. You can buy small traps that kill chipmunks. You can also put a small chunk of the rat poison near their burrow opening. If you get lucky they will bring the block into their burrow for the family to feast on. Just don't use full blocks, cut it into thirds so the little chipmunk can handle it. If you have animals that may eat the poison, put the poison in the burrow or use a bait station. I like the poison near the opening because I can easily see the eating action. Once the blocks stop being brought into the burrow, you fill the burrow up. If the burrow is dug out again, you repeat the process until it is not dug open again. No pets around here, so this baiting technique is not an issue with me. Anyway, back to the trees... One European Green Gage plum took a decade to produce a meaningful crop...then it got black knot and was done for. After that, the rest of the 7 varieties of plums ALL got black knot and had to be cut down within 2 years. Santa Rosa and Japanese Shiroplum are 2 nice plums to grow. But wet and humid Z6 can cause lots of disease problems with fruit trees and plums are one of them. But, it takes time to find out what works best in your zone. Time you don't have. Same thing with an Empire Apple tree. It took over a decade to produce a decent crop. Wonderful apples, then it got a borer and died. A big, beautiful apple tree suddenly loses all its leaves as well as the crop that was set to grow that season. It is heartbreaking. Some trees are labelled wrong and not the right cultivar. Some fruit trees produce low quality fruit...even though the label shows the most delicious looking fruit. A trend lately with our changing climate is some trees are blooming early, then a frost hits and boom...the entire fruit crop is ruined for that season. If you don't grow enough cherries, the birds will strip one or two cherry trees clean before the cherries can ripen. In other words, you have to plant lots of cherry trees that produce at the same time to feed the birds and yourself. One of the best, reliable and heavy producers with fruit trees are the Asian pear trees. Not all varieties are winners, but Olympic aka Korean Giant is good along with Raja Asian pear - they are 2 of the best. I can say that after 17 years of working with 5 varieties of Asian pears. When planting pears, try to get varieties resistant to fire blight. Depends on the local, but fire blight can be a big problem with pears. Belle of Georgia is a nice white peach. Red Haven is a great yellow peach. But check the chill hours needed for the peach tree. Some trees only produce crops biennial aka every other year. The way you find that out, many times, is only after a few years of growing. When setting up an orchard you need to plan if you want the crops to come in all at once for making preserves / canning or do you want the fruit crops staggered with early, medium and late harvest varieties. You may need a pollinator tree to produce a crop for certain trees...study it up. Some are self-pollinating, others are not. And you need to see which trees are appropriate pollinators. One tree won't always pollinate another tree if they bloom too far apart. Lots to think about and no time to waste. If you want to produce a crop into early winter / late fall...get a persimmon tree or 3. Jiro, Nakita's Gift, Hachiya and lots of other varieties. But check your zones, some are not very cold hardy. Not much time left...we all have eyes to see what is coming. Plant your fruit and nut trees while you can.
