Converting a lateral file cabinet to a rolling tool chest.
I didn't realize how cheap full extension slides have become and I ordered a set from Amazon to swap out the roller ones I used.
FULL extension drawer slides I needed 16inch for my 18" depth cabinet
2 PAIR(4) approx $8 a set: amzn.to/2NYl5vb
6 PAIR(12) approx $6 a set: amzn.to/2XlIV73
10 PAIR(20) approx $5 a set: amzn.to/37d8cEN
DIAMOND cut off blades for angle grinders: amzn.to/37eyS8f
Makita Cordless Angle Grinder(THIS THING ROCKS!): amzn.to/37aeO6V
These are links that I may or may not make a few pennies on if you order anything from Amazon.

Deep file cabinets like that are good for bulky tools that come in cases. They won't take up space in your main box that way and are protected from dirt. And you could lock them up. Good job on adding a drawer! Looks good 👍
@sixtyfiveford

I used to really like those plastic cases. These days they don't want to give out those cases and tools come with bags. I have a few of those plastic cases I've cut the guts out of and use for tool boxes that go into the trunks of vehicles.

I pick up those cases whenever I can. Yard sales, garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, etc... Customized the insides and they are Amazing for holding different tools and look very innocuous when transporting personal protection devises to and from the practice-range...

I did the same thing. I actually have 5 - 5 drawer deep heavy duty filing cabinets stacked side by side. Mine are loaded up with heavy machine tools, drill indexes, reamers, lathe chucks, etc... The commercial duty file cabinets are built super strong with full extension heavy duty drawer slides. I paid $100 for all 5. Best money I've spent in years.

When I need to bend sheet metal like that , I found that I can drop by one of the companies in town that makes "ductwork " for houses, the A/C and Heating type , They have those big benders , and I will find the shop area and just ask someone in there if they can bend my metal for me !! They usually don't mind , and if they charge its really cheap ! I always offer to pay when I first ask if they can bend it , and they will say "Don't worry about it " I use your Idea also, sometimes !

Well done, sir. Creativity and skill are great traits to have (I imagine!). Just had the thought that if I found that in some yard sale years from now in it's next life, 1. I'd buy it. 2. I'd try to find some of that mat material they use on restaurant kitchen floors that's a kind of dense foam (probably other work areas too where folks stand a long time), and line the shelve bottoms with it. I think the constant clatter would get on my nerves. But that's me. Great project and well demonstrated. You can drill small holes along a line you want to bend in sheet metal, then weld them shut. Ive done it both ways. I usually do the score method on the thicker metals and the hole method on sheet metal. But you can also get abrasive blades for your skill saw and that way you can set your depth of cut to ensure you won't come through.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 роки тому
On thicker steel I will generally pop the angle grinder through in a few spots(especially the ends) and kind of do a combination of score/drill. Skill saw is a great idea. I actually have a metal cutting skill saw that I always forget I own.
@jdog4534
@jdog4534 4 роки тому
@@sixtyfiveford yea. I've actually got a couple carbide skill saw blades that cut plate steel like butter. One is for cutting steel under .125 thick. The other is for .125~.25/.375? I forget how thick is recommended I've only cut up a bunch of 3/16" corten steel, 1/4" diamond plate and a bunch of expanded steel. It was like cutting plywood of the same thickness. The only downside is they're expensive and they can't be sharpened. Forgot to mention, awesome video. I've been collecting all kinds of metal office furniture since the Meltdown. I've got a whole garage full of it. I scored a bunch of desks that are cool because they're modular. I got one wall lined with just modular desk drawers. a bunch of them are the half drawers like tool boxes. I've got two tanker desks identical that I want to stack on top of each other and turn it into a standing workbench. But haven't felt like doing all the body work LOL that's a great idea about putting a drawer inside the drawer. I never thought of that. Great tip on scoring and bending even though I have a break. Very nicely done. you can get some scrap thick plate to bolt to back of it to stop the Tippies. Great idea on the wheels. Subscribing.

If you wanted to dress it up a little bit. You could make a hard wood top and maybe handles for the sides to pull the cart. I would leave the bottom for case tools that take up shelf space. This was a good idea. There are certainly a lot of possibilities.

Hey 65. To continue with the cheap out, try and find some burlap. Some old grain sacks or something. They make excellent drawer liners so you don`t wear off the inside paint with the wrenches. I use 3M spray adhesive to glue them in. Only prob, if you get mice, they tend to go straight for the burlap. They love the stuff. Just sprinkle some peppermint oil on the burlap to help deter them.

Glad that’s finally out and on the table! Red and black peeps, are the true shop colors. No one else has come out and actually said this beside me so kudos brother because I agree it’s true. Puke green, orange or white hahahahaha! Not sure what harbor freight was thinking about but I guess you have to please the masses. Maybe I’ll get the wife a white rolling chest for the kitchen🤪 Nice tip on scoring before bending too. Unless you happen to have a press or feel like making a brake out of angle iron this WILL save you so many headaches when bending. Overall this is yet another great idea rolling out of your shop so thank you for sharing. I’m surprised you didn’t top that with a nice piece of 1” ply and a few poly coats. I’ve done that to all of my rollers except the stackables and it gives a great protective layer to the top. Anyway, some food for thought😉.

I get that part brother, I was just goofing on the current color scheme choices is all. Personally my shop scheme is red n black. Pretty much any restoration I do for tools and such ends up with a new paint scheme of red and black. I just restored a 1950s craftsman wood lathe, I lost the industrial gray and brought it back to life with sunrise red and black speckle. The same with an old school Dayton 14 inch bandsaw I recently picked up on the Facebook marketplace for pennies on the dollar, again that was done strictly in a flat black. It’s all good as far as whatever color one chooses for their personal preference, that’s why we’re individuals😉 but for me the red and black just works. Enjoy the rest of your day ✌🏼🤟🏼🤞🏼

Great tip. Speaking of tips. Looks like tipping might be a problem if the top drawer is loaded too heavy.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 роки тому
They weld steel plates to the back side for counterweight from the factory. But yeah too much weight will still tip it and I may add some more weight at the back.

Some 2 drawer filing cabinets are heavier duty than some toolboxes. They make great stands for mitres,drill presses grinders ect. I’ve found you don’t need “identical” cabinets they’re all interchangeable inside once you pop the front drawer panel off.

I think a 3 draw unit would be about the same height with 5" locking wheels as a harbor freight rolling tool work bench down plywood for the top and bottom use 5" or 6" swivel locking casters add a 12" long bathroom grab bar on one end Make a wood frame. Put 2 same key type locks on both sides do what you did or make wooden draws, wood top maybe thin wood sides and outer frame with a center frame to cover the seam between the 2 boxes all the wood can be screwed on with short panhead or tek selfe tapping screws. Id add a 1/4" bottom to the draws out of wood. You can hand bend the metal using angle iron after you score it with a utility knife the angle works like a brake also buy hvac sheet metal hand brake or make one with plywood. You dont have to score ot with a grinder the edges can fold and rivit it place or short screws no welder needed. Im saying this to give other people ideas. Ill bet you can get these at a habit for humanity restore store cheap if you go when they have them. Offices like to donate used stuff for tax purposes.

Great idea as long as the now middle drawer isn't loaded so much that pulling the top one out doesn't cause it to tip onto you feet.
