When I was watching the new Sonic movie I had to ask myself, "MatPat, why is Sonic on a road trip?" We all know that Sonic's big thing is running. He can move way faster than a car, which makes the choice of making his big theatrical release a road trip movie SUPER weird. Theorist, today I am peeling back the layers of this "plot hole" to figure out if it was a MISTAKE or, perhaps, proof that it really is about the friends you make along the way.

I feel like Sonic just stayed with Donutlord because at heart, he’s a kid. He doesn’t want to be alone. And really, he doesn’t want to leave Earth. So he’s purposefully dragging his feet on leaving and spending as much time as possible trying to stay here. And he stays in the car with him because this is person he feels closest with, even at the beginning of the movie, this is his dad in his mind.

I appreciate how MatPat calculated Sonic’s run to the Pacific Ocean and back, but it looks like there are some mountains there too, so I think he would have to calculate the height of the mountains that Sonic would have run up and back down again as well

I don’t know if I’m the first to notice this but this video was uploaded on February 29th, 2020, if you’re confused, 2020 was a leap year and leap year’s only come every 4 years (next one is next year, 2024), so how does UKposts count this video as 2 years old but February 29th only comes every 4 years? My guess is that Sonic knows he could *maybe* get to San Francisco on his own in a much quicker way, but if he did he could be taking the risk of Eggman or someone else finding him much faster if they read his speed level or something like that So he sticks by Tom’s side with the fake excuse that he doesn’t know where SF is because traveling by car wouldn’t raise awareness With the added bonus that he gets to spend time with his father figure But hey! That’s just a theory, a comment theory!

This is what I believe to be true, though Matpat's theory isn't incorrect in my opinion. I think it comes down to the fact that in this movie, Sonic is much more of a kid and as such might have simply not been confident enough to explore such a distant place on his own. Montana is his home, and he hasn't really left it from what we're shown. So going to some unknown place far away would not only be scary, but he would also have to find a way back home (if we're assuming he's using his rings only in emergencies and doesn't use the rings to get back to Montana). While he probably knows that he's faster than Tom's truck, he sees this as an opportunity to fill the empty place in his heart. He's basically getting the father he never had AND that father is making sure that he gets to San Fran and back safely. Thank you for listening to my insane ramblings.

Ok I just wanna say what I think: 1. Remember, sonic had no idea where San Francisco was. That’s why the road trip. 2. He didn’t run up the wall because he prefers to be a secret.

Sonic 'could' have found his rings on his own but: 1. Everyone tends to think and do irrational things when they are scared. This is probably magnified because Sonic has no one. 2. He wanted to make a friend and took this chance to road trip with Donut Lord to do just that. 3. He wasn't in full control of all of his powers. In fact, he just learned to Time Stop and Spin Attack from the film. 4. This Sonic isn't the seasoned hero from the games, and this is his origin story.

Sonic is able to find his way back to the truck after going to the sea easily, in this case he must be good at navigating or have a good memory so as long as he saw a map he’d be able to make it to San Francisco

He rounded up though, which means he final result would have Sonic going even slower in a calculation where he was already assuming a worst case scenario. So keeping it at 3.9 would've just meant Sonic cleared the world even faster.

You know what, I wonder, why didn't Donut Lord just give sonic his phone with google maps? As long as sonic respected how long the voice takes to speak, he wouldn't need to read the map, he could listen for where to turn. My headcannon why Sonic wanted John to bring him was because he was scared and uncertain. And we know Sonic isnt a thinker. So he bropably didnt think about just going all imperial measuring by simply running. So in his paniced, cornered and scared state he just asked John to bring him there, not realizing he could have done it himself and alone.

So… my question is… 1. Sonic accelerates so fast… how fast does he go and how much energy would his legs have to handle the acceleration? 2. If he went in … 3 speed stages where in stage 1 he just chill zoom 2 kinda zoom zoom and 3 full speed zoom zoom, considering his size if he were to… cover the whole earth instead of following a road how long would it take him to go from pole to pole? 3. If Sonic is his canonical weight, and he goes as fast as he goes, if he slams into an object how much destruction would it cause?
