Here's the follow-up montage video from the BlueTit nest box located in Loughborough, UK. It takes us from the first egg hatching to the chicks fledging and leaving the nest.
There is a 'PG-13' edit of this video showing what happens to the chicks that didn't make it. You can find that here: • 'PG-13' Edit. First Eg...
If you haven't seen the Empty Nest to First Egg video you can find it here:
• From empty nest to fir...
As you'll see, several of the chicks didn't survive to fledging. There was a cold snap during the nesting period which could have had a bearing on the matter. Rest assured that the bird feeders were (and still are) well stocked. Like minded people with bluetit nest boxes in the UK left comments saying many of their chicks also hadn't survived through to fledging this year either.
The chicks hatched over a four day period, usually this would only be a two day affair. The final chick to hatch on day 4 didn't stand much of a chance compared to its siblings which were already much larger after 2 or 3 days of being fed.
The sharper eyed amongst you might have noticed that there isn't a day 15 or 19 in the video. This was due to a recording failure and a computer meltdown. The camera and computer had been streaming 24/7 for two and a half months and started to fight back!
The parents continue to feed the chicks in and around the garden and the chicks have not returned to the nest box. This is absolutely normal.
The white fluff in the nest is Sheep's wool.
If you would like to see more then there are individual daily highlights available! Please look through this playlist -

I had to throw away a reef next to my front door with nest of baby birds on it. My God was it awful, the stench and stains they left behind. I only noticed the nest when I began to smell a appalling stench whenever I would walk into my house. When I check on it, there were 2 baby birds, there was a 3rd one but it was hanging off the nest by it's leg decaying, right next to the other 2. There were also just slimey stains of fecal matter, vomit??, and what ever covering the nest and everything around it. Almost made me puke on the spot. Threw the whole reef away (including those birds) and had to scrub the stains they left behind off my house. Sometimes nature isn't so pretty. In the end of they day, they are just animals running on instincts.

Damn, this bird couple is more responsible and supportive of each other than some human couples.
@tslenkareposts
@tslenkareposts 2 роки тому
Fun fact: birds are monogamous, mate for life, and take equal time to support their children The reason why humans (and other mammals) are different is because, unlike with simple egg laying, the female/afab must carry their child for 9 months of pregnancy, followed by at least a year of breastfeeding. During this time, the mother bonds more with the child than the father/other parent, thus ending up in a tradition where it's expected of the mother to care more for the child than the father

I'm fascinated at how the baby birds, after they get fed, turn around, lift up their hind ends, and begin to defecate. And the mom and dad seem to expect this movement, and are right there to retrieve the waste material from the baby and take it out of the nest. This is truly extraordinary behavior and makes you wonder, "How do they know how to do this? Where did they learn this from?"

Maybe dad brought back the wrong kind of caterpillar... Something seemed wrong with the situation where they were trying to force feed them that one caterpillar, and chicks started disappearing soon after that. Sometimes it could be illness or sanitary issues as well. That nest looks like a breeding ground for all manner of disease, fungus, and parasites. Not to mention, mama bird feeds them with the same mouth she uses to pull poop out of their butts, so if one chick gets a parasite or illness, they are all getting exposed to it.

15:25 for those wondering what that censored box in the bottom right hand corner is, from another video: "I think the last one was too big to lift our of the nest after it died so they moved it to the far corner. You can see a brown censor box appear in the right bottom of the screen at some point. I think the body is behind that". There were 3 and then down to 2. That's wild that they couldn't get the body out. 8:25 16:25 predators a foot, crazy shit. The crow was massive! The starling being smaller was still scary. The instinctual reaction of the babies to thrust their heads up with their mouths open the moment the parents return is fascinating. Also anyone know why they flap their wings a lot like at 17:40? Practicing? I thought it was for better air circulation or getting some exercise XD EDIT: nevermind, didn't realize those are the kids practicing.
