This former flight attendant reveals what it’s like flying for both low-cost and premium airlines in Asia, “I’ve seen a lot of flight attendants spiral, there’s a lot of suicide in the industry."
The only KPI that matters is your appearance, so if you have bad skin or gain weight then you’re suspended to fix those issues before stepping back onto the plane. She’s seen flight attendants resort to drug use and plastic surgery - with a colleague dying on the surgery table from getting liposuction.
She’s dealt with a passenger throwing hot noodle soup at crew members, an intoxicated passenger masturbating naked in his seat, a suspected Mafia member smuggling guns onto the plane to the pressures of entertaining high-level politicians whilst the airline is turning a blind eye.
All those years as a flight attendant have changed the way the Informer perceives society, she says “it’s great when you start, you’re being paid thousands to travel to all these exotic places but I just did not foresee this other side of the industry”.

I applied to be a flight attendant back in the early 2000s. They told me in the interview that maintaining a very small weight is a part of the job description because the flight attendants have to be tiny to fit down the halls. A couple of friends of mine who were flight attendants talked me out of it because they said they were always expected to sleep with the pilots. This was in the US.

My Mom was a flight attendant when she first came from Ethiopia to the US in the early 90's and she told me she had special privileges, and her salary was higher than some of the other attendants, she got picked out with couple of other ladies to attendant to certain guests she was offered free things too outside of the airlines, and was asked to work at a bar with some other attendants but she rejected it since she wanted to be in the right state of mind when working. I told her why you don't become one again then if they paid well? she said, "look at me" Shes gain weight and had kids and said no chance of her getting a job back at American airlines. I remember a flight attendant that pulled down the window blinds for me when I was sleeping. I was a quiet, shy teenager, usually invisible to people, and it melted my heart because it was so nice and I never asked for it. Later when I woke up I got hot buns for a flight breakfast and I loved them so much I remember them all those years later. It breaks my heart to learn how awfully those people are treated. For how nice they have always been to me, I would love to give them all the good things in this world, but they get all the bad things and it's not fair, it's so much not fair.... I applied for the flight attendant position recently and I read the website carefully and checked all the requirements. I seemed to be a very good candidate so I thought I would easily get the job. I passed all the exams and the last thing to do was weight, height measurements. I was underweight so they immediately eliminated me, even though they never wrote on their website specifically about that. I had to travel, buy plane tickets and all that just to get eliminated because of weighing 6 kilos less. I was super sad and I thought I lost a huge opportunity but now I can see that I was actually saved from that madness.

I worked as a flight attendant in Northern Europe and it wasn't like this. Any harassment or misbehaviour of customers, and we would give them a warning and have the guards waiting for them at the arrival gate. No hard beauty standards either, we had all sizes of both women and men. The negative things I witnessed was some unruly customers, gossip and power games by seniors. Then the constant pressure change in the body and short nights really messes up your body. Many were on sleeping pills. And garlic, you can't eat any of that...

She accepted it out of fear because the miscalculation she did could cost a hefty sum. Well, the project manager only ordered some adjustments in procurement team and viola, it was solved. I took a flight recently in business class of an Asian airline. I dont usually get to do so, but my work was paying so I made the most of it. As expected, the meals were served in courses by the flight attendants, with snacks and other amenities provided throughout. I was just being normally polite, and was understanding when my chosen meal option wasnt available (chose a seat at the back of the cabin, so everyone else had their pick before me, and was thus my own fault). After we landed, the purser told me I was the nicest passenger she'd had in a long time and really appreciated my presence on the flight. I couldn't really understand why: I mean, isn't saying "please" and "thank you" just common courtesy? That's literally all I did. Anyway, watching this video showed me that this "common courtesy" is not "common" to everyone. I like to think most people are nice but, I guess, "most people" fly in economy...

@@Livingproof0823 it could be if the eye drops are mixed with alcohol and ingested orally - a chemical reaction quite possibly could occur and one of those symptoms could be drowsiness - perhaps being at a high elevation also causes this mixture of things to cause someone ti get sleepy. Either way this is super irresponsible and illegal on so many levels. I do not think this is any different than normal day to day living - I mean lemon is good in salad dressing but you don't put it in your eyes bc you'd most likely have an adverse reaction. Coconut oil is good for our skin+hair but I don't think my GI track would be happy if I ate it the way I put it on my hair. My shower gel smells yummy but ingesting it would make me sick. Pple drink alcohol but pouring it in your eye and rubbing it on your skin would make it super dry...

A friend of mine was let go from her previous job at a company. Although she was very efficient at her job, the new section manager was trying to push in her former colleagues from previous job. The HR head was also in good terms with her and all it took was just a few oral and written warnings over trivial matters which was practiced by almost every at the office. For example, she took a day's leave because her grandma passed away. She notified the office but failed to inform what she was working on at the moment. She got a written warning for that. The head manager was not interested in her pleas at all. There was no way to contest, no one to report to, no mechanism nothing. My wife was a Flight Attendant for 20 years--heard alot of these stories before--She passed away in early 2022. She had great memories of Piedmont Airlines and US Airways--made many many friends and had many stories--some good and some not so good. Some of wild passengers who she handled well and some that were a real problem--love to tell her stories she told me. she handled people with her smile and kindness---her smile would light up the whole cabin--everyone loved her--even her crew mates. FA are the heros of the sky too not just the pilots. She said the Pilots would certainly abuse their power whenever they could. Said many of them and many of them failed to get what they wanted. She said she would call them out if they tried to use their power on her..Stand up for yourself and others--there is a lot of power in a group--definitely when the unions get involved. One FA that I knew stopped passengers from trying to take all of ice off of the plane with them. He put the ice cubes in his mouth and showed the passengers what he was doing---The passengers were not interested any longer and stopped asking for more ice--if passengers would step in sometimes and help the FAs many problems would go away STAND UP for your favorite airline employees. They are not there to be abused just like in th real world.

I was so disgusted with how we were treated by the passengers that I only lasted three years and had to quit. It was NOT glamorous in any sense and to this day it’s still hard to talk about. If you're a flight attendant, then you should know each company is different. My aunt is a head flight attendant for KLM. KLM isn't as strict on its employees as other airlines. Appearance guidelines are firm, but not unrealistic. Employees are not expected to take blatant abuse (especially if my aunt is on the flight; she will duct tape an unruly passenger to their seat in a heart beat, or threaten to tape their mouth shut if they spit on someone). Other companies are the complete opposite. Many Korean airlines have impossible standards for their employees, and they will be named and shamed for not complying. They're expected to remain servile and docile regardless of what they face. There aren't universal standards or experiences.

The boiling noodles story is from an Air Asia flight from Thailand to China, flight was diverted & the troublemakers fined by a Thai court, they should have been imprisoned. I haven't been on an international flight (save Canada) in at least 20 years due to health limitations but at least here in US?Canada I am thrilled to see middle aged, less than supermodel perfect in appearance and confident flight attendants now! I feel as though their experience will aid in keeping people calm and getting us to the best exits, slide, float on a wing, etc. or prepared for an emergency landing. Only jerks are flying to exploit the attendants, projecting their neuroses and inflated egos on the vulnerable and underpaid. These poor people! This makes me so angry. Kudos to the whistleblower! @@findelka1810 I did a poor job of expressing myself and you caught me! I was trying to say that I am glad to see that (hopefully) these middle aged, professional acting attendants make me feel more confident than someone on some lame charm and cuteness offensive to "ease" any anxiety or state of need for a specific situation I bring with me. All too often the physical attractive in our cultures can progress beyond any inate talent or intelligence they may have. Give me competence and confidence first--no matter what pckage they come in. However, I do think a flight attendant needs to be healthy and not encumbered by too much ballast. Middle aged spread is not what I'm talking about; but Lizzo shouldn't be hired because even in a jumbo jet, the aisles are narrow and at altitude an attendant needs to be on point for a stint of CPR or assisting someone having a grande meal seizure, etc.
