It has changed so much since 1984. We were so convinced that being a state runner up or a one time state champion was a huge place to be. Seeing the way heavyweights wrestle now is light years past how we used to lumber and push each other around hoping for a tilt or a trip up. I am proud of what we did at Bedford HS in Michigan in that year, we had 6 in the state finals, two champions and four runner ups. It was amazing.

I think the rivalry between Burroughs Dake and Taylor really show how important it is to find the right weight class for you. I would not say any one is better than the other. In their prime, I think Burroughs is the best at 74. Dake the best at 79. Taylor the Best at 86.

deeper then that, having all those beasts floating between the 3 weight classes means they all had to be that much better. They all have world, and olympics medals, and from a fan stand points its been great to watch them leave college and compete at freestyle internationally.

Mine was named Jeff Reese. 1995 New York state champion at 132 lbs our senior year. He went on a full scholarship to wrestle for the university of Michigan. He died from cutting too much weight his sophomore year in 1997. That is when the weights changed after his death because his parents lobbied across the country and had meetings with the NCAA. He was the third wrestler to die that year from weight cuts.

Only 6 weight classes in the Olympics so no gaining or losing weight to slip past the real talent.
