Most lighting these days uses LEDs. They're super-low power, provide good light, and last a long time. But you probably still have some fluorescent lights left. If you're like most people, you haven't quite gotten around to replacing them with LED tubes. You really should replace them though since LED tubes use much less power than fluorescent ones. The trouble is, it's complicated. There many types of fluorescent fixtures and rewiring is often required. So, how do you make it as easy as possible? Join me for a detailed yet simple 3-Step Guide to converting your fluorescent light fixtures to LED!

Yeah, the blue light thing... I did an experiment once with 'blue-blocker' glasses. I didn't notice any difference at all. That's just me, tho... I can sit in front of a computer screen until right before bed, and then just zonk out instantly. It IS true that the spectrum of light from most LED bulbs is different, but it's also true that the spectrum is becoming more and more 'friendly' as time goes on. There's no such thing as a 'white' LED, so they have to do sort of like phosphor coating tricks (like in fluo bulbs) to turn the non-white LED light into actual 'white' light. That's been getting better over time. I suppose it depends to a large extent on the bulb, your eyes, and your particular brain!

I've installed 5 Philips single ended LED T8 tubes here in the UK. I much prefer to use series wiring. This means that if the lamp is fitted the 'wrong way' around it will still operate okay. For single-ended use Philips should have provided a label to indicate the importance of connecting the power to the correct end. People replacing fluorescent tubes in the past didn't have to worry!

With a double ended tube it doesn't matter if the tombstones are shunted or non-shunted. I prefer double ended since rewiring is easier and you can place the LED tube ends in either direction and if you accidentally put a fluorescent tube in a fixture rewired for dual ended LED tubes nothing will happen.

So, you used a single ended bulb here but do you think one type is better than another? I am working with old 48” t12 fixtures, tombstones appear non shunted, looks like it is easy enough to shunt all of each side by connecting all wires on one side together and same on other end. Hot to one side,neutral to other. Is there an advantage to buying one type of bulb vs another assuming you have non shunted tombstones. Very nice video.
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 2 роки тому
Not really. It's more a question of the type of fixture and the need to re-wire or not. Otherwise, the single vs double-ended tubes are the same thing internally.

Thanks for the video. It looks like we only have Non-shunted tombstones (4 connections) in the UK. So if i have 4 tubes do i wire say the live on the one end and neutral on the other, as u discribed. 4 connections keep say live to the left and neutral to the right of the tombstones???? Difficult to explain.
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech Рік тому
Not sure I understand, but we have mostly non-shunted tombstones here. So, for every upgrade I did, I removed everything from the fixture, disconnected the wires from one tombstone for each tube, and then for the other tombstone I wired neutral to one pin and live to the other. That means most LED tubes must be inserted with the "active" end on one side the fixture (i.e. the label side of the tube towards the live/neutral tombstone), but it also means simpler wiring since it's more like a normal lightbulb. I'm finding a greater selection of single-ended LED tubes, so that also gives greater flexibility when I need to buy replacement tubes in the future!

"bal-bla-bla, it's very complicated" - then uncomplicate it! Because even the incandescent bulb can be a complex thing to explain (do you hear me, Mr. Boltzmann?). A low-pressure mercury tube, in its classical configuration, with a starter and a ballast, has a 2-step turn-on process. Those 2 steps are controlled by the starter. The reason is that the Mercury (Hg) within the tube cannot be convinced to be excited by the mains voltage (110 or 230V here in the EU) and de-excite as light at the starting conditions within the tube (pressure, temperature, composition). Step1: The starter turn on the heater (filaments). That should vaporize some of the Hg and heat the gas within the tube. Meanwhile, the ballast (basically a big coil) is accumulating energy while acting as a limiter for the current. Step2: The starter is turning off the heater. Because the connection is cut abruptly, the energy stored in the ballast should go somewhere, and it goes to the tube as a high-voltage spike. That spike ignites the discharge within the gas (Argon if I'm not mistaken), which, in turn, initiates the excitation of Hg atoms. And that produces light, mainly in the form of UV light, which is converted to visible light by that white powder that coats the tube. (Replace the glass tube, which is opaque to uv light, with a quartz tube, transparent to uv light, don't add that powder and you have in your hands a germicidal lamp). After that, the ballast acts only as a limiter for the current. It's that big because it's designed to operate at the main frequency (50Hz or 60Hz) That's the classical configuration for the low-pressure Hg discharge tubes. The electronic ballasts operate at higher frequencies and that allows for better efficiency (the classical ballast dump a lot of the energy as heat), much less flicker, instant turn-on and, depending on the actual schematics, a certain degree of dimming capabilities, working with supplies with a bigger voltage range (or even with DC) and even working with broken filaments. Anyway, regarding this video, great job mate! I started the conversion to LED when the first tubes appeared here in Romania so I can appreciate the effort you put into it. Personally, I prefer to remove completely the ballast and the starter, completely rewire the appliance, and, with a permanent marker, write a note inside it if I used single-ended or double-ended tubes. That should make things easier for whoever comes after me to replace the LED tubes.

Everything less is going to be yellow, but 4000k is this nice, clean white that is like a skylight at noon all day. 5000k is like a cold, blue dead planet feel. I don't really even like this type of light in work spaces--It's draining. 6000k is so dang blue, it feels dark, and you cannot appreciate the differences between colors of objects in the room--They all become a desaturated blue.

Your best bet is to remove the 2 ballasts, and then you can wire each bulb for whatever kind of LED bulb you want to use. Yeah, I know - that doesn't help much - but it should be more clear how once the ballasts and all the unneeded wires are removed. Then you can do either single or double-ended LED tubs/bulbs.

It depends on the bulb, but usually the non-connected end pins are just there to hold the bulb and are not connected to anything inside the tube. So, putting the tube in backwards will just mean your light won't turn on.

I have double ended Osram tubes from 2018 (ST8P SubstiTUBE Pure). Fixture holds 2 tubes. I wired L to all pins on 1 side and N to all pins on the other side. When I plug it in lights will not work. I measure 230V between both sides. Tested the tubes in another fixture I didn’t convert yet to make sure they still work and they do. No idea what’s wrong. If each end of the tube is connected to 230V it should work, no? I am tempted to simply connect L and N to each side (without tombstones) to test. Do both pins on each side need to be connected? In my fixture I have 4 ‘connections’ on each side (2 per tube). I measured between each connection on 1 side and connection on the other side and all show 230V AC. Any idea/clue why my LED tubes will not light up? Greetings from Belgium!
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech Рік тому
Are you sure they're double-ended tubes? I looked up that Osram model and couldn't find any info about their 'endedness'... Normally, both pins on each side of the tube are shorted together internally, so if you put Live on one end (even to only 1 pin) and Neutral on the other end, they should work.
@hardware4computer
@hardware4computer Рік тому
There’s no label or marking saying they are single-ended tubes. When using them in an old fixture I just need to replace the starter, which is just a piece of wire. I will do some extra research and maybe contact Osram. Thanks for your input!

On one end (where the text is printed) I saw something that looks like some components on a piece of plastic that sticks to the inside of the tube. Then the LED strip that runs along the tube and nothing more on the other end. So I figured these tubes had to be single-ended. Rewired my fixture so each tombstone on 1 side had L & N and it worked 😎 Osram didn’t bother to label it so you can mount it in any direction with the dummy starter. My kitchen has a circular fluorescent ring, and no visible starter that I can see. It's also quite touchy in that when I flip the switch, 98% of the time, it doesn't come on. At the very least, I have to tap it and at worst, I have to wiggle it around and even wiggle the plastic part that joins the ends of the tube and which contains the connectors where it plugs in. It used to be that I could just hold my hand next to it and it would come on, but now I always have to physically touch it. As a general rule, I have nothing against LED bulbs and have them in all my other lights, however I do dislike the fact that the LEDs in them are all connected in series, so that if a single LED out of 10-15 burns out, none of them work. To me, that seems like a blatant case of planned obsolescence. They could have easily created the bulbs with them wired in parallel, and the bulbs would last MUCH longer.

It depends on the bulb and its particular driver circuitry inside. Having said that, it's worth remembering that even incandescent bulbs flicker at 50 or 60Hz, depending on the AC power where you live. Many LED bulbs flicker at a higher frequency (usually 100 or 120Hz), which should be less bothersome. So, I guess it just depends on how sensitive you are to that kind of thing.

After upgrading the highways around Johannesburg in South Africa, the government has designed to fund the upgrades with electronic tolls. Citizens have cumulative decided not to go along with this.we have not registered for the prepaid device, which was supposed to be in our cars, and we ignored the stacks of bills that were posted to us every month for thousands of Rands and government had to give it up. They could not possibly summance all of us and take us all to court. It would have taken hundreds of years and costed billions. Simply mailing out the monthly bills with almost no one paying, led to them running out of money to even do that. So Citizens were not consulted, did not agree, so we killed etolls. It can be done. Don't participate.

LED lighting is energy-efficient like florescent lighting but the drawback is the quality of the light itself on human health. The light itself varies depending on the bulb, but as a general rule of thumb I've been informed from reliable sources it's damaging to the eyes over time. Apparently, incandescent lighting is closest to natural lighting. Can you give us a more detailed lowdown on the quality of LED lighting and its impact on the health of the earth's life forms?

Yeah, it's rather complicated from what I can tell. Incandescent bulbs are 2700K, which is very much 'red' light - hence the reddish tinge in old-school photography. Sunlight is actually around 5500K. But then if you buy a 5500K LED bulb, it doesn't seem like sunlight. The reason apparently is because the total spectrum of light is very different. I'm also not sure about the blue light thing... I tried wearing blue-blockers and I literally noticed no difference. But I know quite a few people who had a HUGE difference in sleep quality when they reduced their blue light exposure. I'm also not sure about eye damage. For example, does the presence of glasses or contacts reduce or increase that damage? Obviously, we're talking about visible light here and not UV, but... I really don't know!!

I don't know why anyone would WANT LED lights. They are terrible for your eyesight.

Well, aside from the huge power savings, I didn't really want them... But at this point, I have no choice. Older bulbs simply aren't sold anymore. And the ones that ARE available online are uber-cheap and burn out in no time.

@@ScottiesTech They are starting to make incandescents again. Home Depot carries them. I would ALWAYS check the potential health dangers before buying any electrical gadget. Everyone should have an EMF monitor to see how much dirty electricity is being put out by the gadget/fixture into the living environment. I wouldn't be surprised if the more something is hyped up as being "energy efficient or convenient, time saving etc", the worse it is for your health.

@@emilybh6255 Home Depot, really?? Well, over here in France, they are strictly forbidden. That's supposed to be called 'progress', I guess.

@@ScottiesTech Well at least in France they aren't trying to cook everyone with cell tower radiation the way they are here. They are one of the few countries with low maximum amounts of radiation emissions allowed from cell towers of I think it is 10 microwatts per sq millimeter whereas in the UK and the US they allow 500 or half the strength of a microwave oven if I'm not mistaken. I also read that in France they have removed Wi-fi from libraries and put in ethernet instead. Although I suppose nowadays with everyone obediently locking themselves up in their homes, libraries are probably closed. Here is something on the radiation they are exposing us to. www.magdahavas.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/AMERICAN-INDUSTRIAL-HYGIENE-ASSOCIATION-JOURNAL-A-Review-of-International-Microwave-Exposure-Gu.pdf

The cooler temperatures are easier on the eye, when in an enclosure they’re defused more, and last but not least don’t buy them from the “dollar store”
