Can we talk about how dosage creates the poison? Remember when people were freaking out over the contents of cereal? There is an ingredient that is highly toxic but it is used in tiny doses in cereal to give it the fluffy/puffy texture it has. I have a forensics degree and we talk about dosage determining the poison. You can even see this in the hold your pee for a wii contest a long time ago. Somebody drank so much water she got water poisoning in a radio contest for a wii and it killed her, if i remember correctly. The same can be said about any and all substances we eat. Dosage determines the poison. I feel like this would be a strong topic for food theory.

Well, from a biochemistry perspective, it all depends on your definitions of "poison" and "toxic". Too much of anything can be bad for you, sure, but not all substances interact with the human body in the same way when at harmful levels, even if some of the effects can seem similar. The nature of these interactions can determine what one would generally consider a "poison": while consuming too much water may be harmful, that is a result of an imbalance between it and other substances that allows for the unnatural formation and decomposition of certain compounds; meanwhile, certain poisonous compounds may interact directly with substances within the body, rather than simply causing an imbalance that allows harmful compounds to be created. Of course, you usually won't notice if a single cell is compromised, but the point is they are directly involved and aggressive, so even small amounts will have effects. That is commonly what people consider as "poison", since anything can be "toxic", i.e. harmful, in varying quantities.

Well, this is good to know. As an infant, I crawled my way under our Christmas tree and when my mother changed my diaper, she found fir needles in it. I had eaten them. Glad to know I wasn't totally off in doing so.

You can actually get spruce flavoured ice cream where I live. It’s not common, but it is kind of a fun flavour and it's available in the grocery store right next to where I live. I would also like to point out that the inner bark of pine trees at least (I know, not a spruce, but fits the theme) was used to make bread during famines here. It was called "pettuleipä". Some of the flour in the bread was replaced wih the tree bark.

I actually quite love this episode. I would LOVE to see more episodes about indigenous uses of common plants. Oh and thank goodness MatPat moved onto food theories. I watched an episode or two of game/film theories and they were utterly horrifying to my psyche. Never again.

We normally just use the tree for our fireplace, though I’m planning on using this years to make pinewood crafts. Not very good at craving or carpentry, but my dad knows what he’s doing and we agreed he’ll teach me how to use power tools and make stuff out of wood.

Spruce needle tea is a staple amongst outdoorsmen. Best way to flavor your hot water on the trail, i personally just dump the needles into the kettle while i boil the water. Saves time steeping. Here in Finland, we also used to cut our flour with powdered tree bark in times of famine, essentially making spruce bread. You can also technically eat Yew berries, as long as your spit out the seeds. Also also, we traditionally use juniper to flavor our beer.

I worked on a Christmas tree farm and when hungry we would eat some of the buds and tips. It actually isn't that bad and, when eaten enough, it could fill you up quite well.

The barks of various trees are actually a traditional bread additive where I'm from. It was mostly used to replace some amount of the flour in breads, because flour could be quite scarce at times.

The Common Yew is a typical garden tree in Italy, and it's also know as "Albero della Morte" = "Tree of Death". The consumption of its leaves is considered to be not only toxic, but deadly. The external flesh of the female trees "cones" is edible tough.

Funny thing is, we don’t throw our trees out in January. We just put them on the balcony and let the birds use it. When do we throw our trees out you may ask? Well, we threw our last tree away in November of the next year

My family usualy leaves up the tree until february for a okay-ish reason. It's because our house is usualy really dark, there isin't that much light even if the blinds are wide open. So we light up the christmas tree and do what ever we're doing with much more light and we can see much better (also, we have a plastic x-mas tree, so it's reusable and isin't messy) :|

Here in Finland there was few times during the years of 1690, 1860 and the last was 1918 during a civil war, when there was famine, my ancestors had to make "Pettuleipä" which was made from the inner bark of European red pines, you took the "jälsi" and "nila" (vascular cambium and phloem) of the inner bark, bake and boil it, then mince and grind it and added it to some rye flour as a filler. It has actually gained some newfound use as a "healthfood" since it actually has a lot of fiber, flavonoids, iron, manganese and zinc, also lots of B1, B2 and C vitamin.
