The “herding cats” commercial was funny because it took a saying, “like herding cats,” to its literal conclusion. And because anyone who’s spent time around a cat knows the idea is absurd. It wasn’t just weird for the sake of weirdness.

Technically yes. But it would be extremely expensive and hard, and probably not entirely accurate especially in what it’s made of. Not only would it be extremely hard and expense a lot of it would go bad before the rest could be finished. It would also be made but not editable, again expense but plausible. But if you really want to know look into the chocolate river scene from the Willy wonka movie!

In the Netherlands. An insurance company made very popular commercials with the slogan "Even Apeldoorn bellen". They haven't done so in a long time, but now I got one of their ads out of nowwhere with the same formule. Like the picked it up again after 10 years. For a lot of Dutch people on UKposts, it will be nostalgia when they get this new ad.

There are companies that still run their old commercials from the 90's around the winter holidays, and they seem to do real well off the nostalgia of it all. Puffs tissues and Campbell's soup are two examples off the top of my head. M&Ms kinda does it sometimes as well.

"NO ONE EVER PAYS ME IN GUM." Except when me and my sister quote it we say Trident Layers instead of gum, so the marketing worked. That said I have never purchased that gum in my life because Mentos Gum not only tastes better but has one of the first ridiculous commercials I remember ever seeing right next to the Yahoo commercial with the big afro guy and MAKE 7 UP YOURS.

But it turns out that's a quote from an add for a product that didn't last very long. Almost didn't click on this because of the Little Lad in the thumbnail. I was a sophomore in high school when those ads came out. My AP English teacher was obsessed with it. We had his class first thing in the morning and he would make us watch the commercials DAILY. Even when the Little Lad put out a video teaching you how to do the Little Lad Dance. We saw every version of the Berries and Cream Starburst commercials. I have not let that man live it down. Over the years, every high schooler (or their parents) I've run across that had his class I've told them to ask him about the Little Lad. To the point that he knows where I work, who I know, and who to avoid. You tortured us for 6 months, Mr. Stoner. As revenge, I will make sure the Little Lad dances at your funeral.

Good point about AdBlockbeing a thing... I don't really see anything resembling a commercial anymore. I pay youtube to not show me ads, I actively avoid sites where ads can't be blocked, I avoid traditional social media, and I don't watch television... so it mostly amounts to podcast ads that make their way to me.

You mentioned that the increase in total commercial exposure drives advertisers to be more creative, but there's also the fact (as you mentioned at the end) that more people _skip_ ads, avoid them, or don't watch them. Ad companies are already attempting to jump in the meme market. So far, none of it seems to work because it is inorganic. Most people in general are tired of ads anyway, so making it a meme won't send sales skyrocketing.

To me, the adds that made the best impression on me are the ones that do something artistically appealing and coherent. I believe it was Big Bowl XL (the last one the Bus played) that had some really memorable commercials. I remember a Coke one where a Rube Goldberg machine used a quarter to start up a robot who drank the coke. Then there was a (I believe) Burger King add that had people dressed as the individual parts of the burger in a stage performance and they assembled themselves into the burger. They were odd, but pleasant. You could tell there was thought, effort, and talent behind them. Nowadays we just get a bizarre thing that happens that tries to scar the products into our minds, which makes us suppress those memories and the products they're trying to sell.

As an older gen Z who is preparing to get my own place eventually, I have phased out watching tv almost entirely. There are only a few shows I watch and I definitely won’t be getting cable when I do move out. So all the adds I see are on the internet. I definitely prefer the adds like Tacobell’s where they put effort into them and make a production out of it.

If you think about it, ads are going full circle thanks to UKposts. They're a bit flashier now, but back in the 1950s the shows were sponsored by a particular company (now it depends on the episode) and there would be ad breaks where Superman would try to sell you Frosted Flakes or Fred and Barney would sell cigarettes. Right now shows like this will take time out of the conversation to promote a sponsor, sometimes even in character if they use a character. Everything old is new again, as the Hello Fresh sponsor ad in this very video highlights.

I think smell is an integral part of what we call taste in ordinary language, like if someone loses there sense of smell (hopefully temporarily) they will complain that food tastes different or even has lost flavour. The only way that taste only means what your taste buds on your tongue detect is if we are being technical and trying to define exact sensory pathways, rather than experience. Note visual presentation probably changes our taste experience, I would not be surprised if skittles deliver a different experience depending on whether you are tasting them while looking at them versus wearing a blindfold etc.
