@normanpearson875310 днів тому
They all put us to shame , Dutch ,Germans , Scandis.....not so much Latin based languages . Tell us why , experts , please .
@emdiar65889 днів тому
The Netherlands holds the record for having the most English speakers per capita of any country that does not have English as the standard language. I've lived there for 33 years (English expat) and I can't remember ever meeting a Dutch person who doesn't speak it. I speak fluent Dutch, but many expats don't even bother learning it. In fact, it can be hard to learn Dutch because as soon as they hear a foreign accent, they automatically switch to English. ps. Hup AZ Alkmaar, hup!!
@emdiar65889 днів тому
@@normanpearson8753 I'll give it a go. Not saying I'm an "expert" but I did study languages and I'm a bit of a polyglot. Western popular culture, both in music and film, is predominantly in English. This is the direct result of the British Empire running the world for a couple of centuries, and especially being the founding source for American culture. Europeans are surrounded by English and hear it every day on TV, radio and cinema. In the UK, turn on the TV and you only ever hear English, so you don't become familiar with the sound of any other language. English is a Germanic language has more in common with languages spoken in Protestant Northern European countries. Also, UK culture is much more Germanic than it is Mediterranean. I'm English but live in the Netherlands and speak Dutch every day. In the Netherlands they have always broadcast British children's TV shows with Dutch subtitles. In Germany, they have the same shows, but dubbed into German. This is why Dutch kids learn English much quicker than German kids. The farther south you go in Europe, the less likely you are to come across English in your day-to-day life. The Romance languages (the actual name for "Latin based" languages) and people, are resistant to Anglicisation in a way that their Northern neighbours are not. The Dutch love putting English words in a sentence, whereas in France, they actually legislate AGAINST the use of English in the news, if there is an equivalent French word already. That hasn't stopped French people from looking forward to "Le weekend", and young French people hardly ever use "la fin de semaine" when planning a Friday night out. Oddly, in French speaking Canada, they do still prefer la fin de semaine, but that is probably because they are fighting to keep French alive in a country in which they are the minority. Hope that helped.

There are also 3 more amateur clubs in The Hague with big history. Professional footbal was outlawed by the KNVB (FA) until 1954. The Netherlands might sometimes look pretty similar to England, we have a huge tradition and history of associations and clubs run by volunteers just for fun or the general bettering of things, including sports clubs. "Paid footbal" as would be the direct translation was long seen as corrupting the beautiful game (in hindsight, were they wrong?) and players who went to play in Italy or Spain for money have been suspended by the KNVB for the national team. It was actually a charity game organized by Dutch professionals playing in other countries to raise money for the victims of the North Sea Flood of 1935 that triggered the change. People recognized that the level of the pro's was much higher and to keep up internationally it had to change. Clubs were already paying players secretely and even doing transfers though. Great video, seems like a really lovely club and I didn't know the story at all. So just an addition because you seemed to assume that still being amateurs was an open matter to market forces and entreprise, it wasn't at all.

Thanks for the video and so nice to see football history. I checked the internet: oldest football pitch in the world is at Sandygate (1860!, Hallam FC in Sheffield). Wow. Some of the first clubs in The Netherlands: HFC 1879 rugby, football since 1883 (Haarlem), Hercules 1882 cricket, football since 1889 (Utrecht), HVV 1883 (The Hague), Concordia 1885 (Delft), Go Ahead 1886 (Wageningen) fused with Victoria (1889) to become Victoria in1903, Sparta 1888 (Rotterdam), and Vitesse 1892 (Arnhem). I played for Hercules (amateur) as a child and loved the history of the club. My kid recently played against HVV and I pointed out the buildings and history to him. So nice to see how they try to maintain their history.

The club is named after a children's charity and was in the 5th division of Portuguese footy in 2007 returning to the first division in 2022 some 80 years since their last appearance in it. Crazy story, also current Sporting and potential Liverpool coach Ruben Amorim has a connection and short tenure with that club, technically.

There‘s FC Nuremberg. They‘ve relegated just 1 season after winning the league in the 60s. They‘ve since been the only ones ever being able to bottle a league win so hard. In 2007 they did the same thing again, and relegated after winning the german DFB cup. They still have the 2nd most league wins in Germany, and currently face the 5th consecutive season in league 2, while being on the lower end of the table. As I‘m a fan myself I just pray that we don‘t fall down like many other old successors did. I wanna be able to watch games even when I‘m 80.

The Hague had a lot of great football clubs in the "only amateur" era. And some of these clubs were more for the upper echalon in the community and they considered it inferior to be paid to play football. So when Professional football was introduced in 1953, they opted to stay amateur clubs, 3 of these clubs in The Hague are HVV, HBS and Quick. Still very well known clubs in The Hague.

We can see this a lot in English football. Not on this scale of course, all league winners since 1888 in England are in the top 2 divisions however when you look at the FA Cup we have Bury who had their golden period in the Edwardian period, The Wanderers who have 6 FA Cup titles the same as Newcastle more than Everton.
