A powerful film showing the true plight of victims forced into marriage. With unprecedented access to the Manchester Police Force, this documentary investigates the biggest cases of forced marriage in the UK. In June 2014 it became illegal for someone to force a person to get married, the problem is how difficult this is to police to track and investigate these cases.

lol I laughed at your comment. Just to clarify as someone experienced by dispatch: Police is already underway. They type more info for later investigation and try to keep the caller on the phone in case things happens. In the end the called had already dispatched - the second such call comes in so does the address. That is why the police never are dispatched AFTER the call - they are on their way lol but your comment was funny

Arranged/forced marriage should be classified as human trafficking. What's the difference between a pimp or trafficker selling a human being in exchange for money or property?
@zagrizena
@zagrizena Місяць тому
Arranged marriage, however unusual in our culture, is not immoral in itself. As long as both parties participate voluntarily, are given a chance to "meet their match" and potentially refuse the union, it's not illegal. Problems start, when marriages are arranged without consent, through duplicity or sheer force. And especially, when young people are forced to travel abroad to get married there under a different law, which might severely limit their rights within the marriage and their options to leave.

I think the worst part for me is the mother's role in all of this. They've been through the same fear, beatings, lack of freedom, and forced impregnation from being married off, so how could they force their daughters to go through that? Kudos to the lady at 41:50 I'm glad she decided to protect her children
@MrAveragedancer
@MrAveragedancer 5 років тому
RiyaMMX: I think the mothers being in the same situation themselves makes it pretty hard for them to do much. They've been enslaved most of their lives and don't have experience with being able to choose where their lives go. How can they help their daughters with something they know nothing about?
@skylandersgiants5504

The thing is, is that it’s not that easy, it’s not a child’s job to punish their parents, teach them that what they’re doing is wrong, in law and especially religious law that it’s extremely wrong, culture likes to twist things to its advantage so these people have been raised to think it’s okay when it isn’t. The kids don’t want their parents put behind bars or whatever bc they’ll have nobody if they do, they sacrifice a lot and they don’t want to make it worse

I agree, I'm American and love my country but our law enforcement always seems to go straight to intimidation, aggression and force. Yes, it's definitely required in some instances. I do feel they need better sensitivity training in dealing with citizens. However, I have watched plenty of videos where the police in the UK handled suspects rough and disrespectful. It doesn't really make sense to compare street cops handling gang violence, drug crimes etc. and officers investigating complicated domestic situations. It's pretty much oranges to apples.

I am a male victim of this crime but us males are not highlighted. My life was ruined; I was 17 in 1994 when they pretended to take me on a holiday to Pakistan; once there they took away my passport and said to me "you ain't returning until you marry this thing and get her pregnant" . I was in a remote village without money or means of contact. The police ignored me there. I was used as a bridge by my parents and dad's sister to help her daughter to climb in the UK over my happiness. Can you put someone else's happiness over your sons happiness. If I could, I would love for her British citizenship to be revoked and see her returned to Pakistan and banned from coming to the UK. I hate her with passion. The funny things is this documentary totally ignored that it happens to young men. Probably not as much, but it does happen. I am a successful and happy man but this haunts me at times and humiliates me to my core.

I had a friend who had an arranged marriage since he was 4 and she was 3. He said that growing up being told this will be your wife was weird. Every time they would meat and hang out, they both felt like they had to get along because they had to spend all there lives together. They never really liked each other, but they didn't hate each other. To them that was enough. When he left home the marriage was called off. He never dated any other girl, he said it'd feel like he was cheating. So he was kind of lost when it came to dating, he hadn't even thought of it before.

I worked in a prison. We had a very sad situation. A young man, just over 21 came into the jail for murdering his sister. She had refused marriage. He was the youngest son. He had be coerced by the family to kill her. He was the youngest, most expendable member of the family. He was just as much a victim as his sister. He just said as we put him in the cell. "It is the way it is." It was so sad that he had been sacrificed too for some spurious idea of honour.

The British turned the reins over to India in 1947 , yet after 70 years of self rule , India still remains an Imoverished drveloping Nation. Look at Germany and Japan . Am talking about at 7:10. The female questioning him states "okay" several times as if she is agreeing that it's okay to hit sons and wives. There is a very weak attempt to tell someone else to tell him this is not okay, but it is not picked up on Closed Captions and is very much glossed over. Fully believing in your religion, living your whole life believing in your customs, believing in your family, but still being brave enough to try and get away. All at a very young age. I applaud these girls, and the officer's dedication to helping them. It's not like a normal cop job, arresting drunks or normal stuff like that. They have to truly connect with the victims and see through the family ties and subtle intricacies of culture and secrets, so they can help these girls. I don't know how anyone can care more about customs than their own children, and view them as objects to do with as you please including hurt them. It's heartbreaking. As someone with a lot of Muslim friends, there were many girls I knew that would tell me about how their parents would threaten them with forced marriages if they didn't do well in school or were hanging out with boys. My friend Nasima was really quiet and secluded. She was part of my circle of friends and wore the most religious clothing out of my Muslim friends. She attended my high school for three years before she just disappeared. None of my friends knew where she wentand she never spoke about her home life so I never expected this to happen. I still wonder today whether she was forced into marriage or if she just moved. These documentaries about forced marriages have really made me reflect on what happened back then and I'm only seeing now just how radically different western and eastern cultures are. I hope the girls in the documentary stay safe and I hope the same for Nasima.

SDD41 there are many bride killings, a lot of rape culture and disregard for females in Hindi culture. I know, having had Hindi friends and working companions. One young woman was badly mistreated by her in-laws and husband and had to flee from them without letting us know. I was her boss. She left me a message and I totally understood. Later, she contacted me and I was so glad to see she had a happy and much better life. Right here in the US. And 2 boys who worked for me had arranged marriages. I doubt they worked well, as they grew up watching their dad physically and emotionally abuse their mom. Both mom and dad worked for us, and I wish I could have beat him senseless. This reminds me of when I was in highschool. There was a girl in my science class that was from the middle east. She migrated with her family years beforehand. We had a new male student who had only been in the states for about three months. One day he stood up in the middle of class and pointed at the girl yelling at her in his native language. We were all wind eyed and confused. Then he threw a rolled up paper at her and yelled "COVER YOURSELF! YOU SHAME!" My teacher briskly walked over to him and smacked him with her teaching binder. Yelling back at him "You're not at home! She can have her hair like that if she wants. Sit down and shut up before I make you!" Apparently she spoke the language. No one whows what child they get or the world would be a perfect place and i know the world isnt perfect dut to wars and natural disater that comes out way. So when it comes to blaming on what kind of child they have it not really a good idea. If you want blam then blame it on the nature of life. I am a girl but i could have been a boy, no one know how they were born beside out of the spern and ovum put together to make a human being. Just like you or the victum or the parents. I'm of an Afghan background and I've heard stories like this one too many times. I don't understand why as parents you would move half way across the world for a better life for you and your family... but retain your backward mindset and what's worse, drill backward beliefs such as forced marriage into your children's heads too. I understand why this shit goes on back home in Pakistan for example. You're surrounded by your family, you live in the same unit and are physically bound by your culture. It doesn't make it anymore okay but it makes it easier to comprehend. However the whole point of coming to the UK is to move forward, give your children, the future generation, a chance at education and success. It's beyond me why you would pull them back into the god damn dark ages and chain them there? It's appalling, cruel and what's worse is that these people, they think that what they're doing makes them better Muslims. It shouldn't come as a surprise that forced marriage is sinful in Islam and in actual fact, is illegitimate. Any sexual activity that occurs during the 'marriage' is seen as fornication. So instead of strengthening your faith lol you've actually bought yourself a ticket to hell. Rightly so.

Good for her, having that weight off your shoulders and not having to walk on eggshells anymore... Having your first taste of real freedom is indescribable.

I was married to a man who've I had a 5 min conversation with and that was it. Meeting him, engagement, and wedding all in 3 weeks. My father called it "an arranged marriage" But my father had to pick and approve. I was a teenager, very abusive for 11 years.

No, it's more prevelant in the USA, with all the Mormons and religions built to marry cousins. Britain just has a massive South Asian population. It doesn't take Charles Darwin to work out that this is a South Asian issue.

It's all come from the woman campaigning I saw her nearly 20 years ago and she was raising awareness, I think she also wrote a book about her own experience. Appalling that a man's and other family members' sense of honour is totally dependent on their daughters' and sisters' submission to their wills, so they can be raped by strangers. And that that "honour" is above all natural protection of these girls and young women; better to threaten, abuse and even murder their children rather than let them be free to decide for themselves and "shame" the family. There is nothing honourable whatsoever in this mindset. This is evil abuse. Sick.
