It's funny how these days, the studios use a _lack_ of VFX to promote new movies. Even though they're always lying through their teeth when they claim "everything was done 100% practically". Well, I can't blame them. As the internet has shown, there's a lot of "CGI BAD! PRACTICAL GOOD!" people out there, who are just ripe to be fleeced.

@@fireaza VFX doesnt equal CGI, the vast majority of VFX *were* practical in the 90s, along with compositing, mattes, matte paintings, etc. CGI was also promoted for a while, as it was new / could do things that weren't realistic to achieve without it.

Having Dan swing his stumps just in front of the legs of a coffee table was a great example of bumping the lamp - though, ironically, it was rather the opposite.

Compositing and roto used to be a drag back then, you had to trace everything exactly and if you messed up, you could really see it... Some shots would literally take weeks.

Speaking as a person born in 1980 who saw both in theaters, I can say that while Jurassic Park's effects were cooler (there is no T-Rex in Forrest Gump), the effects in Forrest Gump have always been more impressive to me. One of the reasons that I have always preferred full animated things, to that which are made of a mix of live action and animation, is that when everything on screen is fake, it looks more real than when half of it is real. That is how I say it anyways. In a little more depth I would say that upon starting something that is 100% animated, you are already committed to a certain level of suspension of disbelief for the purposes of entertainment. Making it so that you are less critical of any one element. Than you are when starting a movie or show that is a mix of live action with realistic CGI animation where you are supposed to believe that it is all just stuff shot on camera. The things that really get away with a mix of live action and animation like Who Framed Roger Rabbit or even Monkeybone, are a different breed. addendum: The kit they used to insert Hanks into old footage was used for even better purposes in the Trials and Tribble-ations episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. To insert DS9 people into classic episodes of the original series. :D caveat: I have always been a giant fan of all forms of animation, so things like the CGI of Jurassic Park or the awesome merging with historical footage like with Forrest Gump, have always been of great interest to me. A part of my brain is always looking at that side of a movie, even as another part is simply loving the experience.

I'd also like to mention Death Becomes Her which was also done by Zemeckis and used ground-breaking VFX.

Because a lot of the things he mentions being cgi are small. Most of the explanations are composite shots of practical shots. Those super hero movies will just cgi whole bodies.

A friend of mine did the roto work on a bunch of these shots. She also did the Gallimimus stampede in Jurassic Park, among others...

There are very few cgi shots in forest gump. They are mostly VFX enhancements, rather than creating something using a computer, it's already there...and it just needs some polish. Green lantern is more cgi than VFX. Visual effects are different than computer generated imagery. Do your research.

That's because, unlike many later films from the 2000s such as the Star Wars prequel trilogy, they knew that CGI was fairly limited, and best used to only do what was otherwise impossible or impractical. Something that should be maintained in today's films too.

I remember watching the film and wondering if Gary Sinise really DID have a missing leg, and then they just added one in for the early shots. He wasn't well known as an actor, so I had no reference. That's how good the missing limb FX was to me.

It's not great compared to modern standards but it's not terrible either and that's probably because the movie is very, very good.

It was a combination of that and some very clever compositing to add in objects (like a table) that would get hit by his legs if he had them.

I remember seeing the behind the scenes of the shot where Lt. Dan swings off the side of the boat and into the water. There was a gap in the railing and his calves were wrapped in green cloth.

Pretty much. You can actually do something like this yourself with any camera you have kicking around, even your phone, and some video editing software. The trick is, you make sure the camera is "locked off" - cannot move, anywhere, not even a tiny bit - on a tripod or similar mount, and take some shots of the scene with no-one in it. This is your "plate". Now when you move into shot, you can make yourself appear and disappear by dissolving between the two clips - the background remains the same so it just looks like it's you that's fading in and out! Now, if you wrap green or blue cloth around your legs, you can use a chroma keyer to punch that out, or punch a "Death Becomes Her" hole right through your body with a green circle on your shirt...

@@coldsamon I remember that in some Spanish magazine they said that John Goodman had offered to have a finger surgically removed from each hand to film The Flintstones if they couldn't do that with CGI.
