Tiafoe and several US players are somewhat overrated because they usually can ramp up more points during the long US hard court season, with home court advantage.

What a performance by Macháč. Finally Czech men´s tennis has some talents, not only women´s. Fingers crossed also for Lehečka and Menšík. Hurkacz is a favourite of this match, no doubts, but I think Menšík could give him some hard time.

Slowly but surely Tiafoe is getting back to where he truly belongs which is Top 30. His forehand and serve are good but that’s all no variety. He was lucky to be in Top 10 with only 3 singles titles. On the other hand, Machac’s game was so entertaining. I fell in love with his stunning backhand.

Great match from the Czech mate. Tiafoe had several break chances or even break advantage but finally succumbed to a better version of himself, it really felt like chess sometimes, with Tiafoe not playing aggressive enough (barely went to the net) while Machac would counter exceptionally, deep ground strokes and superb passing shots.

@@KingCast65 It's basically going back to the tennis I grew up in during the 90s (until "Fedalovic" tilted it strongly in one direction): guys on top still on top, but also having to 'absorb' many more losses than Fedalovic ever did (notably: Sampras, Agassi, Kafelnikov, Kuerten never had anything approaching the dominance that Federer/Nadal/Djokovic have done).

@@KingCast65 He is just not normal. If Alcaraz does not at least reach the semis, Nole most probably will keep the pole position until his 37th birthday, the beginning of RG. Without even playing. Alcaraz would have to win 5 of the 7 tournaments leading up to RG while Nole could enjoy relaxing on a beach, playing soccer with his kids. Or even better: if Nole wins AO, Alcaraz has to win all of these 7 tournaments. No matter the outcome, Nole is just ridiculous :D

@notsohandytim5090 Tomas has had the talent to make a good push into the Top 50 for some time now: saw him lose in a squeaker of a 5-set match against Botic van de Zandschulp at the 2022 US Open, and he gave BVDZ all he could handle, and then some (Botic had to really, REALLY raise his game to win -- at some points, Botic was even resorting to desperation plays just to stay alive in that match).

Machac played amazingly. When I saw the score before the highlights I thought Tiafoe just folded, but the Czech played exceptionally. I think people are sensationalizing Frances “bad” handshake. He’s always pretty gracious in defeat and he dapped up Machac and gave him a light tap on the side as well. Feel like he’s been overhated in recent years. Hoping he can bounce back and show stronger results at Masters and majors this year.

on a point by point basis, tiafoe can hit with the best of them. He knows tactics. But he has no mind for strategy. Every point feels like he's winging it and relying on intuition. He needs to up his tennis IQ to match his groundstrokes if he ever hopes to win a big one

My BIGGEST complaint about Tiafoe. All the skillset and athleticism but a serious lack of critical thinking in the rallies. I often see him making head-scratching decisions during rallies.

THE OPPONENT OF NOLE ON ROUND ONE (CROATIA) AND THIS PLAYER, MACHAC (CHEC REPUBLIC) ARE EVEN MORE DANGEROUS THEN RAFA AND CARLITOS AT THIS YOUNG AGE. I'd root for Tomáš in this match, and I'm happy he won, yet see nothing particularly wrong with FT's handshake. Just disappointment and a wish to disappear quickly away from the spotlight, and into the dressing room. That's understandable, even though some other players on the tour appear to be able to accept even such surprise defeats with greater professional dignity. Still, it wasn't particularly hostile or disrespectful in my opinion. Haven't seen it live so not sure whether he made up for it later, but from this video it seems, that because they shook hands away from the net, overjoyed and relieved Tomáš forgot to shake the ref's hand.

the depth of tennis today for men and women is phenomenal. Tennis is the second most popular sport in the world after soccer and there are more international tournaments and training programs, college programs expanded, DEI efforts, way beyond the Slams

But on the grade school, HS and college level it can be helpful and also for opportunities for coaches so students see themselves in these roles, and looking at the slowly increasing numbers of players of races, incomes and cultures who have not had resources or the opportunity for tennis before, I'm just thinking some of that is going on - I'm hoping anyway. @@prometheus5700

Frances was way off it and it was not even close. Tiafoe hit his forehand shallow, his passing shots into the middle third of the court and his 2nd serve was a puffer. Straight sets to a guy just barely in the Top 75 is not a good look but cause for concern. That being said, Machac held his nerve and took a top 20 player to the woodshed. Well done.

Machac played a great match against Novak last year. I forgot in which tournament.

C’mon AusTV.. this is the third video in a row I’ve seen spoiled by the thumbnail. Put BOTH players on it. Not all of us can watch the matches live so we are relying on the highlights. Last time I watch highlights from you lot until this is fixed.
